it has been over a week and my what was beautiful in the lfs GSP has still not opened. i think it is time to throw away ... (poll) --- how many people think i should wait , and how many think they should be put to rest..?

what are your water parameters?
dont give up hope, gsp are very hardy and will sometimes take more than a week to adjust to new tank conditions.
what location is it in? top/ bottom?
are you still seeing a purple/pink base on the rock? is it turning white?
retest water , try a higher/ lower location and give it more time
best of luck.....al

Ive seen GSP that looked much worse than that come back relatively well. I would check all your params, water change as needed, move them to a spot with some higher water flow, and let them do their thing. Ive seen colonies close up for weeks, even a couple months, at a time, and eventually recover.

Its still good. They dont look dead. Give it some more time and leave it alone. My first colony didnt really start to come out fully for a month.

thanks for the advice , i am glad i am not the only person that is addictied to this crazy hobby .. thanks again . i will try and relax and update you when they hopefully open :)

just relax, patience is a virtue. like hormiga i've seen way much worse come back, its not looking too hot but wait.

Those still look fine.

The bumps even started deteriorating on mine and all eventually disappeared.... three weeks later (over a month after purchasing) it started to come back to life. Then over the next two weeks 15-20 polyps came open. It's been doing better every day since.

I think you should get lots more flow on that coral. It looks like stuff might be settling on it which is causing it to stay closed. Try it out and see what happens.

Get a couple of scarlet hermits. If there is hair algae on those [the tiniest web across the polyps can prevent them from opening] they'll clean it.

Mine are obnoxiously healthy at 1.025 sal; 400 cal; 9.3 alk; 80 temp; 0 on ammo/trite/trate.

This species is notorious for slow reemergence in a new tank. This may take weeks.

Dude, it does not look good. I like how the others are trying to help you staying calm, but objectively speaking, I think that is a gonner.

Don't flush it, it will just clog up you toilet. Just by looking at you pics, I would say your parameters are fine, sps looks great and good coraline algae coverage. You just got a poor specimen.

better luck next time.

It says your hobby experience is "short." Do you have any idea what your talking about? Honestly man...I have seen GSP not
open for a week and then one day they are out.

ray22, don't flush or throw anything away. Keep them in there.

i have a tunze 6100 in a 30gal tank . there is good flow in every spot of the tank ..lol

Looking at your pic it looks as though there is stuff settled on the coral. Use a turkey baster or hold it up to your powerheads and see if an detritus or other junk comes off the coral. You could even use a soft toothbrush to scrub stuff off. Just trying to help.

I was so worried, like you, about my GSP when I introduced the colony to my tank. They didn't open for what seemed like forever. My tank has great flow, but I "turkey basted" them anyway and I couldn't believe the gunk that blew off! Stuff I certainly couldn't see with the naked eye anyway.

Now, 5 weeks later, the colony is growing like a weed, literally! Fortunately for me this is what I want it to do.

Every once in a while it closes up, but that is always followed by a growth spurt.

I am so grateful I didn't panic and "flush" it out........hint...hint...

IMHO from your picture, the colony still looks viable. In fact, it is very similar to what mine looked like. You should see it now!

just give it time ...... pay no attention to yiliyang.
i too have seen gsp come back from near extinction in a tank only to take over. they are very very very very hardy. years ago i had a colony go down to 3 -4 polyps and then with patience i got them back to covering the entire back wall of the tank.

imo your colony does not look dead. get a small powerhead and direct it so a soft streamblows over the gsp rock. it will keep it clean and should help them start to come out. dont worry all will be fine.....they almost cant be killed. i have seen them survive an entire tank crash to be the lone survivor.
good luck.....al
