Is multibar angel LPS safe?

I've come across a 2.5"multibar angel that eats frozen well at a LFS. Question is, is it known to eat LPS?

Multibars have a decent reputation as far as reef compatibility is concerned, however, I have heard of a few picking at LPS. If he is a healthy specimen and is eating hardily I would go ahead and add him. One of the major things to keep in mind when attempting to mix angels and coral (aside from the species' natural diet/tendencies) is to keep the angel well fed and the coral nice and healthy. Angels (or any fish for that matter) are much more likely to target dying or just unhealthy corals. Go for it, that is one beautiful fish :D

Do you recall what specific LPS it was picking at?

Ah, I dont :headwally: But some of the "meatier" LPS would likely be at the most risk. Ive seen hippo tangs pick at LPS and a sailfin who had a thing for tridacna clams though, so really any fish will come with some degree of risk.

I've been keeping Multi-Bar angels for the past 18 months. I had 2 prior to my tank crash in the fall, and have a trio currently. I have a wide array of LPS - Acans, Blastos, Hammer, Frog Spawn, Torch, and Deshayesiana.

They have yet to touch any of them.

I have plenty of SPS, clams of all sizes and easily over 1000 polyps.

My multibars hunt throughout the rocks and leave everything else alone.

I can sign o2manyfish's post. I have a multibar in my tank for like 4 months and he did not touch any corals in the tank. He etas everything (but likes spirulina-flakes the most). I have some LPS corals in the tank but he does not touch them. He is picking in the rocks for pods alot.

Did you get them when they were juvenile?

Sc50964,

I like tiny fish, but I haven't seen tiny Mutli-Bars. The smallest I see are maybe 1 3/4". That's what my previous pair were. With the trio two are 1.75" and one is about 2".

I wouldn't say they were young juveniles, but they weren't full adults. Here are some photos taken a couple of days after they arrived (June 5th). So that makes the trio doing well and happy for 6 weeks so far.

It's a risk like all angels are, just depends on how much you like your LPS if the angel decides to start picking. I believe well fed angels are much less likely to eat your corals than those that are sparingly fed

Wow..., can you elaborate more on what happened? Was it taking frozen or prepared food?

It was and still is taking both frozen and prepared foods, It first started picking at the Acans and I stupidly thought nothing of it due to me having around six good size colonies. I couldn't remove the fish as it meant dismantling the tank so just left it to it :sad2:

Man..., sorry to hear that.

I tried ..... and failed. Juuuuust a bit too slow %&*#@^& I don't recall seeing these on DD before?

No not often. What I don't get is why I use to be able to buy LA fish that now seemingly are only offered by DD? Few examples, small Tusks, zebra eel, Bellus females, sargassum, AT... I love the customer service and guarantee but don't love the low availability of LA specimens. Some species are better purchased thru DD like the multibarrs, MI, Orange spot file fish, anything paired... Without question
