How long will it take for a male GSM to turn female?

My female in my mated pair died a month or so ago. The male is just 2 inches, so I was hoping to buy another female for him, but is it too late?

When do they usually make the switch?

It will begin to change very quickly. How long has it been on its own? Your best bet may be to get a juvenile.

Yep - I agree with EC - your best bet is to get a very small juvenile.

He's been on his own somewhere between 1 and 2 months. I have the opportunity to get a female that is 3.5 inches. The one I have now is 2 inches. Do you still say get a juvenile?

Definitely! Especially when dealing with GSM's. You do not want to put two females in the same tank. I very seriously doubt your fish is still a male.
