Iodine supplementation and anemones

Hey all,

Why am I hearing conflicting opinions on Iodine supplementation?

I have had RBTAs successfully now for about 7 years and have not once added any chemical other than 2 part solutions.

I recently heard a mention of adding iodine to help your BTA bubble up its tips. I would not know of this to be true as I have never supplemented iodine.

Please let me hear any experiences you may have had or any facts (supported by peer reviewed literature) that could support either opinion.

Thanks,

Pat

Thanks. Why do you does iodine and have you noticed any good or bad effects after doing so? I mentioned tips bubbling up as just a side note. I am interested in all pros or cons to dosing iodine which in some reefers cases a pro would be bubbling.

Thanks again.

I occasionally dose iodine, but I have found no relation between it and bubble tips.
Me either.

Iodine does help to increase zooxanthellae populations. I don't know if an increase in zooxanthellae population would cause a BTA to bubble up or not though. Maybe its worth experimenting with to find out??????

Thats exactly why I occassionally dose, because I believe it helps with zooanthellae and is useful for nem in particular. However, my BTA has never had bubble tips.

Seachem's aquavitro Vibrance is good to use with anemones....it has no toxic Iodine in it...only the good Iodide which is immediately ready for use by the inverts

I thought iodine was quickly converted into iodide when its mixed with salt water, hence the difficult testing.

I dont believe there is any correlation between Iodine/dide and bubbled tips. I beleive it has to do with feeling secure with the presence of fish. (shrug)

I have BTAs that are 8-10 years, gigantea at 15+ and another at 4+, mags at a few years, crispa and hadoni. Hvvent added a drop of iodine since 1995-96.

As for it "helping crabs/shrimp molt" some say that they are molting to rid themselves of iodine/Iodide. Especially if the molts are frequent.
