Finally joined today. I have a 125 reef tank setup now came over from freshwater about 8 months ago. So far so good. Learning a lot. Have a refugium setup on the tank and I have used this board in the past for information.
Hello, I'm Mike and this is my first time posting in a forum so please forgive me if i'm not doing this correctly. I started a saltwater aquarium last year but it was a disaster due to bad advice from LFS (which is out of business now lol!!). I have a 55 gallon tank and the setup before was 5 pounds of live rock, about a inch of live sand and a canister filter with just the floss in it, now that I did tons of research after losing $200 bucks of fish I have corrected my mistakes from the advice I received. the new setup is 5 pounds of live rock from previous attempt, 50 pounds of macro rock, canister (with floss, carbon, and ceramic rings), 2 powerheads, protein skimmer, and a ro/di unit. The tank was up for 3 weeks and I was feeding the tank ground up mysis shrimp for the cycling process and when I tested at the end of the three weeks All levels where at 0 and then I introduced my fish. I added a tomato clown and a yellow tang and there where already a peppermint shrimp and three hermit crabs (from the previous attempt that had survived the cycling) and ammonia started to spike a little (0.25) and no signs of nitrite or nitrates. To make a long story short, after talking to a owner of a small fish store near by I was told to use Seachem's Stability to aid the tank and I dosed the tank and on the third day of dosing my ammonia level was at 0 and on day 5 after doing my bi weekly maintenance (15% water change) my ammonia spiked back to 0.25 and now its day 6 of dosing with Stability and it's still holding at 0.25 with everything else at 0. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

HI everyone! Been enjoying RC for the past few months and now time to introduce myself. I setup my first SW tank in 1991 while working at a LFS that provided alot of guidance to me. What a fulfilling hobby! I had several different tanks over the years but I admit it has been a while! Currently, I have a 29G FS tank with some angels that I love but am planning to dive back into SW again. I'm so astonished to see how much has changed from the days of wet-dry filtration, damselfish tank cycling, Moorish Idols, and corals being nearly impossible to sustain! I'm impressed to see how far the hobby has come.
Working on a dream tank of at least 180G inwall with basement sump, but in the meantime will be looking for a small system.

Hi. Name is Jon, I've been an aquarist for more than fifteen years, but am just now starting into saltwater.
My current tanks are 75g, 55g, 40g, and 6x10g. All freshwater If anyone reads this I'll be surprised! with Livestock.
Moving to Salt, I have a 75g with a 20g sump.
I don't have any marine live stock yet, and don't plan on getting any until I have both a well-started tank and a much better idea on how to take care of them.

Never did a salt water tank before, I do know that using 3x 40 wat lights isnt going to be enough (what it came with)
Salt water tank was a custom make all acrylic tank, I paid very little for everything it came with, I think it was only used for a basic salt water fish tank, the lighting is very poor for live rock and they didnt have any skimmer inside the sump.
I replaced all the plumming and checked for any leeks, all is good.
The tank came with over 200 pounds of dead coral and crushed calsite, I first put in all of the 200 pounds of coral but after looking at it, it just looks like a pile of stuff in a tank..
I will say this... Fresh water tanks are easy to learn, but I know nothing about a salt water tanks, I got this tank because of the deal that was made, I couldnt pass it up. So now I need to see about getting a skimmer / useable lighing for live rock and some sand with out going broke.

Hey all! Another new guy on RC. This site is great. I've been a member here for a few years now, but never really introduced myself. I started up a 55g long SW tank w/ a 10g sump, and hang on back refugium for chaeto. It's been up and running nearly 2 years now with some MAJOR ups and down and learning experiences. I think after 2 years I may finally have a pretty good understanding of the water chemistry, after some recent muff ups.
A busy fall semester at school got my tank a little neglected....not really any water changes, and was dosing a little iodine about once a week and some trace elements along with the normal calcium, magnesium....but somehow I didn't realize the importance of the alkalinity until the last few weeks. I currently have some green, orange, and brown zoas, some yellow polyps, green clove polyps, green maze brain coral, a couple miscellaneous mushrooms. AS for fish, I have 2 yellow tail damsels, 1 blackbar chromis, 1 yellow watchman goby/tiger pistol shrimp, and a sally lightfoot crab.
As you can imagine without dosing any alk, and dozing some iodine and other harmful things in bad amounts/hardly testing ever, I ran into a few problems. I lost a coral banded shrimp, and the zoas were receding especially bad. I think my ALK was at a dismal number around 2 or a tad lower even with too much iodine. I'm due for an ALK test later today, but the level is probably around 2.8-3.0 right now, so it's getting better, and i've done about 4 20% water changes over the last couple weeks.
I will have to post pictures and start a thread, as this is probably a good learning experience which can help other newbies learn to test often, keep good records of your tests, and to research the importance and thoughts from other reefers on water parameter items and dosing procedures.
I'm about to graduate with an accounting degree....funny how I'm in the field which focuses on budgets and such, yet this hobby has no end to the spending, haha. Absolutely love this hobby and can't wait to finish the tank recovery and get everything consistent with the tank.

Not yet finished, everythings is controlled by Arduino Mega, hardware parts is about to be OK but I have to finished software.

Hi all! my name is Darryl from Canada and I am glad to join the best and most educated saltwater forum in the world! - "Reef Central". Currently I have had a 120g tank going for the last year with mostly fish with a wee bit of coral. I decided shortly after the 120 gallon was set up that I should of went with a 6 ft 180g like I originally planned but jammed out being my first salt tank. I am now in the middle of my 180g build and will post lots of build pics!

I've found a brand new Marineland 75 gallon corner flow aquarium and the complete setup for a sump on craigslist for a pretty good price. For about the last year I've been reading "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" and "The Reef Aquarium", and maybe snooping around a few forums. At the moment I have so much information floating around in my head that I'm not sure which way is up! But I'm planning on taking my time and doing this the right way...hopefully you folks can help me figure it out.
I look forward to meeting all of you,
