If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello everyone. New guy from Texas. I am not new to saltwater but am new to large tanks. I've has my 180g with 200 lbs of LR up for about 3 weeks now. I am still in the curing process so no fish or corals for another month or so.

Hi Smith! Welcome to RC! I just got registered myself. Not new to big tanks but new to salt almost 1 year ago. Wow its way different than fresh! My 1st SW tank is my current 210 mixed reef. I learned 90% of how to setup and care for it right here on RC. Good luck with your 180, slow and steady but you already know that!

Newbee question: How do I get my tank info to show up at the bottom of every post. Probably easy but I can't seem to get it to work. Any help appreciated.

Hi, Im new to the hobby. I will be setting up a reef in a 200 gallon tank with a 100 gallon tank below it for filtration.

I am working with someone who has 5+ years experience, and a, very excited to have a mostly autonomous ecosystem!

lighting questions

lighting questions

I am new to this and I am wanting to set up a reef tank, I have a 46 gal bow front, 21 in water depth, first question is could I get away with only using 175w MH? Also the tank is 36 inches long, and I have found some combo lighting (MH, T5's, LED moonlights) that I was looking into, the only thing is there is only one MH mounted in the center. Is this going to be adequate for a 36 in long tank? I am wanting to have a peaceful reef tank, some nice fish, and want to be able to grow a wide spectrum of corals. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hey everyone! Name is Dono (RL is Ed). Not sure why I haven't properly introduced myself as I've been browsing and posting for a while, but I'm really glad to be apart of this community and grateful for all of the knowledge I've acquired while here. It has been invaluable and I wish I had a way, other than donating (which I will do), to repay the community!

My tank spec's should be in my signature, but if you have any questions about my setup or what I went through setting it up, please feel free to message me via the boards or contact me for my e-mail. Tank is running for just about a month, so I've experienced some of the annoying newbie mistakes and adventures!

Hope to meet some of you soon.

Just go to your User Control Panel (User CP), and edit your signature. When you make a post, make sure you have 'show signature' checked off.

Hi everybody :) I've been looking at the forums for awhile and decided to join to get some help with my new tank. Been keeping freshwater for a long time, moved from easy stuff to more challenging tanks...hoping to do that in saltwater as well. Just set up a 15g (more like 14.7g I got in Japan) because I couldn't wait to get a bigger tank and I have tons of tanks around from my old freshwater hobby from before I joined the military. I just can't help myself when it comes to tanks!
Planning on getting a 300g (possibly building it myself) when I buy a house and keeping lionfish (and possibly even more tanks lol).
Thanks in advance for all of your help! I know I'm going to frequent this forum a lot. :)

My 1st Reef tank with basement sump and Refugium

My 1st Reef tank with basement sump and Refugium

Hello all,

My name is Jim, I have been reading and studing the treads on this site and others for hundreds of hours. It has been a great resource. I used to have a 125 gal. fish with live rock tank for several years until I sold my house and the tank conveyed. It currently contains clothing as it is being used as a dresser in the living room. I guess the current owner couldn't figure it out. oh well.

My wife said I could have a tank in the living room, but did not want the mess of maintaining it on the floors. This was a good excuse for me to build a fish room in the basement next to the water heater. The tank upstairs drains thru a lifereef overflow thru flex tubing about 25 feet to the sump. I may someday upgrade to a much bigger tank, so I tried to oversize everything to handle up to a 180 gallon tank.

this will be my first attemp at keeping live coral. I know very little about them except that I want everything.

So here are a few pictures of my tank. Thanks for all your help. I did it the hard way, never asked questions, but read , read, and read some more. Hope I didn't waste too much money. :)

My current water parameters are:
nitrate: 0
Nitrite: 0
Ammonia: 0
Magnesium: high > 1500 need to bring it down with water changes
Ca: 470
Phosphate: 0
Alkalinity: 9dkh I want this up a little
ph: 7.95-8.05 I want to bring this up
Salinity: 1.025

A Photo of the RSM in my living room. I hope to get a better picture later. this was the tanks first leak test.

