how do you drill glass

Well a 55g has a tempered safty glass on the bottom so it can't be drilled... unless you take it to a professional glass shop... they may be able to do it, but it will be very expensive. IMO not woth the cash.

yes its possible even with a tempered bottom.

you dont need to drill the bottom of the tank to install a internal overflow box. Come in through the back for your bulkhead

drilling glass is easy. Get a diamond holesaw and a stream of constant water(or make a well of water arund the hole with epoxy) and let the drill do the work

If I am not mistaken, all panes on the 55's from Wal-Mart are tempered.
You may be correct. Becoming hard to find a 55g that's not tempered on all five sides. I speak from experience.:(

J.P. , If you need a glass hole saw, I have a 60mm one up for grabs. PM me.

take two polarized filters and check to see it it is tempered before you start. Everyone insisted my Oceanic 180 bottom was tempered, but it wasn't.

If it is a modern tank from wally world. It is tempered on all panels, so it can not be drilled. Find somebody to trade you for an older tank so you can drill the end or back panel. There is still a good chance that the bottom is tempered even on an older 55 gallon tank.

Glass-holes
I used their stuff to drill my 180 this past weekend....worked well.
Just follow the video and you should be fine. I highly recommend their suggestion of a drill with a clutch on the lowest possible setting. It'll keep you from pushing too hard.
It's not really "difficult" but the first hole can be a little nerve rattling.... get a practice tank or some sheets of glass to practice. Its a feel thing....

Ya, if I didn't have clutch on my cordless, I would have for sure broken the glass. The bit always snags just as you're pushing through the other side.

If your bit is catching as you are going through, you are putting to much pressure on the bit. Make sure you cut back on the pressure when you get close to the breaking through or you can cause chips in the glass.

uncleant.

I really hate to tell you this, but you are not correct. The new 55's that are sold in many places now have tempered glass panes for all pieces of glass. The last 2 55 gallon aquariums that I have seen that came from Wal-Mart, have had tempered glass on all sides, and have been told that all aquariums sold at wal-mart have all tempered glass for safety.

I would still check each aquarium with polarized lenses. I've read threads about new tanks with stickers that say 'tempered glass' but they definitely weren't. A lot of guys have drilled them with success because they checked the glass, not the sticker.
