How many tangs would you say i can get away with in a 180.... where their will not be any fights to the death over territory... the tank is 6x2x2 with lots of hiding spots. my LFS store told me i should be fine with a blue hippo, powder brown, tomini, kole and a yellow tang. but as always i want to run it by here first because they are like car salesmen

I kept a hippo, yellow, cole and power blue in a 180 without incident. When I tried to add two more yellows things went bad, fast.

That should be enough space for those I have a powder blue, yellow, purple blue hippo and a kole in a 220 no issues

Are you just going to do one of each?

ya just one of each

ya i was only going to stick with the one yellow. i hear they can be pretty nasty

They are all different as far as species, get them all at the same size(small) and the same time and add them together and turn the light off for 24hrs and you will be fine

U are right
No matter what trick u do or size u place...
If u don't place them at the same time one will die

good thing i have a 55 gallon QT tank. if i cant buy them all at the same time can i use egg crate in the QT and separate them as i buy them? and then add them all to the DT the same time?

You don't need to add them all at the same time, though it would be ideal to do so. It can be hard to cycle so many tangs through quarantine at the same time, so doing it in batches is probably a good idea. Start with the smallest/least aggressive in the first group and then the others in the second. Acclimation boxes and lights out are good methods when introducing new fish. I have added several same/different species tangs both together and separately over my years in this hobby and I have never had tangs kill each other. Big points for me are 1. Try to introduce new fish in groups 2. Feed well (reduces aggression) 3. Plan out the stock list and order of introduction.

I kept a sohol, purple, and a Desjardini in a 8x2x2 for a couple years and they fought like cats and dogs, the sohol obviously being the most aggressive of these 3. The purple and sohol were put in at the same time and the Desjardini was added a year or 2 later.

So looking at your list the Tomini being in the surgeonfish family may be the most aggressive,

I did get to see some pretty awesome high speed circling of each other and it never appeared they would actually kill each other but they were all larger healthy fish the sohal a good 10+ inches.

Right now I have a 10 inch Mata tang (Acanthurus mata) and a big yellow tang in a 6x2x2 and they never bother each other I however attempted to add another yellow and that was not possible the other yellow was going to surely kill the new one being much smaller

I think the powder brown & yellow will be the aggressors. Tomini is a wimp. But I'd pick either kole or tomini. Not both. Blue hippo thumbs up.

I had a tomini and a yellow together for a couple years. That was no problem.. But I wouldnt add any yellow tangs into a tank anymore.

well i guess theres really one way to find out. Ill add them all as my list fish in the tank and watch them closely. if they start fighting pretty bad the bully gets the boot

Do keep in mind there will be some sparring at first until they establish a clear hierarchy. The kole and tomini might not get along at first but in a 180 it will be fine. My yellow tang was a scrappy little fish until I added 4 more yellows, now he's happily faded into the mix. Honestly, the most aggressive tang I ever owned was a large blue hippo. Be prepared for when yours grows up...

i know about the sparring for the first few days but if it gets bad bad then out the bully fish will go