My two clowns. Missing from photo are the Green Chromy, the Bi-colored Blenny, and Fire Shrimp. A Vortec MP10 is on left.

Re-arranging some of the rock and coral. The tank is 9 weeks old. I bought the RSM tank itself from the LFS on Dec 22, 2010. I used dry rock and dry sand for my build. Cycling took about 3 weeks. Fish and CUC were added over the course of 2 months.

My Basement sump. Everything including the sink was built for the reef tank. Almost every part was bought from Bulk Reef Supply (BRS). There is no equipment behind or under the tank itself except for the Vortec MP10 controller.

The sump is an Aqueon Model 4 sump with DSB refugium. Cheto is just starting to grow. The skimmer is an Reef Octopus Extreme XS 160. I like the skimmer.

Tunze Osmolator ATO. Note the vent pipe on the drain pvc pipe coming down from upstairs, the top of the vent pipe has the purple pvc cleaner on it. The Tunze Osmolator pump is in the bottom of the elevated barrel. It pumps makeup water from the barrel up hill into the vent pipe via the black tubing so it does not syphon. Also note the clear tube on right side of barrel. It shows the water depth in the barrel. Also, the barrel, if it overfills the float value at the top, will drain out the clear tubing to the sink. I use gravity and the white water hose to fill buckets and the large barrel on the floor to make salt water.

I do not leave the Tunze turned on because it has overfilled my tank by 4 inches 3 times now, and I have left it turned on 3 times. Its batting 100% failure rate at this point. I'm not happy with it. I think I will replace it with something else, maybe a reef computer.

My GenX Mak4 return pump with priming stack. This pump is overkill for the lifereef overflow used on the back of the RSM 130d. I split the water flow from the pump. Some goes upstairs, and some gets recycled back to the front of the sump to be processed again. The flow rate to the tank is about 300 gph. I also use a GFO and Carbon Reactor. Also note that the heater controller shows 81.4 degrees, but 3 thermometers all show 78.5 degrees. Not sure what is wrong with my $100 heater. I am not very happy with it.

thats it for now, I will post a few more pics later on. Again, thanks for all your help.

I'm new to this forum and relatively new to this hobby (convert from freshwater). I'm currently running a 29 gallon Biocube with some live rock and a pair of clownfish, moving into some corals and a fire shrimp soon.

Hi Everyone,

I'm extremely new to reef keeping. So new that I haven't purchased my tank yet. My husband and I will be going this weekend to Richmond Aquarium. I live in Virginia. I have read 2 books cover-to-cover and have read many online articles. My goal is to read as many posts in this forum as I can before Saturday. There is a ton of great information on here.:reading:

I'm very excited about getting into this hobby. My parents had a saltwater tank when I was very young. I remember all the cool fish and eels they had. I would sit there fascinated for hours. My husband and I do not have any kids yet, but we plan on it. I hope one day to fascinate my children with a reef tank. I do remember what a pain saltwater fish tanks were back when I was little (the 80s). I'm excited that the technology has improved so vastly.

I plan on purchasing at least a 75 gallon tank system this weekend. I will let you all know how it goes. I'm very excited!

Thanks for all of the help you have already offered to me in the other threads.

29gal Bio Cube

29gal Bio Cube

Hi There!
My name is Lara and I am new to this love of reefing. I was first introduced to
This amazing hobby several months ago by a very dear friend and it was love at first sight...lol..I was simply amazed and knew I had to start my own reef tank. I also knew I have to get a peppermint shrimp as well, his became my little buddy...lol
I bought a 29g Bio Cube on Feb. 13....I mixed the salt water and filled the tank. I have the heater in as well. That's as far as I've gotten. I welcome all help, suggestions, feed back, etc. Right now , I'm trying to decide if I should go with live rock or base rock....any suggestions???

Hey guys, names Jon. I bought a Red Sea Max 130 about 2 years ago, loved it, but due to the economy I had to dismantle and store it. Now that I have a new job, and a steady income I'm putting it back together. Will start a thread and put some pics up as it gets going... until then, anyone know of a club in Southern Orange County, CA?
