I have a question. How much in percentage is your coral livestock captive bred???

I was wondering of the numbers or a sampling of the reefers out there?

What percentage of their reef tank coral polyps, LPS and SPS and clams are captive bred as compared to wild caught specimen?

So far as I know my present stock of all of my corals are captive bred except for 1 out of 160 coral/polyps. (Was at 162, but a rock fell over that I didn't notice in 1 of my 4 tanks.)

I'm at about 99.93% of my various coral/polyp livestock are all captive bred.

I read something recently where some "experts" were claiming a much greater impact upon the reefs by us as hobbyist as a whole with corals in particular.

Hence my inquiry as to how many have more or less captive bred corals/polyps.

Could at least 100 folks give a reply in precentage please?

BTW, Not doing this for shameless thread hit count.

I really am wondering so I can address a letter to these "experts" with something more than just my opinion or my guess.

I am almost positve all of my coral is captive bread, except maybe 1 Branching Hammer I have. So that 1 of about 28 corals,so about 96%-97% I think. I had a wild Stylophora colony a long time ago. But it only lasted 6-9 months.

Everything living in my tank is captive bred, with the exception of an emerald green crab and the ~5lbs of liverock he came in on.

I would say out of my 40-50 coral species. I only have 1 wild collected piece. I would MUCH rather buy aquacultured corals for various reasons.

off topic.. but Out of my 10 fish, 6 are wild caught.. 1 purple tang and 5 chromis..
If Captive bred fish were available for those particular species I would of definitely spent extra money to buy captive bred.. but that isn't the case at this point.. hopefully one day

The majority of my coral is 3rd generation or greater, (probably 75%) sourced locally from club members etc or online from Atlantis or similar the rest is either aquacultured or maricultured coral... so if they fit in your definition I'm near 100% excluding fish and a few acans I don't know the exact lineage of...

If your coral was grown by someone else before you got it and not another wild caught specimen then it counts as a captive bred coral/polyp.

Every coral (42 total) in my tank came as a frag from someone else. None are wild collected.

I only have 2 wild pieces (both "lps") and they have been with me for over 14 years. All other Acropora, Montipora, Pocillopora, etc. are relatively new, but entirely captive raised locally.

I have a small brain and a small plate that are wild caught. Besides that, just hermits and snails. All other corals, fish, and clams were grown before me and many I have fragged further.

All my SPS (grown from 1/4" - 1" frags) are purchased from follow reefers 1-2 years ago. So, mine's are 100% captive bred.

All my SPS and Rock are 100% Captive grown Second and Third generation as I have grown colony's out and started new one with frags. And I will continue to do this as long as I am In the hobby. I also sell to friends when I have to frag due to over growth. When you have been In the hobby for almost 30 years you get to know what your doing and are not a burden on the Reefs. JMHO
