I'm dumb... anyone on the East side have a filter sock I could buy?

I added the sand to my tank without a pre rinse and now my water is all cloudy with soot that should have been rinsed off. I'm trying to avoid a water change since it took me a week to get 50gal of water to fill the tank. I'm hopeing a filter sock will help remove this gunk from my water?

I'm leaving for the weekend so I'm hopeing someone local in the Mentor / Madison / Chardon area has a sock I could get off them?

Thanks.

Itll clean up by the time you get back if you put a sock on it itll clog in a few hours and you will have to change it alot just let it roll and should be fine when you get back

Another option would be to use a canister filter overnight. I have a Magnum 350 and a diatom filter just for that purpose. Youre more than welcom to use it however me being so far south probably wont help you much. Maybe somebody else has on by you, but heck I might be the only person here with one.

I would still run a filter sock. I would never run a tank without one. I have one you could have im in wickliffe.

Thanks, but if the sock is going to clog its not going to do me much good since I'm going to be gone for the weekend. Should I just shut my return pump off and put the heater in the top tank and just let it settle over the weekend?

The only thing in the tank is some live rock.

When I added new sand to my tank even after I had rinsed it, it still clouded the water for a day or two! It settled down or got skimmed out and created no problems. If you have nothing in your tank it would be easy to siphon the surface of your sand after it's all settled.

Speedmonster.
I have thought about adding a sock to my drain in my sump. You seem to endorse their use, what benefits do you see and how often do you rinse yours?

Not to speak for Speed, but socks grab alot of stuff that floats around in the water so your tank will look more clean. They also grab food particles and other contaminants that help the skimmer run more efficiently, IMO.

The down side is that you need to clean them or they will build up scum, clog and can overflow so you want to make sure if they do overflow they are in an area where they overflow will back into the sump.

The socks grab allot of the debris so it can be removed, thus helping to keep the excess nutrients from my system. Some have even said it helps reduce the nitrates in their system.

Water clarity is also a major part of why I run them, by all means it is not a magic fix for anything but I use them and have had in great success. I ran a 200 micron large sock 7x14 socks so they don't clog that easy, I also keep them low in my sump so if they do get clogged they will just overflow in my sump not on my floor.

I have a super clean system I personally run a 100 micron filter sock I clean mine once a week.. Run them in the washer with cold water and bleach, air dry, then I soak them in rodi water for a day or so then air dry. I keep about 6 socks so I can rotate them.

They also can cut down on micro bubbles and some run them for that reason.

Thanks!
Thinslis: Didn't mean to hijack yor thread, just wanted to answer a question! Hope it helped you, too! Good luck with your tank!

To answer another question in this thread, leave your pump running. Everything will settle nicely in a couple of days. I like to leave particles of all sizes in the sand, including dust. I don't siphon this out. If you have a good sand sifting team it will help foster diverse fauna to have more natural sand. It won't cloud your tank unless you really dig around a lot.

Im a big advocate of carefully balanced systems, so I don't use filter socks or even protein skimming, so maybe I am a wacko.

+1 to both statements.

Ok, back from camping and the water was completely clear all was good. But after adjusting the sand so it was level and moveing some rocks around and blowing off the rocks with a turkey baster, its cloudy again. But with the skimmer running its clearing up pretty fast.
