It's just another 40 Breeder thread

nice stand, love the 'pillar' look on the sides :) Can I ask why you painted the inside blue? is that some type of sealant or simply for aesthetics?

Well its about to be on!!! Got 99% of the plumbing done. Just need caps for the returns and drop a pipe down into the skimmer section. So where should the drains end? Underneath the level of water in the skimmer section of the sump or above?

Enjoy

I have the water from the dt draining into my sump with the end of the drain under water in the skimmer section. I also use a filter sock here. It's as much for stopping bubbles and salt creep as it is for filtration.

looks good man, can't wait to see it filled and running!

You and me both. Lol. I just have a few final things to do. Im waiting on my ATO to arrive today, so it should be up and running within the next week. The rockwork is gonna sick :)

So the day of reckoning has come upon me. It got wet. Its on like donkey kong lol. Everything is working well. Seen some pods and a nassarius also crawling on the sand. Didnt take too much work for the rock work as I already had set on how the two big pieces on the left were gonna look like a mountain with a cave in the middle. I think its perfect :)

Sump area. Im gonna get more live rock but going to let it do its cycle first.

Looks good. Water level would scare me. If you have to put your arm in there, hope the over flows keep up with the sudden rise.

So day 3. No activity yet with the water. All still zero. But po4 was .10. I need to invest in a RODI unit.

Im wondering if a clean crew when its time will help with that???

good start, getting antsy to put water in my 40 project as well. The clean up crew will help a little as par as p04's go but not a whole lot. they will just slightly help get some of the big stuff out before it turns into phosphates thats all. I wouldn't rely on them :)

Well just a quick update. Getting some growth on the rock. Is it dinos??

No ammonia or nitrites. Off to a good start. I do have 2 nassarius that came in the sand. But they dont move too much. What does that mean if they arent moving?

Hard to tell without a closer picture, but it looks like diatoms on the rock. To be expected, and the CUC should help. Just part of the cycle.

I dumped my nassarius snails in my old 29g reef, and didn't see them for a pretty long time. Then they emerged one by one.

Pure water is the key to a successful reef. Get an RO/DI unit. You won't be sorry if you do, but you will likely be sorry if you don't.

Edit: Did you introduce an ammonia source to your tank? It can't cycle without that...

I threw some mysis in there the other day. But tonight I did a quick water test. My ammonia was .25 and nitrites were 0 so its off and running :)
