If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi folks -
My name is Amy. I live in the Chicago area.

I'm new to reefkeeping but have been keeping freshwater aquariums for more than 15 years. I previously lived in the Boston area where I was very active in the freshwater hobby, even was the president of the BAS many years ago.

Anyway, after seeing my brother's 75 mixed reef setup I decided that I was ready to take the plunge myself and bought a Marineland 60 cube which is exactly the right footprint for my current rental.

I'm in the process of getting the equipment together and plan on going with the following:

sump... still contemplating going DIY but might call for a custom build from nano sea creations. Would like to be able to have a small fuge in there if possible.

Skimmer - Probably the INS80 from Reef Dynamics (bro recommended them)
Thinking of going with a Sicce Syncra 1.5 pump for the return (I like the threaded outlet - looks almost foolproof)
Lights - planning on going with 2 x 24" Ecoxotic Panorama Marine LED (I have 1 fixture already, bought last year when it was on sale cheap)
Powerheads - Going with at least 1 Hydor Koralia (600 GPH) - going to see how much flow I get on the return + the powerhead.
Controller: Digital Aquatics Reefkeeper Lite
Heater - TBD... something that isn't as likely to shatter or get stuck "ON" after a month. The "heater fail" potential is my primary reason for wanting to invest in a controller.

I've already purchased an RO/DI system.

I started researching this project last year. My original thoughts were that I would do a smaller "nano" tank but after talking to more than a few experienced reefkeepers, and hearing my brother's voice ask "are you SURE you want to go nano?" too many times I decided to spring for a bigger tank that would be easier to keep healthy, and of course, allow me to keep a few more fish.

Thinking I'll start with some frogspawn and torch corals, and an anemone with a pair clownfish. I'm already reading up on aggressive species, and who plays well with others (and who does not). It was so much easier in the freshwater hobby (I used to breed South American and African cichlids so I know too well what happens to a tank when you get the dynamic "wrong").

One of my thoughts around having a fuge was that someday I'd like to be able to keep a mandarin goby, but I wouldn't want to do it unless I had plenty of food around.

Anyway, I plan on starting small and get the tank stable and healthy first. Get my maintenance routine down and grow the tank slowly.

Looking forward to learning as much as I can and avoiding typical "newbie" mistakes as much as possible.

Hi, I'm still reading and learning. I'm still putting my tank together. So far I have a 90g tank, sump, skimmer and 1 kessil A60w light. I'm trying to learn as much as I can.

Hello everyone, my name is JT and I am new to the hobby. I have a 120g tank I got from my dad who decided he was done since he is in his 70's. I am in the middle of the first cycle and thought joining would help minimize some beginner mistakes.

I'm new to posting on this forum but figured I might as well say hello from Texas! I currently run a 185g DSA that I've converted to a peninsula style.

Hey everyone, new to the hobby building a 40g reef still at the moment over in Australia. I have decided to go a narrow internal C2C overflow which drains to an external overflow with 3 standpipes to a 20g sump. Just finishing my plumbing this weekend on the tank! Hopefully post some pics soon.
Cheers
Dean

Intro

Hello, I have been lurking here for quite awhile and figured it was time to introduce myself. My name is Troy and I just set up a 90 gallon with a built in overflow, 40 gallon sump. I will try and keep the stupid questions to a minimum but I am sure a few will slip out.

Hello all, my name is Ken and I am new to RC. I live in Corona, CA and am diving back into the hobby. I had a reef tank in the mid 90"s, but a lot has changed technologically speaking. I am in the planning stages at the current time and this is what I have decided on, thus far. (Keep in mind that in the 90's I had a 55 gallon HOB and now I am moving towards a sump/fuge setup, so may as well be new to the hobby)

I plan on keeping mixed corals, clean-up crew, clams, amemones and fish

90 gallon acrylic (48 x 18 x 24) (Will come undrilled)
EcoSystem 3012 (30 x 12 x 16) sump/refugium with miracle mud, caulerpa and bioballs
ASM G1, in sump, protein skimmer (suggestions appreciated)

I will have to drill and install an overflow box and drain and return plumbing myself (daunting, because although I am pretty handy, I have never done it before)
I was hoping to get some suggestions on type and placement of overflow box to run this system and the EcoSystem 3012 suggested 800-1000 gph as far as the return pump so I would appreciate any suggestions or comments regarding type and gph for return pump. I will also be running a dual gfo and carbon reactor.

I will more than likely add a Reefkeeper Elite to run the system, a Tunze Osmolator ATO and probably some type of system to add Kalkwasser to the ATO. Not really sure about how I am going to go with the lighting yet, suggestions or comments will be appreciated. Once I get everything that will be used hope to be doing a build thread.

Thank you in advance for any help I can get with this project.

hi, my name is Brandon, I am from Lincoln, NE and brand new to the hobby. I have a 55gal set up with 60lbs of rock , Picasso triggerfish and a yellow head morey eel, few damsels crabs shimp and star fish. trying to figure it all out, already off to a rocky start tho (ich) :/ .. I hope to learn a lot from this site!

