Hello everyone,

Not new to the site but new to posting, just realized need 50 posts to see the fs section:headwalls: so I guess I better stop lurking and come out of the shadows.

Hello RC! Happy to be a newly registered member of the community. Having that in mind, bear with me if I post in the wrong area, etc. I'm also new to SW Aquariums. Getting a 48" 120 gal (fingers crossed) and was hoping to save some money on the light just looking for now. Came across a used Odyssea 750W Fixture - 2 x 250W mh, 4 x 65W pc, lunar leds, fans. One of the mh ballast doesn't work and guy says he doesn't know why. Both mh bulbs work but need replacing sooner than later. one of the leds is shot but replaceable. no stand legs but replaceable and i want to hang anyways. pc are all working and farily new, less than 50 hours use he claims. He wants $50 for it. Should I jump on this light? Is it worth it to buy? Estimated costs to replace/repair to fully working order vs. new lower end light? Hope to hear something soon. Thanks a lot

Hello RC. Great site and I'm learning new things everyday as I discover new threads to review. Looking forward to getting started on my build but not until I have enough knowledge to be dangerous. No questions for now but I'm sure that will change soon. Thanks for having me in the community. I'll keep reading and learning for now...

NEW here and to the hobby

Hello everyone! Im Mark aka Bookers (Thats one of my favorite bourbons). I have never had a fish tank. A friend is selling his neglected one. It's a 35G Hex. He is selling me it for 200. has everything except the skimmer broke. He has about 70lbs live rock, live sand bed and coral, kenya trees, yellow pollups, purple algae, a few mushrooms, small worm skimmers and leather with 3 fish: Maroon Clown, Purple Grammer and one more small one. lots of algae, needs a cleaning...Its a reef tank established for 8 years...he claims it more than about the fish...everything is living in there. I want a few more fish but the size doesnt allow for me to add my creativity. I dont like the size, stand and setup so I am goiing to look at a 55G set up off craigslist for 150. maybe get for 100 or less then I can still buy my friends set up as he has lots invested time money etc....then I have room to build and make it a little more my tank.
Thanks for reading hopefully get going sooon and have fun before I go broke lol

Hi... Another newbie here.

I was recently (about 2 months) given a mature but neglected 65 gal hex reef by an acquaintance/friend of a friend who is going through a divorce. The Skimmer died and she decided that it was too much due to her circumstances, but she didn't want to part out the tank and sell it because her kids were pretty attached to the fish. She gave it to me for FREE, because she knew I was enough of a nerd to do the research and handle it. LOL

I'm slowly cleaning it up... mostly a bit of an algae problem... and replacing items as I go along. Their was almost no CUC when I brought the tank home so I've added some snails(both algae and detritus types), a FEW hermits, and a couple of emerald crabs. My husband gifted me with a pair of Scooter Blennies after he caught me looking at them while picking out snails (before I knew a thing about them), and though they arrived very skinny and have fattened up in my less than pristine tank I have plans to add a refugium to keep the pods coming. Despite their drab coloring their antics make them most endearing.

It came with mushrooms, ricordia, xenia, zoas, and what I'm pretty sure is a giant green polyp Duncan that my male Ocellaris sometimes hosts when his lady is being a hog with the BTA. The Duncan has areas where it has died back, but it has started regrowing some of those polyps since I've started caring for it.
I plan to add a good bit of new LR including some shelf rock so that I can add more corals and boost the diversity. I'll probably need to re-home some old LR COVERED in Shrooms... LOL

I'm taking the "slow and steady wins the race" approach, and won't be making any sudden drastic overhaul type changes.

A BIG thanks to Capn and PaulB who gave me such a speedy reply and welcome over in the Refugium thread.

Hello everyone new to the salt water hobby. Just bought 150 gallon tank with filters and a skimmer. Don't really know all the terms yet, need lots of help. We are doing this as a family. My wife and I have two kids a 14 year old daughter and a 10 year old son. We always wanted a fish tank and finally got one, bro in law has a couple tanks and has been helping us out, but he lives in another state so he turned us on to this web site. This is awesome to read ideas and learn new stuff. We are putting water in the tank (forgot to say it was used) it has some leaks around some sills no big deal yet. We are looking for ideas to get it going. It came with two 5 gallon buckets of corral sand, a few dead rocks, a bucket of salt. Just wondering where to start after we fix the leaks. All the pumps work and the skimmer made foam with regular water after about a day. It is a tall skimmer maybe 3' 6" or taller. We need some experts help. Thank you

Hey Everyone,

I never really put up any pictures when I joined, but I just posted a video of my aquarium on YouTube. This video was taken a couple of days ago, and it is already outdated as I picked up 2 new corals and a couple more fish over the weekend!

Take a look at the video and let me know what you think! Enjoy!

Old / New To Hobby

Sold a 140 Salt tank 20 years ago had everything top of the line and am well aware that there have been a lot of changes. A local shop is going out of business and I have purchased a 125 set up right now it has 125 lbs of live rock about 13 fish all small assorted. about 50 lbs of dead? rock 4" sand bed 2 U4 filters 1 800 power head and a C-360 canister filter. 2 sets of 36" lights not sure what type as it will not deliver until 14 August. As the shop is going out of business in order to head towards a good reef system what else should I try to aquire. I am no millionaire but do not mind getting the best I can afford. So all you experts what am I missing?

New to saltwater been keeping freshwater for a number of years. So far it has been fun, costly and it sure seems like a steep learning curve. Looking forward to reading a learning more about this hobby and trying to avoid making costly mistakes. :-)
