If you've successfully kept a Kole Yellow-Eyed tang through QT...

Have you tested your DT with your kit to be sure that it's not just registering ammonia that's not there?

I know my DT has no ammonia so I always check my QT test against that tank just to be sure.

Just curious, it sucks to do water changes when ya don't have to!

That's a really good question - thanks for pointing that out! The ammonia badge shows everything as fine...

As soon as I'm done with this water change, I'll have to check that out!

Can't seem to keep on top of this ammonia, despite doing two 25% water changes daily. My kit almost always reads .25 (or maybe worse, the shades of color for both are so close). I tested a new bucket of saltwater this morning, and the results were a notch down (0 - 0.25), so I don't think the kit is in error.

So, I am about to do ANOTHER water change now. This is getting kind of old. The fish looks fine, is bolder, is eating well, has good color, and I think the wound is beginning to heal. I am concerned that the breathing is more rapid, still, than it should be.

I would like to treat Prazipro for flukes, but I'm afraid that it will be ineffective with all the water changes I have to do. I have been watching the fish like a hawk, and sometimes I think I see a rapid head jerk that doesn't look quite right - not very often.

Iwishtofish,

IME/O, the ammonia concern appears to be an issue with your test kit, as the pic shows no signs of ammonia posioning.

Post a new pic....

Going forward, here is what I would do....

1. Do a 50 to 70% water change.
2. Run the biofilter continuously
3. Run the biofilter with carbon
4. Place one or two pieces of live rock in the tank

Run this set-up for a week allowing the tang to adjust to his new surroundings/environment. During this time, just observe the behavior of the tang.

I would then treat the tank with "General Cure" by API. This is a combination of Praziquantel & Metronidazole. This will eliminate external parasites and secondary bacterial infections. If you have Prazi & Metron separately, either treat separately at specified doses or combined at reduced levels (i.e. reduce by 50%, etc.).

After the treatment protocol, observe the tang for another week or so. I would probably do one more treatment followed by a couple of days of observation before releasing into the display (as long as no other symptom manifests).

The wound on the side looks like it is healing nice.

Good luck

Barracuda, thank you very much for all the advice. I've been running the biowheel since day 1, but I have no idea whether or not the antibiotic I was treating with would have completely killed any nitrifying bacteria. Definitely where a piece of live rock would come in handy, as soon as I remove the remaining antibiotic.

I'll have to do a better controls test with my ammonia kit. I tested a new bucket of saltwater, and got a significantly different result than when I test the QT. It was recommended that I should test my DT water - I think I'll do that tomorrow.

I will try to get another picture tomorrow, as well. I wish I could get a video...maybe I'll be able to get one with my phone. I'd like some opinions on the breathing. The wound looks even better now, I think.

Does Metronidazole have characteristics that might affect the biofilter?

hope your kole heals up nicely! They are really great fish! I didn't QT mine either but I did buy him locally and really small as well. Mine hid for a couple days and started eating everything I threw into the tank. He especially loves NLS pellets and mysis. glad yours seems to be doing well so far!

Thank you very much! Seeing the Kole in your tank was one of the motivations for my getting this fish.

Yes, they sure do like to eat, don't they? :)

Yes, they eat constantly! Glad to hear it's fat and doing well. How is it healing? He looks good in the picture (except for that bad patch). I'm a proponent of "less is more" so I would just let it alone and see if it doesn't heal up on its own. I would definitely do the water changes and run carbon but wouldn't treat anymore for now. Just work to get that ammonia out. If he is laboring in breathing my bet would be it's due to the ammonia.

I am doing another water change as I write. Soon I'll start the carbon again. His injury is looking even better, I think! :) My concern now might be gill flukes, but you're right - the breathing is likely ammonia-related.

Thanks for the advice!

Terrible pictures!

A little chunky?

Sorry I can't get better pics yet. I think things are going well (fingers crossed).

Awesome video... I love how he uses the whole tube... My clowns never leave the edge of the tube unless they are after food, they have pretty much hosted in the tube.

Yes, the tube is a good thing. He'll probably miss it when it's gone! Funny how your clowns stay in there all the time!

I did not even QT my kole and did develop a few spots on his side fins. I fed with some nori soaked in garlic and cleared up quickly. Been going strong for 3 months now. I feed a variety from spectrum pellets to frozen to nori I think variety is key.

Yup. Everything is fine until something changes in the tank (new fish, heater fails, whatever), then boom! You've got a full blown outbreak and things start dying fast.

It's sickening. People around here that repeat the QT QT QT mantra are not trying to be jerks, just trying to spare others that awful experience.

The spots may not have been ich. This section of the forum is full of posts from folks who didn't use a QT and are now paying a big price. By not using a QT, you're playing Russian Roulette and will lose sooner or later. BTW, garlic does not eliminate or prevent any parasite. This is a common myth, garlic may help a fish's immune system, but that's it.

He's going great! It's amazing how fast they can heal with a little TLC. Great work.

:)

I just ran out of IO Seaweed Blend, and just started feeding nori along with the mysis. What type of pellets do you feed? Omnivorous?

I am, for the first time, I think, getting the upper hand on ammonia. I have been doing two 5g water changes daily to try to keep it under control. With this mornings mix all ready, I decided to test, and the API kit showed yellow (lowest reading). SO, I think I'll just monitor and do just the evening water change today. :) All the antibiotic should be out of there by now. I started running floss with a tiny bit of carbon again, just to polish the water and help export the fine debris.

I bought some Omega One Super Veggie Kelp Flakes last night, because the local Petsmart didn't sell IO Seaweed Blend, nor NLS foods. The ingredients showed "natural and artificial colors." Huh? Like a fish really cares about the color.
