If you've successfully kept a Kole Yellow-Eyed tang through QT...

Sorry, correction necessary. The pH had dropped to 7.4 this morning. It is now 7.8, after a partial water change earlier today.

The tang is still in the same corner of the tank this morning. I added an ammonia badge to the tank (shows ok), and I have another 5g water change ready to go, when needed.

I put a glob of Instant Ocean Seaweed Blend (w/algae) in the tank, and came back a little while later. I saw hardly any drifting around, so it may have been mostly eaten. I am soaking some mysis in Selcon now.

It must be hard for the fish to be holed up in one corner of the tank. The light current in the tank brings all the food to it, so it really has no incentive to come out of "hiding."

I was able to see a lesion, or injury of some sort, just forward of the tail on the left side of the fish. I wonder if this is at all common. When I finally increase the light maybe I'll be able to get a picture. :(

Did you cover the sides of the aquarium? I found mine spooked easily until I covered up the back and sides. Also, I have found that being "alone" in a QT is unnatural for some fish. I have started QT'ing 2 at a time now. This is how I QT'd my Copperband, with a wrasse. It learned to eat from the wrasse, and I think it assuages some of their timidness. 2 months in the DT and they still swim together. Good luck. I hope your Kole makes it!

Thank you for the tips, Karina. I did cover one side - the other is against a wall. I also have not introduced the Kole to bright light, yet.

Live Aquaria recommends I treat with either Maracin 2, or Pimafix, for a bacterial infection. Have you ever used either?

Can anyone recommend a way to introduce the fish to a light fixture? I don't want to stress it further, as it still isn't actively swimming around. The tank has been pretty low light to this point, but I can't really assess the fish very well. I know it has a topical issue just forward of its tail fin, but I can't tell what it might be.

I have a 2-bulb T5 fixture that is not very powerful. Should I wait a while longer, since the fish is eating anyway?

Any opinions on lights and a skittish fish in QT?

I was advised by someone at Live Aquaria to treat the QT with an antiobiotic for the tangs lesion. I can't decide on whether to use Maracyn +, or Maracyn 2. Fishing for some suggestions...

I have not dosed either of those before but as to the light issue, raise the ambient light in the room so that it illuminates the tank almost light enough to turn on the lights.. try this for a while and see how it goes, if it goes well light up the room and try one bulb of your 2 light fixture.. I think if the room is light enough he may not notice the light coming on so sudden.

Glad to hear that little guy is hanging on..

Thanks - I'm sure hoping he makes it. I'd feel a lot more confident if he didn't have that large, light-colored area on his skin. I haven't been able to see it very well, since he is SO shy (and now hides in the pvc pipe). He does dart out quickly for food, though. At least he's a little pig. Appetite is a good thing.

I think I'll try your method - first by replacing the recessed lighting bulb in the ceiling over the tank. It's supposed to be sunny here tomorrow, so I might try turning on the one blue/white bulb when the room is at its brightest. At least he'll be in the pipe!

Thanks

Not dead yet.

The KYET (like that?) is moving around the QT tank much more freely, although it hides whenever I come near. It has even been grazing at algae that is starting to grow on the glass. Appetite still seems good.

I spent the tidy sum of $20 for some Maracyn 2 at the LFS, but I am hesitant to use it when I can't get a good visual on the white patch on the fish. I've read that it could be anything from stress to ammonia burn, fungus to a wound. Maybe I'll just dose the antibiotic anyway. I just did a 25% water change in advance, and I'll remove the miniscule amount of carbon pad from the HOB filter.

Unless someone thinks I should wait...??

My Kole develops these sort of scraped-looking patches on his body whenever he's stressed, like when I add new fish to "his" tank (he has assumed the position of boss in my 185). It freaked me out at first because it looked like he had been skinned. It usually shows up around his scalpels, but can also be on other parts of his body. It goes away when he settles down.

It's a great sign that he's eating. Mine was on death's door when I finally got him to eat. Now he's a pig - easily the beefiest fish in the tank.

Robin, thank you so much for sharing that info. I had seen pictures of stress and bacterial blotches on tangs, but this looked worse to me. I still really haven't been able to see it in detail; whenever I get a chance to "spy" on the fish while he is swimming, the light is too dim to make it out. His patch is just forward of his scalpel, and it does indeed seem to appear as you describe.

I started to treat the QT with Maracyn 2 today. If this is in fact unnecessary, I sure hope it doesn't do more harm than good. Turns the water yellow, btw.

I guess there's no chance of a picture of that light area, huh? Good sign that it's eating though.

I just lost my Kole Tang this weekend. He was the coolest-nicest fish I have had. All he did was swim and peck at the rocks all day! I lost mine to a Mantis that I just got out once he killed this guy. :(

No, I really wish I could get one. He's slowly getting more confident, but still mostly hides when I get near the tank. The patch almost looks a little less pronounced today. Could be my wishful thinking.

When I was peeking through the crack in the door today while he swam around picking at the new algae on the glass and pvc, I could see that he looks surprisingly plump!

I'm really, really sorry to hear that. I think I can understand how upsetting that could be, as I'm growing attached to this fish already!

Are you going to try one again?

Great fish. Really ich resistant for tangs. Not as aggressive as other tangs. I had one for five years and fed Nori, No. 2 pellets and occasionally Prime Reef. Ate like a pig all the time!
