introducing my 870gal tank (pics ahead)

Hi Ching,

no problem, thanks for asking.
But I am sorry, I am in no way a Zeovit pro or even a Zeovit user at all.
Having bright colored coral, mainly SPS in a tank IMHO means having very low nutrients, in the system.
I think that its a fine line between too many nutrients, having brown SPS-tissue and lots of algae and too low nutrients, coral tissue dying, Cyanobacteria taking over etc.
Personally I'll stay a little on the high nutrient side, slightly brown tissue and not taking the risk of getting too low.
The Zeovit system (as I understand it) creates a very, very low nutrient environment, artificial feeding coral to keep them alive etc., that's not the way I personally trust in.

As I understand, Iwan Laesser from http://www.hausriff.ch/ (wasn't there a thread somewhere around?) recently changed to Zeovit, maybe he is a better source of information.
There is also a forum http://zeovit.com that might help.

Best,
Ralf

Thanks for your answer. Ralf.
I truly agree with your opinion.

Outstanding! Amazing coral growth. Definitely my favorite reef tank. Thanks so much for the wonderful pictures of this great tank. Seeing pictures of this tank a couple years ago is what helped fuel my desire to have a reef tank of my own.

Yeah Ralf! I just sat here for an hour and read through your entire thread! I really want to see what it looks like today! It was beautiful before, I'm betting that it is gorgous today!

Thanks for staying tuned!

A quite famous gardener, called Karl Foerster once said:
"The one who is already happy with his garden, does not deserve it."

Think this is also true with reefkeeping, so I changed a lot in the last months.
I ripped out really large coral colonies (poccies, montipora and acroporas).
I did that step by step, waiting a week inbetween etc.
It could've been soooo great, but the feared cyanobakteria bloom followed.
Moving old structures, detritus etc. should be done even slower, I guess.

Currently I am fighting against the cyanos and its getting better and better.
I wasn't able to detect PO4 or NO3 in the water and only very low PO4 in the substrate.
Reading somewhere that cyano could be a sign for misplaced PO4/NO3 relation, I started to dose NaNO3 with a hosepump again. I keep the NO3 at about 5ppm in the moment.
I also increased the watermovement with two additional stream pumps.
Discussing all this with Claude Schumacher from FaunaMarin, I think that using a lot chemicals with the "Balling" method could raise the traceelement concentration in water and substrate to a really bad level.
The slightly brown coraltissue without having PO4 detectable might also be a sign for that.
I started heavy carbon-filtering, changed the substrate and stopped dosing the NaCl-free salt, which was part of my flavour of "Balling".
Coral tissue is getting more colorfull again and cyanobacteria are going away slowly.

I am not happy with what you'll see on the following pictures,
but.... you asked and it is how it is...
Things are getting better from day to day and I refuse sucking away the cyanobacteria,
to not add new traceelements with the connected waterchanges.

Thanks for asking!
Ralf

Thanks Ralf for the newest update and computer wallpaper. Your tank is still my all time favorite. I look forward to seeing more of it in the future :)

Thanks again,

mpoletti,
I put in the living rocks on Sep. 27th 2005.
Close to its 4th birthday. ;-)

Ralf

Your tank still is my favorite tank.
The whole package is so well balanced
that i can´t find anything i don´t like about it.

dammit :D

Seeing this tank triggers two thoughts in me

1) i should never try to setup a saltwater tank again for i will miserably fail against what you have achieved.

2) i should get back to the Hobby asap even if i can only come up with 10 % of that.

well i guess my wife supports option 1

This tank is so incredible. I never get tired of watching the photos in this thread.

Best tank ever.

Ralfp;
First, as said 1000 times or more , amazing tank. Fantastic.

I wonder, are you running the ultralith system from faunamarin as well? Do you still have the fuge? Is there an impact from the ultralith? If you are not running ultralith, why?

I also run the baling method from faunamarin, and the ultralith system, so I am curious about your setup.
Tim
