I got a fever! bowhunter support group needed!

Looks like a good one a Steve. I'm waiting one more week until I go back out. Not all does are bred during first rut and go out of estrous after 24-36 hrs. When they go back in about a month later, supposedly, only he big boys have the stamina to go after them. If you can get on a food source, close to bedding, and put out some estrous scent it is a good recipie.

But for me, no have never had any success late. But I have hunted late season and still seen deer. Just not a monster. Fingers crossed for the coming days ahead. This weekend might end up being pretty good with the cold weather.

Anyone get anything with shotgun?

Ok,Im going to give it a go this weekend as well,Mark.Going to try scent dragging some estrous with 1 or 2 hung wicks during the day.Appears from the time cap images hes nocturnal or seems to be,every pic ive been able to capture ranges between 11:00pm-5:00am.
As far as bedding areas with food sources close by,Ive got a real good idea where he's bedding and the route he takes. Its just going to be a challenge for me to draw him out during the day.
No real hunting pressure here ,other than myself but,a 1/4 mile down the road has got some gun slingers shooting whatever comes by.

Good stuff folks!

I prefer archery over gun season for sure. I DO however enjoy opening day of gun...that's typically pretty productive on our property...TYPICALLY lol. We have about 4 or 5 fam members that hunt the 20ish acres with about 100 acres around it that we COULD shoot on if we wanted but we usually dont. No one has got a deer yet this season...I'm pretty surprised.

After opening weekend I really don't rely on the rut anymore to get the bucks and moving. Things in our area are hardly doing anything "normal" anymore and attempting to pattern them at this point would be futile lol.

Unfortunately we sit in our stands and wait for all the yahoos on other lots who are pushing to send them cross-lots to our quiet honey hole lol.

Steve, if you haven't already, try rattling, grunting and snort-wheezing...you might get some nice action.

When I want to rattle, I grab my calls, antlers and gun and climb dwn from my stand. I start with a few grunts and then follow up with snort-wheeze and then begin my rattling set. I am always sure to thrash the leaves about as well to really try to sound true to life.

I've probably rattled a dozen bucks in over the last 15yrs and it's almost as much fun as calling turkeys in lol.

Good luck everyone!!!

I learned a neat trick that actually worked twice for me. I tied some antlers onto a cord an lowered it to the ground. Then Yank the cord up and down to get them to crackle and rustle leaves below you. Makes the fight sound like its on the ground instead of a tree. Doesn't help with the grunting from the ground, but worked none the less. Grunting worked by far the best for me but I'm sure the Buck scent worked early and estrous later around 11/12 11/13.

Thanks for the tip Justin.Honestly,no, I've never tried rattling or even wheez /snort grunting. Not really sure I know how to do it.My only technique is very basic ,I drag a scent wick in figure 8's ,hang a few wicks with estrous.Get in my stand wait a half hr then bleat call once and doe call once.About all I ve ever tried.Ill check out some youtube on rattling when I get a chance ,something I liked to learn more about regardless.

Ive definately learned more this year than I ever have in the past.Ive owned this house /property for 12 years now and only this year did I really get a chance to get out ,be observant and learn something about the area.As far as shotgun goes ,I cant use a shotgun here its to small of an area. For the most part its just more convient to walk out my back door with bow in hand and be in my stand 300ft away.

Gl -everyone

Dropped a 4 with a gnarly rack. Looks like it should've been bigger but some deformity. One shot black powder. Didn't move a foot from where he stood!

Been 4 years since I took a deer. Feels good even though he's not a beast.

Good for you Chris, glad you got one.Yeah, thats definately a non-typical ,was he an older deer?He looks huge in that first pic.

He had a good sized body and big ole neck on him. Not really sure age. I haven't gotten one in 4 years and only two before then. So not an expert on age. My brother thought maybe a year and half to two years old. All I know is I need a new freezer.

A "W" is a "W" Chris! Meat in the freezer is the name of the game. Congrats again! What was he doing when you got him? Any rut behavior still going on out there? By my guess, starting like tomorrow through mid week next week might be the mini rut. Haven't been out since night before shotgun started but I'm heading out one or two more times next week before calling it a wrap.

I'd guess a year and a half too, but am not great a guessing. The younger ones taste a little better anyways. Congrats on your deer. I'm only hunting a few more days. I've never been skunked in 10 years of hunting, so I hope this isn't the first year.

He was walking through a trail in a thicket by himself. Could smell the odors he was putting off. Definitely smelled like he was ready for the rut. Was thinking of calling this the last day of the year for me, but the wife surprised me with a new shotgun in my trunk when I was packing up this morning. Gonna have to go out and break it in. Still got a couple doe tags and owe thhe landowners for hunting rights. A lannister always pays his debts

This thread needs a bump!

Anyone see the guy who shot the typical 12 pointer in Cato, NY that scored a 178 n change, in the paper? 110 yds with a Rem 1187. Absolute monster!

I have an 1187. I bought it a month ago. If you like shotguns and you don't own one of these, you really need to shoot one. It's very stable, feels great and even with the deer slayer bbl, it has very little recoil. I LOVE THIS GUN. I have the premier with the engraving on both sides of the receiver and the gold trigger. It's pretty sweet. Hopefully I will bag deer #3 tomorrow. Haven't been able to get out much because of business (getting equipment ready for plowing etc.etc...).

I've got my eye on the bolt action savage 220 with rifle like groups out to 125. Put it where it counts and 12 guage or 20 guage, it wont matter. If you bow hunt, taking a stroll after the shot is all part of the deal. Love that gun!

You have any experience with them ryan? I know you do custom shottys. Right?

I pretty much stick to mossberg 500's for the customs. Basically my own version of the persuader. I've never used the 220 but I wouldn't mind trying one out. They look pretty sweet. I've been so busy buying up AK's (I'm up to 7 with roughly 8k rounds stored) that I haven't gotten into anything other than this 1187.

It got a nice write up in field and stream this month in a comparrison to a similar Browning that was $699 more. Justin will tell you over been salivating over it for at least 6 months now. Not a gun guy, but I love that one!

7 AKs? 8k rounds? You know something we should know brother???
