How to make Swiss Cheese - Krunchy's 275g Closed Loop monster!

After a long discussion with a friend (Thanks again Jon), i've made some modifications to the sump/fuge design. The fuge teeth are now on the correct end. :) The sump baffles are a bit wider to allow for more flow as well as heater placement. I've also added 3 4" holes to allow for filter socks if I ever need them. I normally don't run them but I can definitely see where they'd come in handy if I have to get something out of the tank water in a hurry or just need a place to pile some extra carbon bags, etc.

On with the show... here's the second sump prototype.

Looks like design #2 is a winner! Any thoughts on who is going to build it for you?

Not yet. If you have any recommendations on a good acrylic builder (preferably in town) then let me know.

Now I have to find a home for my old sump, although the dimensions and baffle design would make for a great frag tank! Maybe i'll advertise it as such. :)

Looks great man!

Regarding filter socks, I NEVER used to use them, only occasionally as you mentioned. Well a need arose to run them a while back, and I was amazed how much crap they really pull out... needless to say I run them 24/7 now, changed out every 2 days. I don't run them while out of town.

With that said they are my biggest pet-peeve about my system, as they relate to laundry, which is my biggest pet-peeve in life :D

Thanks. How about a great deal on a sump for that snazzy new tank of yours?

Oh sure, they definitely pull a lot out. Although sometimes I wonder if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Then again, I generally over feed my tank (thus the need for a bigger skimmer) so maybe a filter sock might not be a bad thing once in a while.

+1 - Laundry sucks. :(

Doug Lehman is your man! He does really nice acrylic work and he's local. His RC username is: Douglas LEHMAN

I was actually going to give him a call for a quote. I bought one of his old tanks that has one of his custom sumps and skimmers on it. Definitely well made stuff.

Okay, last one. This is the design i'm going with. I shrunk down the first chamber in the sump because the extra volume wasn't really serving a purpose. This also creates a lip where the water is forced down through the holes where the filter socks/carbon could be. I'm planning on having that piece made removable so that I can take it out for cleaning/maintenance.

This new design gives me significantly more room in the pump chamber while still keeping my oversized skimmer chamber. Let's just say that it's a chamber fit for a king. ;) This also gives me a little more of a comfort zone in case the ATO messes up as well as plenty of room for my PM Substrate reactors. (Thanks again to Jon for the design assistance.)

the fuge side the water comes in on the side with the hole correct? Where water flows out= bad idea, possibility of bubbles in the return area. Also how tall is you stand doors, make sure you can get the skimmer in and out.

The front and sides of the stand come completely off and the stand is 35" tall. Accounting for the 3.5" of frame up top and 21" of sump height, I get 9.5 inches of clearance to get the skimmer out. :( Close but no cigar if the skimmer is 11.02" x 17.72" (BK 250 Deluxe). Dropping the sump area down to 18" tall would give me 12.5", which should do the trick for most any skimmer in this league.

I also get the award for forgetting to think about removing the skimmer before I drew the sump.

Thanks man.

Doug Lehman will build it for you and does a great job. He lives in Des Plaines (screen name: Douglas Lehman). Not to mention you get to check out his 10 or so tanks while you're having it built. I had him build both of my sumps...I have a similar sump/fuge design and really like it.

Here's a link to the page in my build with pics of the sump: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1271003&perpage=25&pagenumber=7

I will give him a call. I'm still playing around with the designs and such. I'm having a hard time making up my mind on how I want the sump/fuge to work. :(

I actually bought one of those tanks of his. ;) His old Oceanic 125 is sitting in my garage, waiting to be set up.

I stopped in at ShoTank to pick up my other PM SR45P the other day... looks like things are going well on staining the stand and the sidecar is built. Here's a little sneak peak of what's coming. ;)

Perfect... can I have it all back now?

Absolutely! Although it did appreciate in value just a bit... :D

j/k, looks awesome man!

Thanks man. Getting close now. I can't wait to bring this thing back to life!

I mostly just need an excuse to throw a Krunchy Kegger. :lmao:

That sump design looks real nice man. I cant wait to see how it comes out. Im thinking of doing an acrylic one for my new tank but I just cant decide

They're definitely nice to have. My biggest concern with a glass tank for a sump is cracking one! I've had a few friends that have used them as sumps and ended up kicking their plumbing or something silly like that and cracking the glass. Then you get to dig all of that out of there and start over. :(

I think it also depends on your situation. I had a 20 under my 46g BF tank and it was great. Held my Euro Reef RS80 in there with no problems. Then again, I never really had to do much in that sump and the plumbing was all hoses and such so no bulkheads to crack the tank!
