How much are you dosing?

I'm fairly new to dosing. I've had my apex DOS set up for about a month now. I'd like my Alk to be at 8.5dkh but it keeps dropping. I'm at 120ml of 2 part per day for a mixed reef; seems a bit much to me as mostly lps at the moment and all sps are frags with exception of a monti colony. Tank is between 8-8.2 ph.

Dosing in the sump at return camber with small powerhead. I do not see any calcium deposits/precipitation anywhere. It's on a 24 hour schedule..dosing Alk at the top of every hour for 30 min. And calcium 5 minutes later for 20min.

~85 total gallons of water volume
Parameters as of tonight before dosing up.

Alk-7.7 (dosed up 1oz for .5dkh increase)
Ca -410
Mg -1460

My Alk was measured at 8.0dkh last night.

Ideal parameters
Alk 8.5-9
Ca 425
Mg -1400

Should I keep increasing my dosage until I get to where I want to be and until it's stable? Or should I take the doser off line for a week and recalculate?

I have only a 40 gallon with a fair amount of montipora frags with a monticap of about 4 inches and a few other LPS and dose 40 mls of alkalinity but then again dose 150 mls of kalkwasser which maintains my alk. At 8.6 . Calcium at 470, mag anywhere from 1440 to 1500.

Sound very high for that size tank. I have mixed reef, a decent amount of SPS and dose 40ml of bionic.

That's about 100 ml per day, if I understand what you're saying in post 6, which is a moderate dose for that much water volume, assuming you're dosing the recipe 1 DIY 2-part or a similar commercial product. 120 ml is still reasonable. Since you don't see any precipitation, I wouldn't worry and would keep dosing.

How much water volume is your system? I think it's a bit much too. But if bertoni thinks it's reasonable for my water volume, I'll keep doing what I'm doing and hope I can get it to stabilize. If it gets worse. I'll take my doser offline and recalculate.

Knowing about the ml you are dosing is fine but it needs
- total watervolume of your Tank
- knowledge about the ingredients and concentrations of your stock solutions
to puzzle out how many "pure" Ca, Alk and Mg you are dosing

This value would be "comparable" with other tanks consumption.

I'm actually working on a new function which does exactly this to ease understanding of 2part dosing ..... next version will have this

I have 120gallon water volume but am using bionic.

Okay, I was using incorrect numbers, but that's about 1.8-1.9 dKH per day, which is on the high end, but many tanks consume that much or more.

I'm dosing BRS 2-part

Yea I had a feeling it's more on the height end but given that I don't have much coralline algae and only a moderately stocked system. I think I should reset and recalculate. Thanks everyone for your responses

Hmm tested today and I'm at 8.2dkh. Which is what I dosed up to from 7.7 last night. So my tank may just be consuming that much Alk. I will keep testing cover the course of the next few days to confirm

0.5 dKH per day isn't all that much at all. In my experience, coralline algae and soft corals can go through 2-3 dKH per day for years on end.

Is it better to dose both Alk and ca every hour for 24hrs or alternate every other hour between the 2?

Are you dosing them both at the same time? This might be your problem, you need to dose them at least 10-15 minutes apart.

No, Alk is set to dose at the top of the hour for a few minutes and ca is set to dose at the second half of the hour for a few minutes

In some dosing setups, keeping the two supplements separated in time is important. For others, it's not. I dosed 2-3 dKH and the equivalent amount of calcium one right after the other over a period of a few seconds for years without problems. Other setups will have a lot of precipitation without more separation. I wouldn't make any general claims about what's required.