Hi everyone, my name is Matt and I'm from NJ. I am a college student and currently off for the summer... woot woot. I have been looking for a hobby for about 2 months now since my sport is over. I am very interested in being an aquarium enthusiast. I have had fish before but I was only a small child and knew nothing about it. Now, I am ready to take on the challenge of owning a Saltwater aquarium. I currently do not own a tank but I am looking into a 65-75 gallon with 48x18x? dimensions (the height isn't too important to me). Any advice would be great, I've been doing my research for about a month bought a book and all so I'm pretty excited. Nice to meet you all!

What is this??

What is this??

Hey everyone! I just set up my first saltwater tank and this is my first post. I have already used alot of ya'll's info in my research and decision to go salt!
I set up my tank 2 days ago and I had a few hitchhikers on my rock. Some known (3 hermits, 3 tiny starfish) and 1 I don't know what it is. If anyone does, please let me know if I should leave it or get rid of it.

Thanks

New to the forum and the hobby

Hi everyone my name is Trisha, and I'm looking to get started with a salt water fish tank. I've always been interested in a fish tank like these. So I'm guess I'm here to learn all I can about keeping one. I haven't yet purchased a tank yet, but I've been told to do all my research before going out and buying everything. So I guess that's what I'm trying to do. :fun2:I'm really excited to learn all I can here.

Hello everyone. New to saltwater hobby. But have been keeping a fresh water tank for years all types from simple guppy tanks to full high tech co2 injecting planted tanks. I recently started a 20 long nano reef and I'm hooked. I know what everyone says about not starting small but I have no regrets and my tank is thriving. I have been making videos on YouTube if anyone wants to check em out. The name on there is the same as this one. Thanks for all the wealth of information u guys share on here!

I'm also new to salt water, though I have always dreamed about a big salt water tank. I've done freshwater for several years and recently emptied out my 55 gallon planted tank and decided to finally give saltwater a go.

My tank is probably about 75% cycled so far and I'm fighting the urges to start adding fish lo.

I'm new too! And I have a question (first of many I'm sure)

I'm new too! And I have a question (first of many I'm sure)

Hi guys, I'm also new to this community. I signed up a while ago then got distracted with other things...Damn I wish I'da consulted this forum first before making some dumb moves! What a great amount of useful information!

So I started with a 55gal FOWLR, which was running great, but then I realized that my purple tang would eventually outgrow the tank. So I found a 123 gal acrylic "reef ready". I followed the instructions given by my LFS, putting in a new sand bed, using the old water from the tank, some of the old live rock, and adding a considerable amount of new live rock.

Sadly, about a week into the new tank it cycled and even with several large water changes, my poor tang didn't make it. Nor did two of my scissor fish gobies, firefish, tail spot blenny, and several snails. Big bummer :sad1:

Anyhow now I'm up and running with the new tank, and a pretty badass custom built stand (only demand of the wife - it had to look like "real" furniture. The furniture builder did an amazing job, only didn't seal the compartment with a protective enough sealant, therefore I had to take the sump out two days ago for the stand builder to put a better sealant on the compartment. :headwallblue:

So the rock and chaeto in the sump has been in buckets with light and moving water. I left the small sandbed in the refugium covered in a small amount of saltwater, and now I'm wondering how long I can get away with that without having to rinse it? It'll probably be about 36-40 hours by the time the sealant is all set and I can get the sump up and running again.

Thoughts?

Hello all, from North Texas!

I worked in an aquarium shop in high school (many, many years ago) and have always had an interest in aquatic life. For the most part I've stuck to fresh water, particularly cichlids.

I'm looking at putting a tank in my living room now and am seriously considering a saltwater setup. There seems to be lots of deals on Craigslist from those that have either tried and failed, possibly outgrown their setup, or are moving. This seems like a great way to get into it - at least save some money.

I know from other hobbies, however, that finding a good forum can also help and I'm currently reading through all the newbie/startup posts.

Looking forward to meeting some of you fine folks.

Hey everyone! Just thought I'd stop by and introduce myself! My name is Mitch, I'm 25 years old and I'm still relatively new to the hobby. I've been reefing for about 2.5 years. Started off with a 20G with 2 clowns and exactly one year ago, acquired my present 50G setup! I'm super happy with the current results, the tank has been flourishing for quite some time now. I know I've still got a long ways to go but I look forward to learning as much as I possibly can, along with sharing my personal experiences with all of you. Here's to reefing!

hey guys,
I have always wanted to get a salt water tank with live plants and rocks. I have had a fresh water one for years and finally have some $$ to go salty. I was looking at the nano cubes at the pet store, the employee told me they have everything you need. Do you guys have any suggestions as to a brand of tank or size?
Thanks guys, and I'am glad to have found RC! pat

The larger the tank the more forgiving of mistakes.
All you really need are good lights, cured live rock, and patience. It's a totally different world from freshwater.
