Hi... Another newbie here.
I was recently (about 2 months) given a mature but neglected 65 gal hex reef by an acquaintance/friend of a friend who is going through a divorce. The Skimmer died and she decided that it was too much due to her circumstances, but she didn't want to part out the tank and sell it because her kids were pretty attached to the fish. She gave it to me for FREE, because she knew I was enough of a nerd to do the research and handle it. LOL
I'm slowly cleaning it up... mostly a bit of an algae problem... and replacing items as I go along. Their was almost no CUC when I brought the tank home so I've added some snails(both algae and detritus types), a FEW hermits, and a couple of emerald crabs. My husband gifted me with a pair of Scooter Blennies after he caught me looking at them while picking out snails (before I knew a thing about them), and though they arrived very skinny and have fattened up in my less than pristine tank I have plans to add a refugium to keep the pods coming. Despite their drab coloring their antics make them most endearing.
It came with mushrooms, ricordia, xenia, zoas, and what I'm pretty sure is a giant green polyp Duncan that my male Ocellaris sometimes hosts when his lady is being a hog with the BTA. The Duncan has areas where it has died back, but it has started regrowing some of those polyps since I've started caring for it.
I plan to add a good bit of new LR including some shelf rock so that I can add more corals and boost the diversity. I'll probably need to re-home some old LR COVERED in Shrooms... LOL
I'm taking the "slow and steady wins the race" approach, and won't be making any sudden drastic overhaul type changes.
A BIG thanks to Capn and PaulB who gave me such a speedy reply and welcome over in the Refugium thread.
