It Finally Happened!

I came home today and noticed my clowns have finally laid eggs. It's a small clutch maybe 30 or 40 eggs but they finally spawned.

Guess it's time to get geared up. Going to let the first set go and time the spawn so that I will be ready for spawn number two.

My clowns have been in the tank as juveniles since I adopted them from someone who bought them for their husband and didn't realize he had a fresh water tank and not salt.... Long story.. I figured the clowns are about 2.5 years old.

I've read two books Wilkerson's and Frank Hoff's book but am going to re-read them for a refresher...

Keep us updated! Wsurf donated 21 to my classes and I think they were born in May '06. Hopefully we'll get some clown lovin going on. The kids suggested turning the lights down, playing some sexy music, and dumping a glass of wine in the tanks. I said that wasn't such a good idea (even though I think that's how I got my first child :D ).

Keep us informed. I really want to hear about it.

I'd like to take some unfortuntly with the angle of the tile I can not get a shot to where you would be able to see anything.

Thats awesome! We hope our clowns will lay eggs some day.
Keep us posted & would love to see pictures.

Congrats Dave! That is so cool to hear... Where did you find the eggs? I can't wait for my percs to spawn, they have been mated for almost 2 years now....

Update, this morning I looked to see how the eggs where doing, looks like there might be a few less but it's hard to tell with just the actinics on.
Does anyone know if John carries any resting rotifers? If not I better get my order in to get some shipped now.

Hey all, for those of you that have done this clown rearing stuff, is it normal for clowns to eat some of the eggs? I think they are grooming the dead ones out, but wonder if its a nutritional thing?

Congrat warnberg, did they just start breeding on their own or did you do somethign that sparked the baby making :) Sorry i dont know the answer to your questions, im not very experienced with breeding clownfish.

I'm not sure to tell you the truth. Over the last several months I have definitely been making some changes to the tank, reason being is a flood, which cascaded into many other issues. Since that time I have been battling a red turf algae outbreak. I have changed salt, lights, lighting period. But what I think actually triggered the spawn was a slight rise in temp and a lighting cycle change, halides are on for a shorter period and the actinics are on for about an hour longer.
That's all I can think of that may have caused the spawn.

The male clownfish is in charge of egg tending. He will fan the eggs often and will mouth the eggs which will dislodge any eggs that are maturing improperly. I have two sets of clownfish - ocellaris and percula (in seperate tanks) which spawn and I have noticed that egg count is always smaller the day after the initial spawn - this is normal! Congrats to the happy couple!

Well... it happened again and they are still laying right now....thought this was supposed to happen just before/after light out. Much bigger clutch this time.
