If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Welcome to Reef Central Joe!
Sorry to hear about your original tank.
Your new one sounds good, can't wait to see how it progresses.

Hello everyone

Hello everyone

I just joined RC and would like to take this opportunity to say hello and give a little background. Ive owned just about every kind of pet you can think of. Ive had various salt and reef set ups, but had gotten out of the hobby for a couple of years. In that time i focused more on my other interest, reptiles. I had a side business breeding some high end reps and eventually had to sell off due to time. Now i have some extra time and really miss having a reef.
I'm currently trying to decide on a new build, I've gone back and forth from getting a all i one to take the thinking out of set up, but am leaning towards a 45 gallon cube run through a refugium.
If anyone has suggestions or input please feel free. If theirs any members that would like to help me plot the build out, i'd be very grateful! Some stuff is coming back to me, but as far as newer better products I'm a little behind. I also could use some help with a sump and plumbing layout. anyone with some time please feel free to message me.
Thanks
Steve

Hi Everyone!! First I want to say thank you for all of your informative posts, I have learned SOOOOOO much from y'all!

I have been researching setting up my reef tank on and off for about 3 years. Was going to get started about a year and half ago, had almost everything I needed but life got in the way and I was overwhelmed by all that I did not know, so I put it off until I was ready and that time is now!

I currently have a 92 (ish) gallon corner bow front tank freshly up and pumping with the following with the so far:

RO/DI Water - I have a unit set-up in my garage which works well in Florida, no pre-heating required, Yay!
30 gallon sump - I wanted bigger but had to settle due to the space limitations of the corner stand.
100lbs Aragonite Sand - 40 of which was live, but I only bought it for the color and don't expect much life out of it. Sand bed is about 2.5".
70 lbs dead rock (going tomorrow to pick up 40 or so lbs of LR)
Coralife Super Skimmer 125 - May be upgrading this very soon, I bought it on a whim and have heard mixed reviews since.

It has been running for about a week with the sand and some of the dead rock. Wanted to make sure everything was still in good order before adding LR.

While the tank cycles I will be buying, or at least looking into buying:

Hang-on Sump Refugium - Since there is no room in my sump, or space to hang on the back of the tank.
PAR38 LEDs - Any advice on these will be greatly appreciated. There isn't too much opinion out on the web for these that I can find but I think they will be the best option for my corner tank since I can suspend up to 4 of them from the ceiling using everyday pendant fixtures.

My partner and I are brand new to the hobby. We are looking to get a 75g reef ready. My buddy suggested this site and it has loads of information. We are very excited to get this going.

New to Reefs...sort of

New to Reefs...sort of

I'm new to Reef central, and sort of new to reefs, I have a lot of experience in salt water, but never built my own reef tank. I've taken quite a few years off from salt but am ready to make my return :spin1: Hopefully I will be starting a reef tank soon, I'm in the planning stages currently.

Hey,

New to the forum and new to reefs. Still have a 75G FOWLR that I will be moving to a reef / mixed reef as soon as I get my 120G reef and stand cleaned up. Looking forward to contributing here and documenting my build soon.

Hi Steve, the folks in the 'reef discussion' section or the diy section will be able to help you plot it out.

Careful of the par38. I bought one too, and it started bleaching my trachyphyllia immediately. It put out ALOT of light. Too much really, for my kind of tank.

Haven't posted much but have been reading and researching RC for over a year now. Thanks for everyone's help on getting my 125 mixed reef up and going.

Oh wow. I will proceed with caution. Thanks for the heads up! I will start with the pendant lights high above the tank and lower them slowly until I get to the right level.

Newbie checking in.....looking to dive into a salt tank soon. Great info here, thanks! It looks like I have a TON of reading to do.......

Hello

Hello

Hi there
I'm new to the site and wanted to say hello. I started my first reef tank almost 5 years ago. It was a nano cube 24g with just a couple of fish and mostly softies. After two years it was time to upgrade. I went for a 75g tank that has mostly LPS and zooas. For filtration a have a custom sump/fuge a HOB reef octopus skimmer and a TLF reactor. Lighting is LED dimmable with 30 3 watt whites and the same for blue.
I'll look forward to contribute and learn form the forum.
Thanks

Hi everyone, i am new to saltwater i've been keeping freshwater for more than 3 years now so i decided to take a step further and start a saltwater tank. I've been researching a lot about saltwater and i still think i need a lot of help to start one.

I went to a pet shop and purchased a 29 gallon tank similar to the nano cube with built in filter but i think this tank is for freshwater. i also got some artificial corals. so now i need some help to start the cycle of this tank.

I have some questions

1. Since the tank is 29 gallons and fish only can i go without a protein skimmer?
2. If i choose to go without a protein skimmer can i do 25% water change every month?
3. How do i start the cycle? can i purchase the salt put ro water and live sand at the same time. Should i also put in 30 pounds of live rock at the same time?
4. Would normal Quick Dips work to test the water parameters?
5. I have a maxi jet 1200. Is it way to much for the 30 gallon tank?
6. Last but not least how long should i cycle the tank for and what kind of equipment should i put in the tank and what kind of fish should i introduce first?
7. Do i need a water conditioner for the ro water?

Thanks

Hello everyone, my name is Anne, I'm 15, live in Utah, and have a 65 gallon reef. I started out in the hobby over a year ago and am on my 3rd tank right now. My first tank was a 28 gallon nano cube with a pair of oscellaris clownfish and some random soft corals, all of which have been moved to my RedSea Max 250 (65 gallons). After taking down my nano cube and getting rid of it I raised a dwarf octopus in a 20 long for about 4 months until she died after laying eggs two months ago.

I'm glad to be a member here and am looking forward to contributing to the hobby and receiving help from all of you here!

Hello Everyone,

I am new here also. I live in Utah and have had a fresh water tank for about 5 years when I took the leap and switched over to SW I have had my system up and running for about 10 months now and I have had very few problems.

My tank is a Mixed reef 75gallon display with 6 54w T5's. I have a 30 gallon sump with about half as a fuge. I just got a Neptune Apex (and is cooler than my first bike) last week and the new users guide that you have is great!!
I am thinking of upgrading my 75 to a 220 with in the next year so lots of research to be done.
