How you got in the hobby.(photography)

Wow. When you said 1.2 mp, I imagined cellphone like quality. Those are a lot better than I expected. Thanks for sharing.

Well I started when I was about 15 years ago on my parents Nikon N100 I think it was. It was on family vacations and since they liked my composition, I was always nominated to do all the photos. Try finding a picture of me in my family's photo album! After that I always had an interest in photography but never was seruious. Had a few point and shoot digitals. Once I started a reef tank though, I got into photography more andgot a Fuji S5000. Since then I've upgraded cameras and lens a few time (waste of money, wish I went for the good stuff right away.) But during that time, I also lost interest in tank pictures. Instead I do a lot of nature, landscape, nature macro, and abstract photography.

Stuff like this: (sorry for the badly compressed photos. Just loaded them to RC.)

I have always enjoyed shooting and had various P&S cameras over the years (film versions). Bought a Minolta 35mm Maxxim which I never moved from the auto setting. I didn't have anyone to teach me so I never took the time to learn much about the camera.

Then about 2 years ago I met a neighbor who is an amateur photographer. He was shooting with a Canon 10d and suggested I look for a used one since he could teach me to use it. Found one on ebay and still shoot with it today. I still have a lot to learn but my photos turn out ok.

I just bought my first L lense and should receive it next week. I can't wait to try it out.

Greats shots. What's the first one of? I'm glad I took everyone's advice and went with an SLR right away rather than getting a p&s and upgrading later. Thanks for sharing.

I know how you feel. I just got a new lens lees than a week ago and can't put my camera down.

The hobby grew on me over time. It started with a 1.2mp Sony CyberShot probably around 8 years ago. From there I got a Panasonic Lumix FZ20 right as I graduated high school about 4 years ago. That camera really gave me the itch, and I decided in the summer of 2006 to go ahead and purchase a Canon Rebel XT. Then shortly after I bought a Canon 70-200 F4/L lens to get more into outdoor shooting. Then I got a Canon 300mm F4/L along with a 1.4x extender to get further into the telephoto range. My most recent purchase was about 10 months ago, and it was a Canon IP6600 printer.

My camera goes with me almost everywhere now, and has given me much enjoyment both in taking pictures of stuff in my aquarium, as well as people and places. I've also been fortunate enough to be the photographer at a wedding this past march, and will be taking pictures on the field at a baseball game this coming thursday.

I think that brings us up to date on me :).

I started in 1998 when I was running a race car (Super Modifieds, asphalt short track) Web site. I did all the Web work, and had a nearly impossible time getting photos submitted. I'm sure you can understand, a race car Web site without photos is worthless. So... I borrowed my mom's Canon F1, full manual everything, and started shooting. It took me three races (and about 15 rolls of film) before I had anything that was even remotely useful.

In time, I got a Canon Elan7e. What an amazing difference autofocus made! I picked up a long zoom and a few accessories. When I started my reef tank (Summer 2004), I was using a Sony P&S digital to take tank shots. In the summer of 2005, I was headed to Hawaii, so I knew it was time to take the plunge, and finally broke down and went digital with the Canon 20D I still use today. I knew the sheer costs of film development would pay for half of that camera alone.

I've only shot two rolls of film since buying the 20D, and only as comparison. I was very anti-digital, and completely agree with the comment above about how film just has more life. Digital is a little sterile, but the simple Total-Cost-Of-Ownership is simply untouchable. I couldn't even imagine trying to take some of the aquarium photos I've taken with film! Nearly 10K shots later, there's nothing like trial and error with instant feedback.

:) I can't even remember when I started now as its been so long ago and I was so young! Started out with various P&S film cameras of my parents probably before I was even 10 years old (I can distinctly remember a couple of the types of cameras that took the one use per bulb flash, about 10 bulbs I think to a flash cartridge) - typical kids pictures of course. Probably around the age 10-11-12 or so my parents finally decided I was old enough to be trusted with their "big camera", an old Minolta X-370 film SLR with a 50mm f/1.7 lens and a 100-300mm f/5.6 lens. Shot with that off and on through the years - nothing ever real serious, was just something to play with once and a while. Then a few years ago, just few months after Canon released its Canon A80 I convinced the parents it would be nice to have a decent digital camera. Mom had an el-cheapo digital camera before that but it never was worth a darn for taking pictures. Sometime after getting that A80 the bug really bit me - and I started getting better and better, I wasn't any longer just taking snapshots. Then eventually people noticed how good I was getting and started wanting to HIRE me to take pictures. So after that I decided I really needed to step up to some better equipment so I really could take these clients up on their offers and deliver a good product. Latter part of last year I finally got my first DSLR - a Canon XTi, opted to instead of getting the kit lens with it bought it body only and got the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens with it. Used that set-up for a few months while I saved up some more money for better lenses, and now slowly but surely I'm building up my kit. Just bought my first L lens a few weeks ago and have many more planned for the future.

