Is it a good idea to mail order fish. If I mail order an Anthias I could get it for $20 or I could go to the nearest fish store and spend $65. What im asking is when mail ordered fish arive are they healthy and is the consumer happy or is the fish covered with diesease and malnurished. Please if you have mail ordered a fish and were happy or unhappy please tell Drew about you experience.

Like most things, you get what you pay for. A good LFS (not the majority, unfortunately) will quarantine livestock for a week or two before selling...that reduces the potential risks to your tank and justifies a higher price. Plus you can see exactly what you're buying and know what it is eating.

I've never bought fish online (I have bought cleanup crew though) but I'm lucky to have two great LFSs nearby that are worth every penny of the the extra expense.

There are two reasons that I can think of for ordering fish for direct delivery. First is to save money--incidently that $20 charge you mention is probably before $30 in overnight shipping charges. To save money, though, you need to be buying several animals at once since the shipping charge for one anthias or 20 anthias is likely the same. (Some online vendors ship free for a minimum purchase--$200 - $250 is common.)

The second reason is to obtain a specimen that LFSs in your area won't bring in. Again, a good LFS will earn their 100% markup by special ordering and then quarantining for you.

Before either of those reasons comes into play, though, you need to be prepared to deal with the new arrivals. You will need to do the quarantine yourself and take the risk of receiving animals that are sick, wounded, not eating, etc. Of course, ordering in several animals means that you need to have adequate space for a sudden population increase in your both QT and eventual display tank.

All that said, some online vendors will be more reliable than others, just like different LFSs. Use the sponsor forums and vendor feedback forums here on RC to read others' experiences.

I've ordered a lot of fish online with great results.

The only reason that I buy from my local fish store is if I have something that I want to see first - i.e., I'm looking for particular coloration, size, shape, etc.

Otherwise, the guarantee that I get from mail order is well-worth it.

I agree that buying only one fish may make the $$ similar to buying from a LFS.

And, you should ALWAYS quarantine any livestock that you purchase - from a LFS or mail order.

The down side to ordering online is that you don't get to see what you are ordering. Their idea of a medium may be your idea of a small, different species come, DOA's, etc.
You get what you pay for. Personally i am more than willing to pay an extra $5 -10 to support the LFS, knowing I will make that back up in information and simple avalibility. Its a whole lot quicker to drive over and pick up salt than wait for UPS because the LFS was run out of buisness by the internet stores.

I am a big fan of buying fish from LFS around me because they are great quality and I don't mind paying a little more to pick out what I want.

Now with that said I just had my first experience with ordering online about a week ago when I ordered 6 Anthias and a large clean up crew. I have a qt set up and so far the Anthias are doing very well. The colors are awsome and they look healthy (so far). There are a few reasons I decided to order online and the main ones were price and guarantee. One LFS around me wanted $65 per Anthias and the other wanted $35 but would not qt them for me because he has had bad luck with them in the past. So I ordered online, got a 2 week guarantee and I will see how that works out :)

While I don't mind spending a few $$$ more to get the exact fish I want, sometimes the price difference is more than $20-40 per fish (aka the anthias above, around here they're at least $50 per for the ones I can get online for $35 that adds up if I get 7)

I also sometimes want a fish when I want it, not when the LFS can get it.

I tend to buy from both LFS and online, about 50/50!

I ordered from liveaquaria for the first time a few months ago. Everything arrived alive and in good health. Out of seven critters, I only had one loss in the first two weeks and they refunded my money for that one with no problems (as per their 14 day guarantee).

I don't know if other people get a guarantee from their LFS but I know that the two stores near me don't guarantee anything; it could die on the way back to your house and they wouldn't give you a refund. So that 14 day guarantee seems really nice to me.

As others said though, it is a bit of a downside that you don't get to see the actual fish before you buy it.

My LFS never has what I want. If you want a Six Line Wrasse or a $150 tang you are in luck. I have been asking for a Carpenters Wrasse for months. They also do not quarantine or guarantee anything. Liveaquaria sounds great to me. R
