not any different than high end zoas imo.. I'll pay a little extra (I paid 50 for a black clown), but I wouldn't buy a $150 clownfish, it's not worth it to me. I also wouldn't pay over a few dollars per polyp for any zoas (I think $20pp is stupid).. let the folks with more money than sense bring the price down, get them when the price drops..
btw, have you seen the new longfin clown that ************ posted? not exactly pretty, but it's definitely interesting..
I don't get designer clownfish. Some variants go fo $100. $200 plus. Where the normal clownfish is $12 at my local lfs. Sure I get it's a little different than the normal one but at 10 to 20 times the price.

What I guess is that many will buy these fish and breed them driving down the prices. So the $200 fish today will likely be $30 in two years.
Sure there cool looking but worth the money? Help me understand.
A lot of "get rich quick" hobbyists think they can buy two expensive clowns, get them to reproduce, and make $$$. But it is never as easy as it looks.... trust me.
Raising clowns is just the opposite of SEO. You can't just set up shop and expect results. It takes a long time to breed clowns that are of high quality -- meaning with minimal defects. By the time you have clown babies that are high quality the rarity of the particular clown may be less, meaning more are available and the price is much lower.
Buying expensive or rare fish and high-end corals makes you feel better about yourself and is a status symbol among other reefers. You get to brag to all of your friends about how much you spent and all non-reefers stare at you in awe because you spent that kind of money on a tiny fish. Kinda like the guy who buys a $70k car and brags about it on a fish forum.
'Duh.

70K on a car is like $50.00 clown fish.
I got a friend who just got a used Mercedes Convertable for 180,000.00 He told me a new one is about 250,000.00
I am not into cars so I did not even pay attention to model so I don't know. I am sure there are cars out there that are even more expensive.

a lfs had a pair of clowns for $1500. a few weeks ago i saw a website selling some clowns for $3500+ :eek1::eek1::eek1:
"bragging" and "making a point" are two different things....just because you're jealous, doesn't give you the right to slam others.
Why don't you try to get out there in life and make something of yourself, instead of talking **** over an internet forum? That way you too can afford nicer things in life....instead of sitting under your troll bridge stamping your feet very loudly.
Just making a suggestion here...
Price aside, I'm usually the first person to admit how much I dislike designer clowns, but those gold nugget maroon clowns on LADD right now are pretty darn cool! I suspect I like them because the pattern is actually symmetrical, unlike the paint splatter look of so many designer clowns.
Agreed! That one is pretty nice! I'm guessing it would ultimately sport the same 'tude as any Maroon clown once it got bigger. It would be funny to see that cutey attacking my hand!! :lmao:
