I'm Bobby and I'm glad to find a site with so many enthusiasts in one place. I have a 40gal tank for my GSM paired with what i think is a WSM- Maybe I can get some help.

Hi , I am new to this reef business..although I have had a salt water tank with fish and live rock on and off for the last 12 years..
My new 90 gallon reef tank was set up a week ago and a kalkstar was added. the next morning we woke to a saturated floor, sort of a mini flood in the living room.. It leaked through the top around the gasket.. It never did stir the kalwasser during the night either.. Anybody know anything about these thingss?? thanks

Hello all, First let me say what a great group of people! I have been reading as many of the posts as possible to learn as much as I can from those who have already experienced all that I may one day run across.
I have just set up (last 60 days) a 90G FOWLR tank. It has 75# of dead rock from Marco Rocks, and also 40# or live sand from the same. I have seeded the rock with some live rock from my LFS (about 10#). I am running a sump with Bioballs and a protein Skimmer and return pump jammed in the other end. For Lighting I am running 2x 260W PC with 2 actnic and 2 12k each and leds for night.
I have a few questions but will post them in the newbie area!

Hello, This is Sandi Standley,(ladyins) from Twin Falls, Idaho.This is a great resource for everyone involved with saltwater aquariums. I am also a member of IMAS in Boise.
I started this journey in October 09 with a 24gGallon JBJ Nano.My husband convinced me that I was not going to be satisfied with that and in November we bought a 90 gallon complete setup from a good friend and saltwater mentor here in town. Since then I have gone through just about everything a newbie can: red slime, an ich infestation with fish mortality, floods from non working overflow, fallow tank, qt tank,copper treatments and now green/brown hair algae. I'm gonna be a pro before my 6 month anniversary!
Currently things are going ok other than the algae and a diatom bloom in the 24. My tests are all in good/normal range on both tanks. I test weekly.
Here is what my "hobby/other job" consists of:
90 Gallon Glass:
70# LR,50#Aragonite rock, 50# live sand, 10# Garf Grunge, 4 Powerheads, 20 gallon sump w/700gph pump, Vertex 180 skimmer,CPR-CS100 overflow. Lighting is: 6-54w T5 HOs-3/10k white & 3 blue actinic and 1 40w T12 50/50.
Critters: 2 clowns, 1 blue hippo, 1 scooter blenny, 3 small bl/gr chromis, 2 skunk cleaner shrimp, 3 pep shrimp, 1 pencil urchin, 1 porcelin crab, misc hermits, turbo & other snails, small sponge & a feather duster.
Corals:Ricordia, mushrooms, toadstools,star, pulsing and non pulsing Xenia, plate Montipora, duncans, green polyps,pink zoas, torch and bubble(clowns are hosting to it)

24 gallon:JBJ nano, fully contained. I do have an addtional skimmer coming
30#LR, 20#live sand, 2# Garf Grunge
Critters: 1 Tomato clown, 1 sixline wrasse, 1 YWgoby,1 pistol shrimp,1 spotted mandarin.
Corals: Ricordia, Zoas, Xenia, gorgonian, cabbage, white spot star, 1 feather duster.
All of these are pretty small in both tanks, but growing well.
I hope to learn lots more from your forums and continue to enjoy my new tank family.

How do you do a partial water change with a sump? Do you drain from the main tank or from the sump? I would think you would add to the sump to keep from disturbing the main tank?
I am just now setting up a new 90 gallon tank and have finished my sump and drain. I am now working on the overflow box. I am going to put in an ATO but was wondering the same thing as WishFish. Do you put a shut off valve so that when you are doing a water change it doesn't automatically add fresh water.

You drain and add new salt water from the sump area. Turn off the main pump and let the water rise first in the sump(its a good test to see if your sump can handle the water in case of a power failure)

That makes sense. I didn't even think of turning the pump off. I was thinking I had to turn the return cutoff valves to closed. just didn't have it pictured in my mind completely. I have a 46 gallon that I have had 16 months but it doesn't have a sump. This is new to me in that regard.

Hello all,
My name is Winston. I have been keeping a small fw tank for a couple years now. I just recently started my first sw tank just a few days ago. It's still cycling, but hopefully it will be done by Monday when I return.
My tank is 37 g; dimensions are 30.25 x 12.5 x 22.75 inches. Currently, I'm running an odyssa ps 75 skimmer and koralia 2 powerhead. The lighting is a coralife dual 65 w cf; however, only one of the ballasts are broken so I'm only running a 65 w 50/50 actinic. I plan on building a 10 g sump/fuge in the near future, but I intend on running just the skimmer and powerhead in the interim.
