Getting Warmed Up

Getting Warmed Up

Hello RC,

Name's Scott. Live in the DC area. Ran a 75 gal fowlr tank 6yrs ago but had to move. I'm in a position to once again setup a tank. This one will be 185 gal with the 75 being used as a sump.

Tank has arrived and been placed in the wall behind our basement bar. Fun really starts next week.

I've been to this site 100's of times over the years and read 1000's of posts. Please accept my thanks for getting me this far. Look forward to reading & learning more in the days ahead.

Hello all!

Hello all!

Well, this has been along time coming. I have been doing freshwater for about 10 years. I know, yay for me. Last year, around Christmas, I bought a 60 gallon bow front with a 15+/- sump, in hopes of doing a saltwater tank. I bought it from a guy on Craigslist, and he told me to come straight to RC to get started. Super cool dude, he is on here somewhere and I hope to run into him. I got my taxes back and decided to build a new stand for my tank. Built the new stand and put my Oscars back in their new home. I decided to build a 2 level tank stand, and my upper tank will be here on Feb,19th. 40GAL with low iron glass front from glasscages.com. It does seem odd to me, to use the bowfront with overflows and a sump for Oscars, and the 40gal glass for marine but at this point thats where I'm at. I got some salt, a skimmer, 3 T8 36in fixtures (two blue actinic, one 10K) and am so full of anxiety for the damned tank to come I feel like I'm 12 again carrying home my 10gal with rocks and a filter in it. Can't believe I used to have enough energy to carry a 50# glass brick 10+ blocks in the name of goldfish.... Well, anyway, that's my story. I am beyond new and trying to learn all I can. I hope to accomplish a live rock tank, then add some corals. I could care less about fish at this point. I have set a 2 year minimum for fish.

Hi There!
My name is Lara and I am new to this love of reefing. I was first introduced to
This amazing hobby several months ago by a very dear friend and it was love at first sight...lol..I was simply amazed and knew I had to start my own reef tank. I also knew I have to get a peppermint shrimp as well, his became my little buddy...lol
I bought a 29g Bio Cube on Feb. 13....I mixed the salt water and filled the tank. I have the heater in as well. That's as far as I've gotten. I welcome all help, suggestions, feed back, etc. Right now , I'm trying to decide if I should go with live rock or base rock....any suggestions???

I would definitely go with the Live rock. All the hitch hikers and weird critters you find on the rock are as fascinating as the fish and corals. Plus it will keep you entertained for the next couple of weeks while you wait for your tank to cycle.

Sent ya a PM

Wats up RC! I'm a 22 yr old surveyor from NC. I have a 90gal sps tank and a 30long lps tank, I've followed a couple threads on here before and I finally decided to join. Can't wait to start posting!

Hello all!

I am very new to aquariums in general. I have wanted one for at least 6 years but never seemed to have the time, the coin or a combination of both. Well, an opportunity came up that I couldn't pass up. My neighbor had a 24 gallon JBJ Nano Cube that has been established for 2 years. He didn't want it anymore and gave it to me for free!

So now, I am learning - and learning fast! This trial by fire thing is gonna be tricky. Looking forward to it!

Hello My name is Jordan and have been out of the Aquarium scene for some time now. I have had some successful freshwater tanks and am used to all the water changing and checking ph balance and making sure the water is just right! Well I always wanting a coral reef setup and I figure I would start out small and go with the Dymax iq3 2gal. I know there are a few members on here that have had some success with them. Though I am new I feel it is a cheaper way to get into this hobby and later down the road build a bigger setup. I will start off with live rock and live coral and see what happens during the cycling periods. I plan on going with an Nanotuners par38 12k LEDs sincce I have read that the stock setup is not enough. I will also upgrade parts as I go along. I know that it can be a little harder to care for a nano reef tank but am willing for the challenge. Thanks for a great site I am open to all suggestions!

Just started my first reef tank back in October of last year and was directed to this site by my local reef shop. I found some great arcticles that really helped me setting up my tank.

thank you,

Hi,

My name's Bruno, I'm from Portugal and I keep a 35 Gallon tank atm. I've been working on some extras like a quarentine tank, a small hospital and a copepods culture tank in order to start a new 150 gallon soon.
I hope I can learn a lot from you, and I'll surely will.

Hey all my name is Jennifer and my husband and I just started a 65 gallon fowlr and will work to a reef tank. So right now we are running the 65 saltwater and a 55 freshwater (we couldn't give up the freshwater lol). As of right now we only have a clown fish in the 65 we will run it for a couple weeks at least before we add anything else. Everyone has been very helpful so far on this site and I am very excited to start the saltwater venture!

I am returning to the hobby. I had a reef tank about 12 years ago then had kids. One unsupervised feeding can kill everything. After that we sold the tank. We recently purchased a 90gal and are starting to get it stocked with life rock. I ordered from Tampa Bay and so far I have the first shipment of my package. Will get the next one this week with any luck.

 Hello all! I have been lurking around the local shop, ogling over their reef tanks for years. I finally decided to "dive" into the hobby. I joined Reef Central a few weeks ago and have found some good information-Thanks!

My tank is a glass Aqueon 150 gal (72x18x29) with a 75 gal sump. I have ordered a Maristar 72" HQI T5 combo lighting system and a Super Reef Octopus XP 3000 in-sump cone skimmer. I am still trying to decide on the remaining parts. My custom wood tank stand should be finished early next week. I can't wait to start building my tank! :bounce1:

P.S. I noticed a couple of other Jeep freaks on the forum which I found interesting to have the same two interests. So a special hello to the other Jeep nuts!

My husband and I are also getting into a reef tank. I am trying to convince my daughter to give up her 10gal freshwater tank so I can use it for a quarantine tank but she jsut won't go for it. I am trying to learn how to navigate this site. Do you have any pointers?
Thanks
Susan

Hi

My name is Cindi, my bf Marty and I are starting our first reef tank. We have both had fresh water in the past but when we stopped by a LFS that was all salt we were convinced to go salt. We do have a 30 gal fresh that we set up so we wouldn't feel the need to "rush things" with the salt tank.

We have set up a 90 gal DS with a 40 sump. We have an eshopps 100 skimmer, 2 9.5 mag return pumps, one attached to a SCWD wave maker. We went with a DSB, about 5 inches. Currently we have 50 lbs of base rock, which is mostly burried in the sand. We will be adding live rock this week. DS has two 1 1/2 inch bulk heads for overflows and custom pvc and acrylic overflow boxes. For lighting we have Solar Xtreme HO T5.

We have just started to cycle the tank and are looking forward all the excitment to come!

Newbie Terry here

Newbie Terry here

I recently got back into aquariums. I currently have a nice 90g african cichlid setup in my dining room that everyone eating just sort of stars at during dinner. From mainly visits to fish store you can't help but notice the marine stuff and my interest has drifted towards setting up my own saltwater tank. I'm keeping it budget for now until i move and have room to keep both my 90g cichlid tank and which ever size marine tank i get. I used my old 30g as a homemade sump/refugium, ordered a large protein skimmer and starting putting stuff together. I was going to use a 29 for a dt to start but think i'm going to pick up a cheap 55g instead. My goal is to get experience raising a few fish and corals using a sump/refugium setup so when i move in a year or so i can have more confidence buying a 125g +/- and have most of the equipment on hand

Hi our names are Rachel and Doug, we headed out to the store today hoping to expand on our fresh water tank and by the time we left the store we had decided to take the few fresh water fish and move them to a smaller tank for our daughter to place in her room. So now we are taking our 55 gallon tank and transforming it into a our first salt water tank. We'll start with fish only then we want to expand to a reef tank.
