Islander's Old School Reef – 900 Gallon Display

Wow! looking really sharp with the glass panels. The room looks like it's coming together nicely, always a lot of work building a home.

Forgot to ask I read part VHO and I read Ai leds was wondering are you going combo? what are your plans for lights. Also on closed loop will you be using Abyzz controls for alternating flow or will you be using flow devices like oceans motions?

Thanks! And yes renovation is a lot of work, I am glad it's coming to an end....!

Amazing start!

Thanks! So is your tank :)

Great choice on flow and Abyzz. Did you get ACS module as well? Amazing setup following for sure.

Yes I am controlling the Abyzz pumps with ACS

Yes I am doing a combination of MH, VHO, and LEDs.
I am only using the ACS to control the closed loops.

Z is helping me build a similar size tank 10 x 4 x 3 and back 3 months ago I was set on abyzz and was planning for 5 or 6 A200s but after just about everyone saying how much money they were I shifted to Red dragon in my design 2 x Rd 150s for closed and 2 x Rd 230 for sump and leverage oceans motion on each closed loop
My major concern is noise, I want things really quite, and it would be nice to not have a huge electric bill either
Any thoughts about abyzz vs red dragon ?

?

?

Yifan917,

As mesee2 mentioned we are looking into several ways to achieving optimal Closed loop. I to agreed and was on the red dragon band wagon as I have heard them and they are near silent. But after reading the ACS and the boast modes and seeing a few YouTube vidoes of them pulsing, I like the idea of not using oceans motions and a few hundreds of dollars of valves to be able to service or replace and instead using ap200s.

Not sure if you have this yet but it would be of great help to us. Do you have any renderings / drawings of how the plumbing will look like? Also what modes on ACS do you plan on using?

Thanks,
Z

The reason why I chose Abyzz was because of its good reputation and 10 year warranty. And yes it's more expensive but I decided to spend most of my budget on the heart of the system (Tank + pumps) I believe my investment will pay off in the long run. I have experienced return pump failure two times in the past and I am not going to let this happen again, therefore I got two Abyzz A200s for main returns.

I have never looked into RD return pumps but they got really good reviews as well, I just got myself a RD3 skimmer pump for my old BK skimmer. Abyzz is very quiet when I tested it, and extremely powerful, I am very impressed. I think in terms of quietness you won't go wrong with either pump. In terms of power consumption, I will be running the returns in low speed most of the time, therefore should not be a big issue for me.

Hope that helps!

Sure if you check back later I will try to find the drawing for you. The drawing is actually for drillings, not the plumbing works, therefore the only thing you see will be a bunch of holes lol.

All my returns and closed loops are pushing water from the back to the front of the tank, I kinda regret to set it up this way because you will be seeing a bunch of holes when you are viewing the tank in the front. I will have to play around the returns with PVC pipes and rock work.

For the ACS programs, I think most of the time I will be running on pulsing mode.

Some update for plumbing - nothing is glued yet so changes can still be made.

That's a lot of PVC pipes man.... kinda regret to drill so many holes for closed loops especially when I don't have plenty of space in the fish room.

When are you doing a test run? Do I see threaded bulk heads? Any worries on minor leaks from all those threads (Also salt creap)? I assume the valves are adjusted to accommodate water making it to the top? Are those check valves?

one word of advice re: all the ball valves. I would install them so they can be removed easily...after a couple of years they will freeze solid w/ calcium carbonate build up...best to remove them every once in a while and give a vinegar bath.
Otherwise, WOW! Nice build!

Valve

Valve

wjgeese,

I agree. I assumed the reason for using the threaded bulk heads was to make it removable but noticed all three cant untwist together. That said I would place true union ball valve PVC across all bulkheads. Meesee2 and I planed the 850 gallon closed loop with true unions. Primarily since the whole union can be serviced our replaced. (Granted it will cost a small fortune but well worth it). True unions ball valves are far better at moving and adjusting.
