Ick shield

Can anyone direct me to a peer review article and or independent study on the effectiveness of ick shield, specifically the active ingredient? I have done several searches but have yet to find any information on its mode of effectiveness, other than the active ingredient is used in humans to treat malaria. The only use I can find for it in veterinary medicine is a cocktail unassociated with parasite control.

Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Thanks scooter. I'd really like to see an independent study and or scientific peer reviewed study. It bothers me that there doesn't seem to be any hard core info on this stuff. To make the claim of effectiveness I'd think there would have to be something in the way of tests being done.

Your not going to find a paper on it I don't believe. It's mentioned in disease books as used by zoos and public aquariums. Started with sharks I believe. First hand experience here and pure CP works. The best med available for velvet. Ich shield is Chinese CP which can be hit or miss.

CP???

What does that stand for??

Also, ick shield is made in the UK I think, not China.

Noga recommends it against Amyloodinium.
(Not Ick-Shield, but CP)

Packaged in the UK, but with Chloroquine made in China or at least thats what most have to come say. Obviously there is no way to be sure since when you call New Life Spectrum no one will answer your calls or return them...

Very true. I've tried to talk to them. No can do. What I don't get is why they say (or at least in an interview I read) the active ingredient is a broad spectrum veterinary anti parasitic when it's not, that I can find, used in veterinary medicine as a parasite control. Rather in humans for malaria.

I'd simply like some factual information as to the process by which ick shield is supposed to work. I'd think a company would be willing to at least give that bit of information.

Made in China is not necessarily bad as long as it comes from a manufacturer of pharmaceuticals. There you might actually get executed for producing bad medicines.

True but it's extremely difficult if not impossible to know the actual source within China. I know from now on I will take the extra time and money to get it from a place that tests each batch they get.

For the record I have spoke with the owner of New Life Spectrum one time on the phone about two years ago. At the time I didn't ask him specifics about where the CP originated from

Here is a study where it was used a long with other treatments for ich.

You might need to broaden your search terms to quinine-based medications/compounds to find more info on it.

It was found to be effective in that study as a bath, and zoos/aquariums seem to have found that 10mg/L seems to effectively kill it.

oh.. and this guys seems to have actually studied/researched it, but he didn't say anything about publishing his findings:

but you can read the posts in that thread and I feel pretty confident about it's capability.

Alprazo has been using the stuff for many years and turned me onto it ( also instructed me how to force feed fish, very handy to say the least). It's mostly used with sharks since they can't tolerate copper. I was able to speak with the curator at the Long Island Aquarium yesterday via phone, along with one of the marine biologist there that administers the meds and their go to for treating fish with ich is Copper Power. They only use CP with sharks and I was advised to dose it every 5 days for a minimum of 20 days (4 doses) with no water changes in between. He advised me that CP is very forgiving and difficult to overdose to the point of killing fish. I will be trying this very soon and will let everyone know how it turns out

Dmorty, thanks for sharing this information. Did they also mention what concentration you're supposed to dose at with their routine?

Are you personally using ICK Shield or you're sourcing your CP from ebay?

If you can share that information, that would be great!

Thanks.

Never source the CP from eBay, that's questionable if it's truly CP. I have used Ich shield powder and have had success but This past time I used it, somehow it didn't work like it has. Today I just purchased a kilo today from fishman chemical (most cost effective way to purchase it) I trust their source for CP more than New Life Spectrum. I also believe that treating every 5 days for 4 treatments is the best route for using CP. Nogas book references that but compared to the info provided in that book there is relatively little on CP
