My 1st Reef tank with basement sump and Refugium
My 1st Reef tank with basement sump and Refugium
Hello all,
My name is Jim, I have been reading and studing the treads on this site and others for hundreds of hours. It has been a great resource. I used to have a 125 gal. fish with live rock tank for several years until I sold my house and the tank conveyed. It currently contains clothing as it is being used as a dresser in the living room. I guess the current owner couldn't figure it out. oh well.
My wife said I could have a tank in the living room, but did not want the mess of maintaining it on the floors. This was a good excuse for me to build a fish room in the basement next to the water heater. The tank upstairs drains thru a lifereef overflow thru flex tubing about 25 feet to the sump. I may someday upgrade to a much bigger tank, so I tried to oversize everything to handle up to a 180 gallon tank.
this will be my first attemp at keeping live coral. I know very little about them except that I want everything.
So here are a few pictures of my tank. Thanks for all your help. I did it the hard way, never asked questions, but read , read, and read some more. Hope I didn't waste too much money.
My current water parameters are:
nitrate: 0
Nitrite: 0
Ammonia: 0
Magnesium: high > 1500 need to bring it down with water changes
Ca: 470
Phosphate: 0
Alkalinity: 9dkh I want this up a little
ph: 7.95-8.05 I want to bring this up
Salinity: 1.025
A Photo of the RSM in my living room. I hope to get a better picture later. this was the tanks first leak test.
My two clowns. Missing from photo are the Green Chromy, the Bi-colored Blenny, and Fire Shrimp. A Vortec MP10 is on left.
Re-arranging some of the rock and coral. The tank is 9 weeks old. I bought the RSM tank itself from the LFS on Dec 22, 2010. I used dry rock and dry sand for my build. Cycling took about 3 weeks. Fish and CUC were added over the course of 2 months.
My Basement sump. Everything including the sink was built for the reef tank. Almost every part was bought from Bulk Reef Supply (BRS). There is no equipment behind or under the tank itself except for the Vortec MP10 controller.
The sump is an Aqueon Model 4 sump with DSB refugium. Cheto is just starting to grow. The skimmer is an Reef Octopus Extreme XS 160. I like the skimmer.
Tunze Osmolator ATO. Note the vent pipe on the drain pvc pipe coming down from upstairs, the top of the vent pipe has the purple pvc cleaner on it. The Tunze Osmolator pump is in the bottom of the elevated barrel. It pumps makeup water from the barrel up hill into the vent pipe via the black tubing so it does not syphon. Also note the clear tube on right side of barrel. It shows the water depth in the barrel. Also, the barrel, if it overfills the float value at the top, will drain out the clear tubing to the sink. I use gravity and the white water hose to fill buckets and the large barrel on the floor to make salt water.
I do not leave the Tunze turned on because it has overfilled my tank by 4 inches 3 times now, and I have left it turned on 3 times. Its batting 100% failure rate at this point. I'm not happy with it. I think I will replace it with something else, maybe a reef computer.
My GenX Mak4 return pump with priming stack. This pump is overkill for the lifereef overflow used on the back of the RSM 130d. I split the water flow from the pump. Some goes upstairs, and some gets recycled back to the front of the sump to be processed again. The flow rate to the tank is about 300 gph. I also use a GFO and Carbon Reactor. Also note that the heater controller shows 81.4 degrees, but 3 thermometers all show 78.5 degrees. Not sure what is wrong with my $100 heater. I am not very happy with it.
thats it for now, I will post a few more pics later on. Again, thanks for all your help.
Jim
