If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hey ReefCentral!!

I am completely new to this hobby. My brother is going to be giving me a 30 gal tank to get everything started. As I have never had a tank of any kind before, I think I might just get a 10 gal freshwater all-in-one setup for like $40 bucks from Petco just so I can dip my feet in the fish business.

Do you think I should get this experience first before diving into a full salt tank with all the extra goodies?

New to Reef Central

My name is Michelle. I had a 55gal FOWLR tank over 10 years ago. I now have a 30gal cube. This one has been up for a little over a year. I am wanting to get an anemone for my mated pair of Percs. This will be my first venture into anemones. I have been reading and reading. I just got a protein skimmer and still trying to get it right. Next will come the lights.

Thanks for all the wonderful info on this site.

Hello, all! My name is TJ.

I am new to salt water and intend to go with a reef with softies.

So far, I have an empty46 bowfront and a place to put it.

No lights, no filter, no powerheads, no rock, no sand. Yet.

I did however, just order a RO DI filter as my son is going to also be setting up a reef in a 26 bowfront.

My son in law is a member here and told me this was the place to get info.

INFO is what I need as I am pretty confused as to what my next steps and purchases should be. I was going to set up a GARF "Bullet-Proof Reef" until I started reading here, and am now doubting the wisdom of going that direction.

I do plan to make a lot of my rock myself, and hope to keep external equipment to a minimum.

Hopefully I can wade through the awesome information here in the next week to formulate a plan of action.

Hello everyone, new here to Rc and can't wait to learn alot more about keeping up on Reef and Fish. Looks to be an awsome site with alot of knowledge.:celeb1:

Hello all,
I live in Delaware, and just converted my 300g from fresh to salt. I was dreading it because ou startup costs. I'm in wk 5, and my levels are good. I have 300lbs of Fiji live rock, 150lbs of crushed coral, Proclear Pro 300 wet/dry filter w/ skimmer, and 72" 4 bulb lighting. I've converted because I love the colors and varieties that saltwater has to offer. I'm looking forward to discussions thanks all!

Hello, I'm new to the reef world. Just purchased a Fluval Edge tank today. It looked like a good balance between small and just big enough to have at least two clown fish. I've just finished putting in my live sand on the bottom and put about 4lbs I'm guessing of Caribbean coral on top of that, that I purchased at Petsmart. I've also added 5 gallons of distilled water mixed with the salt mixture they sold there as well. i just added my live rock today that i got from a LFS.
it has lots of purple Coralline algae on it. i added about 7 lbs of rock made up of 3 big pieces.

I also have a 2.5 gallon tank that I'm thinking about making a refugium out of, to use in conjunction with the Fluval. Not quite sure yet how to go about that, but I will learn.

I hope that I am off to a good start. I know there is a ton of reading I must do also.

This is fun and relaxing too I must admit!!!!

Zach

Hi everyone; I've been lurker on this site for a couple months now and it has been extremely helpful.

I have a 100g reef tank, that is just over a year old. Multiple types of coral, lots of cleaners. The fish so far consist of a Blenny, Gobi, Tang, and Clown

G'Day all

I found out about this place after being on and joining up with masa and seeing links posted to here

so I have been lurking about for a while, though I would start to join in on the fun

been getting back in to the aquarium world after being out of it for a few years after an having one of my tanks leek over the lounge room

reading about here for a while, wow a fair bit seems to have changed or there are things I was just not aware of or been told by LFS's

so I have a lot of questions, but i have been looking about here for a lot of the answers, ( problem my to buy list has gone up big time)
things like Refugium's pumps with controllers, ( Tunze not sure what one to get there ) deep sand beds ( in DT ) or sump, moon lighting ect. RO water v NSW v Tap ( like I use now ) + lots more.

tank wise I have a 4x2x2 Fresh water tropical tank that is a community tank, the little marine tank is an aquaone 620 nice little tank
the big marine tank is a 4x2x2 that one i am repairing , going to sand back the stand and re-stain it, re-silicon the tank and run test for a while out side before bringing it back in side needs a big clean up though.
i also have a 2foot cube tank that is at the inlaws house, that I hope to set up with a sump to keep a Lion Fish in it

going to take our time re-setting it up as i want to do it right

out side of aquariums I am quite involved in the shooting sports and hunting, that is been taking up a lot of my time and one of the reasons Fish was put on the back burner, however think I will be broke a bit longer as both seem to be as expensive , also been getting in to Home Brew a fair bit as well and have had a bit of success with that ( won in a category in a competition a while earlier this year )

one of the main reasons for getting back in to it is my daughter asked if we can get them set up so she can have some fish, she is really liking watching them swim about in the fresh water tank so I can not wait to get the big one set up for her,

New to the forum. So much info. Had a saltwater setup 15 years ago. Boy have things evolved. Thanks to my 7 year old wanting a Nemo fish. I am getting back into the hobby.

Hello Forum. I'm just getting started in salt and came to this forum to troll for a while and try to learn from all the info on here. I had full intentions of becoming more knowledgeable before going out and buying equipment, however finding somebody local that has a great deal on a tank setup has changed my plans lol.

I'll be starting out with a 180g with a 75 gal sump. I'm planning on creating a mixed reef with mostly coral and just a few fishes. Hoping i'm not getting in over my head as the last aquarium experiences i had were about 10 years ago and that was with fresh water. Time will tell :-)

Hello RC. I am a Petco employee in League City, TX. I've been in the hobby for 3 years as a result of being hired for the Aquatic Care position. Before that, I didnt know a thing. After I got hired I researched as much as I could and got the rest of my knowledge from talking to local hobbyists. It only took 1.5 years to get my first tank, and now I'm up to 3 (55G Salt/Reef, 6G Salt Pico FOWLR, 20G (long) Fresh, planted). I'll check here more often, but I mostly used my local club's website MARSH Reef, but since this forum utilizes Tapatalk, I will be here quite a bit on my break :)

Hi

Hi

Hi I am new to the forum My name is Robert. I have been lerking here for a few months and finally decided to join. I am going to be getting my first sw aquarium soon (wife permitting :fun2:) I have been trying to figure out what would be the best way to start. nano tank or large... I have heard that bigger tanks are easier to take care of. Besides a 180 or 200 gallon is just beautiful to look at...... What do you guys think is better for a beginner?

Hello, new to the forums. I have a 45 frag and 46 bowfront. There is a great wealth of information here, look forward to using it all. Welcome to all before and after my post.

Hey! My name is DeeJay, 26, live in southern Ohio. I currently have a 55 gallon soft coral tank with 3 black/white stripped damsels and a powder brown. Before the tang police start I am currently trying to purchase a much bigger tank, 150+. Trying to view one in the classifieds I was told about but I can't view it!! I've had my tank setup for about 4 months. I had a 75 gallon a few years ago and moved and had to be taken down. I also have a 30 gallon fresh water with angels.

My name is jesse i have a 48 gal reef tank thats been running for about a year. I also have a 110 gal rimlees that i am setting up soon. I have used my 48 gal as my learing tank i used it for fresh water for years and now a reef for about a year. I am planning on setting up the 110 gal with a 30 gal sump and 20 gal refugium. I am now trying to decide on lighting either t5's or led's. One of my lfs guys said that led's are as good as the hype. If anyone who has used led's have any info on info on them i would appreciate it. I am planning on a mixed tank lps, sps, leathers and clams. That is what i have in my 48 now. Thanks for any input!
