Ice Storm No Power

Well this is the first time I've even thought of looking at anything reef.

I was prepared to go 24 to 36 hours without power but the house got too cold and I couldn't keep up with the drop in temp. By the time I got my hands on a generator it was too late. Lost everything, and now just have to clean up. I really don't know how you could go 10 days without power no matter how prepared you are.

This is truly a very sad time for me, nothing like having a successful reef for 5-6 years not losing anything during a move and then get hit by this. I feel the worst about the death of living creatures that were in my care. Don't know if I will try to get things going again. I just don't have $4000-5000 to throw into it.

Well guys (and gals), we got our power back at noon today (just 12 hours short of 2 weeks without power). Cool thing is that my internet and cable was running the second the power came back on.

My poor poor tank though... I really am still kind of tossing around the idea of selling what is left and picking up a "big" nano (yes, yes, I know... that's one of those oxymoron things). But at the same time, the idea of starting up fresh and maybe having an SPS tank is also appealing.

My daughter has been with her grandparents since day 2 of the power outtage - she walked up to the 110 today and asked where Pootie was

Hopefully, in the next few days, I'll have water in the 110 - if I don't get the idea to get rid it.

Sorry to hear about everyone's misfortune!

I've been busy at work trying to help with the restoration. I've been in the electric business for 15 years and I have never witnessed anything close to the magnitude of this disaster.

Like Tim said we were very fortunate in Ozark to only be without power for a few hours. Everything in my tank is living, but I must admit I have been neglecting it because of other distractions. I hope to have some things ready for the March meeting.

Shaun,
That is awful. I never saw your tank, but just by talking with you I had always envisioned it as being very nice. I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully the passion for it will creep back in.

Now is the time to change the things that you wish you could have before. I doubt you will be happy with a "big" nano. The maintenance will still be the same, but you will just have a lot less space to work with. Besides, didn't you previously have a "big" nano?
Go for the sps tank. You're already there. After you get your tank balanced out and a few sps frags established, treat yourself to some full sps colonies :).

Steve, if you decide to go with the SPS tank I have some acros that I can frag to help get you going. Unfortunately, some of my more delicate slow growing acros and my capricornus did not survive my move last month. It was just too much to move all at once and some of my corals ended up getting cold even though they were in styrofoam containers for only about 3-4 hours. It was a really difficult move because the people that bought our new house bought our old house so we had one big house swap in one day.

Hope everyone is doing ok. Let me know if I can help at all :-)

My wife told me not to make any rash moves - and that I'd end up wanting bigger again. I went to FA&E today and got 150 gallons worth of IO. I'll be getting with shaar and probably just picking up my corals ASAP and run them in their makeshift rubbermaid in my house. It makes a dude like me feel guilty for stinkin' up someone else's house with my corals/LR. :bum:

The RO is running and my new 110 FOWLR (for now) should be up and goin' soon... :smokin:

I decided to tell my daughter that Pootie is "at a friend's". I think I may end up with a red sea sailfin tang to replace him as my first fish whenever the time comes...

Looking at the TOTM really pushed me over to trying to go more SPS and less BIG softies - that and the fact that it may be I end up with only zoanthids and a few others from my big loss. I saw another thread where a guy attached LR onto eggcrate for the "back wall" of his tank (allowing access to powerheads and stuff though). He made it so that there was a bit of an angle so that the ones on the bottom were closer to the foreground... I was just a wall of sps - maybe there were lps at the bottom (or clams). It was impressive to see ledges of caps and huge birdsnest colonies as the eyecandy - not that everything else wasn't cool.

I won't pester anyone stick to their offers of sps colonies, but i will most definitely appreciate any frags once the tank is "adequate".

Last night a grabbed a flashlight to take a leak... ahhh i missed my power sooo much!

Steve I also may slowly switch to SPS. I do need an upgrade of lighting first of course, which leads me to my question for you. Where did you get your pendants? I turned the one you brought over here on and just shone it on my tank, and instantly fell in love lol. I want MH for sure some day.

hello lights.com - they can even put the 14k bulbs in for you both of them came to less than 450 with shipping
text message me a time when i can get my things from you that is cool for you

I'll be free tonight after i get out of work. I get off at 7 and then have homework to do all night, but you're welcome to swing by and pick up the stuff from me :) i couldn't get your gorgonian to come back :( its still white and falling apart in my tank. but one of your sps's made it fine through it, its in my tank, the other sps didn't make it in my tank so i put it in the little on again.

let me know today or whenever when you want to swing by via text message or call me. i'll have my phone on all day.
