Ick Myths

:strange:Is there anyway to get a thread where these "myths" are explained about ick.

1. Garlic will not rid your tank of ick. Any food additive will not for that matter.
2. UV filters are useless for ridding ick unless you can filter every ounce of water through the UV.
3. All tangs have ick. I hate seeing this. A mandarin goby can CARRY ick but does not contract the parasites.

i know there are more but these are a couple of the ones i see alot and they irritate me.

any inputs would be welcome! :wavehand:

well, garlic for sure wont get rid of ich, but it will help your sick fish eat more, resulting in the sick fish having more energy to fight off the parasite.

UV does work, and the whole point is to get all the water passing through it, but it only works if the parasite are free floating, if they are already on the fish skin, UV wont do much.

last one I cant disagree lol

I would add best medication is to make your sick fish EAT alot and have PERFECT water quality so it can fight it off. just like when we get sick, we eat some soup and take a nap :)

about the UV i always see people saying, i installed a UV filter and now my ich is gone. i am always like oh ya a miracle pice of equipment. if this was true we would all have them standard on all tanks SW or FW.

well it does kill free floating ICH

but you are right if your fish has ICH, most UV will do is to stop if from spreading to other fishes. it will not cure any fish. (unless the fish goes under UV light :P but that would deform the fishes DNA as well :P haha)

I think we need to clarify the difference between eliminating ich..and doing things that may reduce the impact ich has even while remaining in the system. As far as I know, the only way to completely eliminate the parasite is to remove all fish from the reef for an extended period of time.

I have ich in my system...for three years now. I just recently lost my achilles tang even though he seemed relatively unbothered by ich in the 3 years I had him. It seemed like one day the population of parasites just exploded and it was too much for him.

Meanwhile, 15+ other fish seem fine...just as they always have.

I don't have UV on my system, but I'm thinking that adding UV might have prevented the sudden population explosion. However, I'm not trying to fool myself into thinking that it will eliminate the parasite from the system.
