trying to to upgrade firmware.....possibly the most complicated firmware upgrade of any piece of electronics that I own...

Read the support forum and it appears USB to USB may cause errors. Tried to figure out flasher but not hte most intuitive. I think I need to download usb drivers but there are two different ones. How do I know which chipset I have?

Michael,
If you could provide a walk thru on the firmwares update it would be appreciated. I spent the last 30 minutes trying to figure it out. (And I have owned the Apex and RKE and was able to easily update their firmware).

Thanks.

Mike

I would really like to know why the updates are such a sensitive issue on this device...
I tried a USB to USB update, everything worked great - I followed the update procedure 1:1 pressing certain buttons first, confirming etc. etc. (BTW: I am not illiterate).
Well the update started going, so I thought: "hey, wow, easy". Suddenly the PPIII hung on the update screen. I waited for another 30 minutes, unplugged, powered down, tried this unplug, plug in, press the button thing from the forum etc. etc. No go.
Then I thought ok, time for a RS232 update. The problem well, no laptop I've seen the last couple of years has got a RS232 port. Sooooo I decided to order one of these adapters. Now that was easy, I read about another 30 minutes on the aquariumcomputer.com forum, wow, I didn't know there are so many different kinds of chipsets. So I ordered one recommended by some guy going through the same dilemma I was. Package came, I downloaded the recommended drivers, installed this flash program. Hmmm, no connection could be made. Damn...
Sooooo options? Well I sent it to GHL in Germany. Sure they were friendly, fast, especially the friendly woman at the reception, she contacted me straight away, tried to help, was patient, friendly. Really cool! Not really something I expect these days, 'cause one does tend to be treated like a turd...
So anyway GHL updated my device for free, but I had to pay for postage back to me. Altogether now, the update cost me 30 Euros postage fees... That is a hell of a lot of money, considering the fact, that I blew a lot of cash on this device...

Mike there is a thread in the downloads section of the support forum.

if anyone has upload issues please post them there for direct support.

For ProfiLux 3 only - for Plus II please refer to the back of the manual fo a step by step guide

This must be done over RS232 or RS232-USB converter

1. download http://www.aquariumcomputer.com/Download/Flash-FR.zip
2. save it somewhere you will find it, no installation required
3. start "flash.exe"
4. select "MB91F467D" as controller, 4MHz, navigate to the firmware file (click "open")
5. check the interface (under "set environment")
6. disconnect ProfiLux 3 from power (it is not necessary to open the enclosure and to set a jumper like it was ProfiLux II!)
7. now click "full operation" - ProfiLux still has no power!
8. plug in the DC-connector - ProfiLux has now power again and the download should start

Hint: If the update with ProfiLuxControl failed then there is maybe something wrong with your connection from PC to ProfiLux 3. Please ensure that your connection is stable and reliable before attempting to update with ProfiLuxControl or this tool, e.g. check the USB driver and update it if possible.

do we have to load a usb driver first or can we just load the flash tool on the pc, hook up pc to profilux via USB and then follow your directions?

That was not the right usb/serial I got it and it does not connect. Maybe I can find more parts to make it work who knows.. This is a PITA though and the new software/firmware did nothing to help my connectivity

so to be fair to GHL ProfiLux you are using an adapter that GHL do not make and it does not work but its GHL's fault ;)

Maybe read this ;)

So the next part of the "how to guide" is to cover initial connectivity via USB and or USB to RS232 adapter.

So first off -

Always install first the matching and newest driver before you connect the USB with the PC! I will explain how to do this below

If you use the PLM-USB card you will find our newest driver at our download-page

http://www.aquariumcomputer.com/Syst.../download.html

Important: there are 2 different drivers available - one for Prolific chipset, the other for FTDI chipset.

If you are not sure which chipset (the name is printed on the chip of the USB-card) you can install both drivers, this is not a problem.

Third party adapters (RS232 to USB) - The only time you should use one of these is for firmware updates using the fujitsu tool. I do advise everyone with a Plus II to get PLM-USB as adapters are our biggest nightmare. The biggest issues faced is by the use of these adapters so i will cover as many hints as possible regarding this. Of course ProfiLux will always get the blame when it does not work even though they did not make it ;) So this is very important for everyone to read :)

If you do decide to use a third-party USB-RS232-converter then you have to use the shipped driver, always look for an updated driver on the manufacturers website. If the adapter does not come with a driver or a brand name, my advise is do not buy it, but if you do have one like this and can not find the driver, use the driver for PLM-USB, however we do not guarrantee this will work

So you have installed the driver(s), if you now connect the profilux to the PC with power applied windows should say "new hardware found" and after a few seconds display what COM port it is using. if not then the USB-port will be displayed in the windows device manager under "Ports (COM and LPT)". There you can also see the assigned port number (e.g. "COM 7").

In ProfiLuxControl this port number has to be adjusted under connection settings. Connection settings can be located by clicking on the 3 dots ... next to the connect button.

open the connection window for RS232/USB and this box will be displayed

Picture1.png

The baudrate (transmission speed) of ProfiLux and ProfiLuxControl must be matching. Standard is 9600 for both, usually you need not to change them.

In the COM window edit this to match the COM number that you noted earlier.

Make sure RS232/USB is ticked

Press save

in the list of connection tick the connection for RS232/USB

Exit

You should now be able to connect

Notes - Even if you are using a USB-RS232-converter you must use our cable ProfiLux-SER between converter and ProfiLux!

If the connection fails although then:

The used USB-RS232-converter is not working correctly (hardware and/or driver are not according to the standards). In this case try using the profiLic driver I personally have found this to work in my case, also use this driver if you adapter was not supplied with a driver CD.

I hope this gives a good insight

so to be fair to GHL ProfiLux you are using an adapter that GHL do not make and it does not work but its GHL's fault ;)

Umm NOPE all GLH software/firmware you name it. The USB/Serial converter was not the right one. So it was never even tried. I have downloaded both drivers and no difference I lose connection. 3 month old PC running all the latest software so no freaking clue. After its on for awhile and I check connectivity its moving very very very slow and then freezes??????????????????