Currently I'm building my skills up, trying to take my photography to the next level, getting horribly picky and critical with myself :D, building up some name recognition, and hoping eventually to take this from what is now just a hobby and passion to a living.

What did you decide to go with? And also, I feel the same way about me being the most critical with my photos.

:D Got the 70-200 f/4.0 non-IS, I was really shooting for the IS version or the 2.8 non-IS but had to get realistic with myself - right now I can do a heck of a lot with the $500 price difference. Plus I could really use it for a birthday party I have to shoot in a few weeks and a trip (hopefully) in a few months.

Overall I'm very impressed with it! I can see myself getting the 2.8 IS version some point down the line, taken a bit of getting used to compared to my other lenses but now having used to for a couple weeks really starting to find its sweet spots. :D

Seems like you guys have been shooting for quite a while. Wanna share some pics?

:D You can click my red house to see my galleries, or visit the lounge which is where I post most of my pictures!

Beautiful pupper and thank you! They're my shadows, I don't go anywhere without them. They even get to work cows in the off chance so I can call them "real working cow dogs" even though most of their work most days consists of finding stuff to roll in and vacating the area we happen to be working in of all small animals! :D

I am sort of in the midst of putting together a photography website for myself, but always find myself getting distracted by something else, so I have no idea when it will get finished. But here are a few images I had laying around. The first one is fish related :).

Any comments/critiques are very welcome. I'm always willing to learn how to get better.

Started with my first camera at around 15 with a cheap camera that my dad picked up for me. It was expensive for film so I stopped shooting after that, especially after getting a bunch of blurry shots of fish.

Fast forward to college w/my reef tank and my roommate, who owned a Sony Mavica at the time. I can't remember how many megapixel(s) it was. Looking back at it, it was rather dated, using floppy discs, which held about 20 shots. After that, you had to dump the images or insert a new floppy. It was time consuming, but that camera actually had decent AF and some of the shots didn't come out bad at all (way better than anything that I was able to produce before then).

My next encounter wasn't until a few years back with the introduction of the Nikon D70. I sat on the fence for a few months until it fell below the $1k mark (after rebates) and snagged it up afterwards. I burned through 25k actuations the first year and attended every group outing that I could make. I also went through lens acquisition syndrome and picked up everything that I could afford.

During that first year, I shot my first wedding and some other paid jobs which paid off the camera. As I picked up more event photography work and shot more, I was slowly growing out of my D70. Luckily Nikon introduced a Nikon D200 somewhere along the line and I had my sights locked on it. I quickly sold off the D70 to fund part of the D200 (actually sold the D70 to the couple who I shot the first wedding for :) ) and picked one up from their second batch (first batch had some issues). The D200 was a vast improvement over the D70, but I needed a second camera for backup and started looking around.

Three months after acquiring the D200, I met a Nikon pro that was retiring and was parting with his gear. Amongst the list of items was a gently used D2X with around 11k actuations and he made me a deal that I couldn't refuse at the time. I've been shooting steadily since then with the D2X and the D200 as my backup.

Along the lines, I've had the pleasure of shooting with other cameras since my bro shoots with Canon gear. He owns both the 20D and a 1DMIIN (great camera) so I dabbled with some of his equipment.

dinoman, I know what you mean. If my dog wasn't so wild he would go everywhere with me. lol

Amazing shots bwest! What do you shoot with? My favorite pictures are the second and third ones. What are they?

My dad was an avid photographer way back when.

I guess I kinda fell into it. I did some photos for school projects in college - with a simple point and shoot. My instructors said I had a good eye.

I probably forgot about it for awhile (fifteen years later or so) and bought my first slr - still have it Canon Elan 2E. I then progressed onto a Canon 1V, but just could not make the big jump to digital. I did dabble a little bit in dslr with a Canon D30 and sold it off since I was not convinced that it could trounce my pro slr.

Just recently, I finally sold off the 1V to help finance my 30D and now I've go to relearn everything as well.
