its hip to be square....

Okay so a little update on my led experience. It has ONLY been ONE month tho.
Pros: - love the long photo period for my pleasure
- less "film" on glass for removal(could be due to newest tinker with skimmer)
- corals pop under bluer lights during ramp up/down period

Cons: - decrease in coraline algae, could be good or bad. Also could be a number of things but my numbers have stayed steady
- lost a small colony of Grandi palys due to too intense light
-more frequent upset corals
- way less spread. Could probably stand to add 2 more fixtures

Now, like I said its only been a month and I ran MH previously so that's what I'm used too. My lights now max out at 35% blue and 25% white for intensity as I acclimate the corals. Most corals are doing fine but a leather and some Anthelia both seem to be upset frequently. But skimmer is working better than before with finding what I think the sweet spot on this skimmer. I use a toothbrush 1-2 times a week cleaning out my neck in the skimmer. Full of nasty sludge and emptying the shut off container once a week. Feed a ton tho for the 25 fish to all eat enough. So we will see how this goes, I think in another month I can raise up a few %'s of intensity which should help my eyes trick my brain to "brightness". Might even add a few more SPS in the tank if I can get these ones to grow....

hmm, no coralline growth with LEd's , I have been running radion G2 for the past 2 years and add a kessil A360we 5 months ago- can never get a spot of coralline to grow but the corals sure do!

I have had coraline grow all over the place to include the back wall and all over the rock.

I am using Radions.

It's weird and maybe just the coraline getting used to new light. As prior to the LED wig my MH it grew like crazy, all over the tank. So I am just watching it to see how things play out.

Corey

Its acting like the corals. Once they acclimate to the light it will take off soon. Its been a month also for my LEDs and having the same results as you.

Yeah Wayne, I agree with that. It is just an acclimation time for everything to adjust. For new frags coming into the tank, I am really hoping to find some pieces tag come from LED lit tanks. Will make the tank to tank transfer a little easier.

So corals seem to be adapting to leds. I have noticed I only wipe my glass clean about every 2 weeks now. Could be partly due to lights or skimmer is really tuned well. Just ordered a Hannah pho4 to check them.
On another note, I've added a orange hammer euphyllia, a green and purple on and waiting on a sweet blue tipped one!!!

Hey Corey! Just ran into your thread. Tremendous job!! I havent seen many tanks in our dimensions. I went with minimal pinned rockscape, to break the line of sight for the fish while allowing lots of open space. The beauty of our dimensions is that it allows the fish to swim around non-stop without having to turn around. It really gives a nice natural effect. Almost like you would see with cylindrical tanks.

Here are a few crappy shots of mine that i just took. Please excuse the wires, magnets and other distractions.

I will be following this thread closely!

Jack, I love that rockwork!!! I considered that style too. Do you have any pictures with coral growing out?

Corey

No, unfortunately I don't... I used to have plenty as it was a mixed reef before taking a break. Now that I am happy with my fish selection I will start to add them. It will be a mixed reef. No meaty lps or clams because of the angels.

I would love to see the grow out of a rock scape like that!! That is why I always wanted a sweet pillar set up. Yours looks great man. Do you have a build link?

Corey

Well, with the help of worm we were able to get my apex online via a gaming router and program my WXM to run my vortech pumps. So cool to watch the change in flow.
Thanks again Worm!!!!

Corey

Awesome I used a gaming adapter as well. Do you have access outside the network? For me it was a pain to do the port-forwarding and getting the DDNS crap setup.

BTW - I am selling out of the 48"x48" club. I just scored an amazing deal on a 96"x30"x27" so I've posted my tank and stand for sale... It's bitter sweet I am sad to let it go.

I'm struggling too outside the network. But working on it soon I seen your tank for sale, hell of a deal for someone!!!
I'll be looking for a build thread of the new one!

You are welcome. Take a video, I am curious how it looks.

If you use the apex fusion site you can hit it and see it with no problems.
While I do have a web cam (that is accessible from outside) I have had no issues setting up DDNS and port forwarding. Granted I do computers for a living, too.

I'm struggling too outside the network. But working on it soon.

Hit me up sometime and we can see if we can fix it. Can you add me to the 'viewonly' list? (worm5406)

Yeah buddy, when I get home later, I'll put you on the list for sure. :)
Do you post video just like a photo?

Actually after posting it to youtube thee is a section below the video that says share... then embed. Copy and paste it right into the text of the message, here in the forum.

Just make sure you use a <enter> before and after, otherwise it will have text right after the video and can look strange in the forums.

I'll have to sign up to gmail to get a YouTube account. Lol. Never posted videos really. Have once I think. Picked up a sweet blue tip torch coral from my LFS yesterday. Did a water change, checked parameters. Everything looks good, nitrates about .10-.15 I think. Po4 was low too. But my alk was 10.3 or so, I have my CaRx off until I have a need for it. Corals look good tho for most part. Few SPS I am trying don't seem to have any growth at all. I moved them down in the tank thinking maybe too much light. Leds are 11-12 inches off the water of a 24 inch tank. And only running them at 24% intensity or so, for a few hours a day. I've never had SPS before so it's all new to me. I wonder if the leather in my tank could be polluting the water. It's been shedding lately due to some reason or another.
