DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!!

Day Four on my third rearing attempt. I just dropped in some bb this morning with at least a 30 head count. Sived the bottom of the tank last night so I turned off air and heater. Some how turned on air and not heater. Temp in 10 gal rearing dropped 11 degrees in 24hrs. temp at 75 f now and I got on survivor left. if it pulls through he will from this point on be known as the highlander...the immortal fish fry.

UPSIDE: Peciula pair just laid another batch. we'll give it another go around.

Just looking for some support to keep on, feelin' to stupid to continue and need to vent..thanks for listening.

Sympathy. Try putting colored rubber bands around wires and taped labels and other id marks to avoid confusion. I live in dread of pulling the wrong one.

Thanks....Considered/saw a set up with lightted toggle switches for pumps, sumps, and heater/coolers. looks like I might give that a shot.

Always good to foolproof, cause fools are so ingenious. I am chronically absent minded, so I try to design stuff so the stupid things I do won't matter.

Once I lost large numbers of larvae 2 nights in a row. I couldn't understand why until I figured out that I had plugged the heater into the light timer. So I can say, I been there and done that!

You have my sympathy. Oh well, there is always next week.

Cheers,
Kathy

Thanks Kathy,

Any other good horror stories out there. I guess it fitting withe Halloween around the corner. I guess these things are chalked up to experience, but with all the seemingly infinite knowledgeable and helpful people in these forms, it's humbling to see that not everybody is perfect. Thanks all

I don't know if that makes any cents :) or dollars

UPDATE: temp at 79 f 4 hrs after the fact and Highlander is still alive and kicking :)

May last year, beginning of the summer heat wave. I went to work, wife took the kids to some function for the day, AC didn't come on. I got home 12 hrs later to find my water temp at 98 and the ambient temp in the basement a couple of degrees higher. I lost EVERYTHING under half an inch over the next three days (approx. 8,000 fry) and all but my A. frenatus (figures) stopped laying for 4-8 months. I'm finally just getting fish into stores now.
I need to figure out a way that I automatically get paged when a temperature issue strikes again.

Ya, it sucked, 'cause it also managed to stink up my house for the better part of a week.

A good tip is to use two smaller heaters instead of one. this way if one malfunctions it's impact isn't as great, high or low.

sorry for the losses :<

You can get auto dialers to call you when power goes out. Fancier models have more functions (high/ low heat, etc) They are pricey. It's definately on my "want" list. Check the AES catalog for info but I'm sure there is a better price somewhere.

Calfo suggested an electrical plug box with lights indicating power on. Then aim a webcam at it so you can check from any computer anywhere. You could get a digital thermometer for 15 bucks and put it in view of the webcam, too.

Downside is you would have to check constantly....

We have a black percula that has survived many tank trips due to the army, a tank crash(literally, JBJ blew a corner) We were on vacation, the cube blew out a corner, fortunately we had house sitters. They scrambled to get the water off the hardfloors. We lost everything but the one clown. His mate didn't make it. He lived in a 5gallon bucket with a powerhead until we got home. We bought a tank and equipment, while on vaca and brought it back with us. We have a 90gallon now(2yrs later), and after the cycle finishes he will be added and have plenty of clear pristine water, and plenty of places to play all by himself.

We named him Survivor. I also like the name Indomitable though.

UPDATE: The Highlander is no more! I guess he/she Wasn' imortal after all. On to the next batch.

I like the lighted switch thing, I found some round ones(easerier to just drill a hole. at Scientific america for like a buck a piece. he's a link http://www.sciplus.com/index.cfm

I'm building a new rearing tank with a small stand and a stand pipe....so thought I can put the round lighted switches in the stand. We'll see...Thanks
