If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello everyone,

I currently have a 29gallon fresh water tank. Been running it for the past few years, but for the last few weeks i've been really into salt water reef tanks. Been looking on here for info and decided that i will be making a change in a matter of a few weeks. Just wanted to say hi to everyone.

Lighting advice

I recently purchased 155 drilled tank. I added 220lbs live sand and 150lbs live rock. I seem to get multiple opinions on lighting. As this one of the more expensive purchases for a tank. I really want to mae the right choice. I really want to be able to grow live coral. What should I get and where is the best place to get it

Hey all! Just decided to jump into saltwater. Had a few fresh over the years and picked up a used bc29 to set up. Hoping it turns out well. Lots of good info here.

My lil bro and I are starting up a 46 bowfront FOWLR. Almost got everything we need. RO/DI is being shipped and bought some aragonite the other day. Trying to get some cheaper base rock and then ile start curing and then cycling. Might re-silicone the inside since we got it off craigslist but it held water even with the seams lifting during a leak test.

Hi There!

We are a husband and Wife (Taz and Tee) so may be either one of us as well (read an above hus/wife user as well).

We have been freshwater fishkeeping for a few years now (2 29g tanks) and about 6 months ago finally started up a reef tank!

Our rock is producing like crazy and we excited as we have started adding coral (Kenya, blue mushrooms and candy coral...and asst little frags) and fish about a month ago.

We researched a lot before getting started but are still realizing how much we didn't know!! :hmm2:

Have been getting tons of info from this board over the months so thought it was about time to join!

:wavehand:

Also wanted to say I've lurked around on here the last few days and love this site! Very good information. I'm also new to SW, and have had my tank about 5 months. I've had FW fish a couple years. I want to say to the previous poster, that I went to college at ISU in Normal! How is Normal these days? I graduated back in 1983

Glad to join the site :)

Bloomington-Normal and ISU are all doing great! Growing by leaps and bounds, new football stadium and the arts dept is expanding in the near future. Small world!

I'm new to the forum and new to reefing. Last 2 weeks I have experienced my first losses since I have set up my tank. Kinda suck but losses are to be expected I guess. I am already looking to get a bigger tank and have tons of questions.

Hello, my name is Carlos. I never had a fish tank, but I'm planning on getting one next month. Hoping to to set it up and then I will begin searching for a peacock mantis shrimp. =]

Trying to absorb all the information that In can and need, from you guys. Very informative forum.

new to the hobby

new to the hobby

Hi I'm Lauren and I'm very new to this hobby. I started a reef tank last month. Its a 6 gallon fluval edge. I have live sand, four live rocks, a starfish, a watchman goby, two clownfish and a pink skunk clownfish. The pink skunk hosts with my sabae anemone. I know I have a lot going on in such a small tank so I added extra led lights and a top fin powerhead 30. Most of my parameters are in a good range except for my ph. Its low at 7.8. I bought instant ocean sea buffer and have been slowly adding it to the water but the ph doesn't seem to be rising at all. Is there a specific way I should be adding it that would be more effective? I simply mix it with tank water in a cup and pour the mixture back in. Any guidance u guys have is greatly appreciated!

Hey all Mark here been in the hobby awhile lurking in the shadows on this site I was a member of sdreefs awhile ago since than I have sold all my tanks and moved to TN had a house burn down bought a new one and thought I need a new tank. I bought a 20 tall had it two weeks and got a 120 the 20 wasn't big enough lol I'm getting ready to start on it build thread soon to come thanks for all the great info on this site

Hello My name is Miguel, I'm new to this forum and to this Hobby, I have lots of question and probably most of you can help me out or at least point me to the right directions... I've been researching for the past weeks about tanks and found the RSM which is a plug n play system, I was wondering what do you think of them, is it worth buying an used RSM system? would you go for the 130D or 250?

Thanks a lot

hi, My name is shastri and im from NYC, i finally decided to get ride of my 29 FOWLR after 3 years and upgrade to a 75G softies, i would love to hear everyone's advice and also if anybody has unused stuff i can buy off 2nd hand, my budget is not as high as my passion but i will find a way! thanks! i need a75g tank with side overflow or none at all. or anything else!

Hi all, name is Matt. I knew nothing about a reef tank, until about 6 weeks ago when my wife, who hadn't had a tank in 20 years, decided we were buying an established tank and moving it 60 miles. Shockingly, we got it home, put the base rock in, set everything up and fired it up. We let it cycle for about 18 hours then added all of the live rock and fish that were in it prior to move, added the rest of the water and everything survived! Since then, the learning curve has been steep for me. Found this forum and am grateful for the tons of information posted here. Lots of questions forth-coming....

hello all,

I would really like some help from you experienced salter water keepers, I have just set up a 31 litre tank i am on week 3 of my cycle i added about 2 kgs of live rock last week i brought a testing kit today API SALTWATER MASTER TEST KIT just wanted to put my results on here to see if its cycling ok

P.H: 8.0
AMMONIA: 0.50
NITRITE: 0
NITRATE: 40

does everything seem to be ok? also have i got enough live rock my LFS said that should be enough but ive been doing alot of reading and i dont think it is any advice

thanks very much

Your nitrates are a bit high, still a fish safe number but they should be much lower. Its not really how many pounds or Kgs of rock you have its how poreous it is. The more place for algae and beneficial bacteria to grow the better. Are the shells just for decoration? Maybe try some small peices of live rock rubble instead. Hope all works out for you. A few more weeks of cycling and you should be ready for fish. Just be careful how many you add at one time. Too many too soon can throw off your bacteria balance. As I have learned the hard way, slow and steady is the best for this hobby.
Good Luck!

Hi all, ... completely new to Marine tanks, been raising and breeding FW fish(mostly cichlids) for over 25 yrs, and have always been interested in salt water aquariums. I've learned to do all the research I can before I start a new hobby, and I hope to get the knowledge I need from you guys to make this a long and enjoyable hobby... looking forward to the addiction...lol.
