I have been doing this for about 3 months now, I have to 40 gallon breeder tanks that are salt water. I also have a 55 gallon fresh water tank which I am going to get rid of. I plan on saving up and working toward getting a 300 or 400 gallon salt water tank. I hope to learn a few things in this forum and know what is the good stuff to buy and look for and get something out of this.:D

Hi my name is Rick. I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. Played with a 35 gallon saltwater tank about 15 years ago...However, it seems like everything has changed since then. Starting a 30 gallon cube style glass tank that I was given.

Hi, my name is Nate. I've kept mostly freshwater tanks before, and a basic 29 gallon reef with soft corals about 10 years ago.

I've been gathering equipment to set up a new reef tank that I hope to fill by the end of the year. I'm a tech geek, so I'm trying to automate as much as I can with this tank (auto top off, water changes, monitoring). So far, I have the following equipment for this set up:

- ADA 120-P High Clarity Glass 65 Gallon Tank, drilled for 3/4" return and 1.5" overflow
- 3 AquaIllumination Sol Super Blue Lighting Modules w/Controller
- Neptune Systems APEX Aqua Controller w/Display, Lab Grade Ph and Temp Probes
- AETech 22 Gallon Reef Devil Pro Refugium Sump w/Mag 9.5 Return Pump
- AETech Reef Devil Deluxe Protein Skimmer w/Mag 7 Pump
- EcoTech Vortech MP40W Pump
- Eheim Jager 200w TS Series Heater
- Tunze Osmolator 3155 Auto-Top Off System
- SpectraPure CSP-60 RO System with MaxCap D2 DI System

I'm going to have lots of questions as I go along, but I'm looking forward to learning.

New to Reefer Madness - 2 questions

New to Reefer Madness - 2 questions

Hello, thank you for putting this great forum together. I live in Yorktown Virginia and am transitioning my 265 gallon tank from freshwater to reef. Overwhelmed at the moment. Got 120#s of Manado and Bali Bali Alor live rock curing right now. The 40 #s of live sand has made it dissapear in a milky fog for days now though, **** me off (just added one bag to existed live sand). I assumed my existing is dead live sand since it has been in freshwater from 3 years. two questions:
1) any reccs for marine books. I have heard that Marine Chemistry by Chris.R. Brightwell and The Reef Aquarium, Vol. 3: Science, Art, and Technology would be good to start with, but is there an obvious 1st pick out there?
2) any good threads on setting up a refugium. I have a 40 gallon filtration tank under my 265 that has enough space i think to do a refugium.

thank you, Dave

Very new here. Hello all. My roommates and I had a freshwater tank in college and loved it. Last year I re-introduced myself to the hobby with setting up a 38g Freshwater tank in my living room. I am having some success and would like to also maintain a Saltwater tank. I've begged and pleaded with my wife and I think I'm allowed a small one (although I know the increased difficultly that brings). I'm leaning towards am all in one system, maybe a 28g biocube right now. Plan to actually get things started around December. Any ideas or thoughts let me know. Glad to be here

Back in the hobby after 6 years

So I am back in the hobby after a long break. My last tank was a 29 gal hex reef. This time I am actually doing two tanks: a 10 nano and a 90. I am just experimenting with the nano and most of my questions are for the 90.

90 (48L x 18W x 29H) bow front
50 lbs lr
90 lbs live sand
wet/dry
protein skimmer
48" T5 4 bulb 52w high output

Hello All

Hello All

Hi, my name is Al. I live in Webswter Groves, MO south of St Louis. I've been keeping aquariuns on and off since I was 12yrs. old. I started my first salt water tank 8 yrs.ago, for our 1st anniversary. A 29gal FOWLR setup. Now that I'm getting a little older, and can't keep up with 3 or 4 Weimaraners at a time. I've shown and hunted the breed for over 30 years... I want to delve a little deeper into reefkeeping. I'm down to two Weims now and have a little more time and money to devote to my tank. I presently have a 55gal setup with about 70lbs. of live rock an about a 1 1/2" sand bed medium to course argonite. I moved the setup from Chicago a year ago this past June, and I feel I'ts just now recovering from the move. Last Sunday I added a 15gal refugium with a 4in. fine sand bed and some live rock and cheato. For stock, we've got a Pearlscale Butterfly, filefish, Bar Goby, and a clownfish. Several kinds of mushrooms, a colt frag, a mystery softie, some zoos and palys. Everything is lit with 260 watts of PC. Looking eagerly to pumping you all for answers to the many questions I've got. AC

Hi,
My name is Justin, and I am currently a student at the University of North Dakota. I decided to get a 15 gallon tall salt water fish tank to put on my desk. I'm pretty new to saltwater fish, but I have been able to keep mine alive for about 2 months now.
I've got 2 Ocellaris clowns, a six lined wrasse, a red scooter dragonet, two yellow tail damselfish, a chromis, a yellow clown goby, a talbot damselfish, an arrow crab, an emerald crab, and a bunch of snails.
Any suggestions for future purchases are more than welcome. I would love to get an urchin soon!
Thanks
Justin

Hi, my name is Brien, I am brand new to the saltwater world. I have two fresh water tanks but was no longer satisfied with the selection of fish I was able to have. Salt water has more beautiful and fascinating specimens that have spiked my curiousity. I am slowly building my first salt water tank. 35g hex tank; 65g rated skimmer, 10000k lighting system, about 15 pounds of live rock now (I understand that I should have atleast a 1lb per g). In the tank there is a valentini puffer, a blue damsel, a green emerald crab (if the puffer hasnt eaten him) a few snails (same as crab) a sand sifting star fish, a chocolate chip star fish, and umbrella coral, and another spiecies of crab

Hey gang, I'm more of a lurker, but felt like I should at least say hi.

Hi all...

Hi all...

I'm getting back in to the hobby after 8 years out.
I do have to keep things on a tight budget, so I'm re-using/re-building used equipment, lots of questions will come up I'm sure, like should I not only re-polish a used Plexiglas tank, but should I go over the joints with adhesive (acetone) and treat it as a "œground up" rebuild?
I'd like to do it right the first time and if I need to wait a few days / week for the solvent to cure, ok, no problem.
I plan on running a sump like last time, but this time I'll have the skimmer in the sump.
I hope to have some progress in the next few weeks.

A
