Jebao does it again with a new Knockoff - A DC Water Pump calling it the "Eco-Tech"

For many people buying an mp40 is buying status quo. Like the chumps that drive hummers!

We have ignorant and racists people here on RC
I'm not sure I agree with that either. I got my MP40 to help randomize the flow in my tank, which it has done a wonderful job of. You'll note, it isn't plastered in my sig or many others that own them, so I'm not sure where you're getting your information. Also "status quo" is being misused. The status quo: the existing state of affairs... so people are buying an MP40 to keep the existing state of affairs?

He can say or not say whatever he wants, whenever he wants (almost). That's his right and I stand 100% behind his right to say it.

If the only thing he wants to do is insult me, something hardly anybody else here on RC has done (and I thank you for not getting personal), then that's just OK with me. Personally, if I were him, I'd show a thicker skin and stay out of the fight. It only hurts his company.

Or he could answer fishgate's great question. And I'd add a bit more. Even if your pumps are assembled in the US, how many of the components come from China, India, Indonesia or some other 3rd world country? But the true answer to that question might just hurt his company even more.

By the way, I don't hate Eco Tech... I don't even dislike them. I just think they sell fairly cool products that are quite well made and from what I hear, with pretty good customer service. But they sell at ridiculous prices and lock the distributors into that price so even they can't compete against each other. But they have every right to charge whatever they want. On the other hand, if they try to convince me that they spend a lot of money on R&D for basic pumps and led fixtures... :spin1::spin1::spin1:
It wasn't an insult, your comment was ignorant.
I didn't see it as an insult but a proper use of the word ignorant. All of us are ignorant of his R&D unless we have personally seen it. Over the years it has become apparent that far too many RC users lack basic grammar, punctuation and use of basic English language skills, and I already know you do not lack those skills. :smokin:

Agreed.

His comment should have been something like, "We welcome the competition trying to imitate us. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. We at EcoTech strive to provide a world-class product and do not believe that copies of our product fairly represent the years of ongoing research and development that incorporate all of our experiences as leaders in this arena......"

Or something like that...

The only comment I saw from him had nothing to do with the competition let alone imitation. If I missed that, I'm sorry.

The response I saw was in response to Ron suggesting that they do little to no RND at Eco Tech or Tunze which is clearly not the case. I thought Eco Techs response was direct and to the point when it comes to responding to a post as ludicrous as the one Ron made. Nothing against Ron, but a company doesn't design a pump like the Vortech's without serious RND.

While I do not currently own Vortech pumps, I have played with them before and that design required some very serious RND. Probably more so than the Tunze's that I use. Those Vortech's are amazing little pumps with incredible capabilities and there is nothing about their design that is cheap. Sadly, what most people don't realize is that many issues with the Eco Techs are more than likely the result of poor alignment between the wet side and dry side. Heck, the magnet scrapers or scrub brushes we use to clean our glass can easily knock them out of alignment if you are not careful causing premature failures. To the untrained eye or ear, the misalignment may go unnoticed and before you know there is a problem or excess noise.

Pretty sure some of the parts they use are made in China. I do recall seeing a "Made in China" logo somewhere on my MP40 but I'd have to double check.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would it be up to the consumer to research the products and make an informed purchase instead going in blind and playing the stupid card when the wrong item is purchased?

No wonder my wife gets upset when I look a product up on line, read the reviews, and look at consumer magazines before spending my money.

From now on I will just go to the store, hand the sales person all my money and tell him or her I will base my purchases on their opinions.

Ah it is good being one of the sheeple.

It is sad that people need protection for themselves but it seems to be a common trend in today's society.

This is very interesting Doc. What is this research you speak of ? Is this a new concept being an educated consumer?

You are missing the point. When you make a comment representing a company the proper etiquette to follow is always spin things in a positive way and be polite as can be. It matters not that technically his answer may have been correct. If he had a personal account on here with no reference to him being the CEO of EcoTech then the response would have been fine. Had he been anyone but the CEO he would have gotten a talk-to from someone at the company if they caught wind of it.

Never had problems with ecotech products or their customer services. A+ on every level. I did buy a d120 to see what the fuss was all about. Sold it a month later. Pretty much sums up my experience with chinese products. This isn't a cheap hobby. But I can't recall ever having a hobby that's so rewarding from day 1 outside of golf.

To each his own but please don't suggest that there's no research and development on EcoTech's part. That's just bashful ignorance.

I wonder when Jebao will chime in on this thread and address the ignorant comments about their products and methods of development. :spin1:

I run a high profile computer manufacturing business and also ran a well know RC Helicopter/Mail order business and I do tend to agree with you. I've run into similar situations and used those situations constructively to benefit business.

Now having said that, not everybody deals with things the same and to be honest, I thought Ron's comment was kind of ignorant myself especially coming from somebody as knowledgeable as Ron appears. Everybody deals with things different and some people are more cut and dry than diplomatic.

While Eco Techs response was not very diplomatic, I don't think it was uncalled for. It was direct, to the point and actually somewhat valid. It just wasn't very diplomatic which might rub some people the wrong way. You just have to look at the comment that it was in response to at face value and take it with a grain of salt so to speak.

I think Jebao took an existing product and improved its power output and drastically lowered its sales price while still making a reliable product. Whats wrong with that?

I'm totally against stealing an existing design and replacing it with a cheaper/lesser material with 0 improvments and crap quality, but that doesnt seem to be the case with Jebao's WP-40/25 products at the moment, so why bash them so hard?

I agree, their marketing technique with using names like WP-40 and eco-tech is a bit silly as it can confuse a buyer at a glance look while searching for an alike product from a similar named company. But, then again we wouldn't be having this conversation had they not used those names and they probably wouldn't be selling as much product at the moment if they hadn't. It's just a sales marketing technique alot of companies use to attract buyers to their product who may be in the market for that item and if a buyer chooses to opt for their product then so be it. Now, it doesnt mean that person doesnt support and purchase from companies like Vortech or Tunze, but maybe the dont see the value in that particular product for the price. so for me until Jebao pumps starting going up in flames they got my $$.

Does that make me any less american then the next guy? NOPE, because I still love this country and would fight for it anyday, but dammit I just want a cheaper wave maker that performs well!

I would love to have a couple of mp40's in my 120 for good flow, but i just can't spend that kind of money. A single wp40 has been doing a great job in moving the water around and at a fraction of the price. Don't get me wrong, I prefer several of the options with the mp40 and if the wp40 fails, i hope i have the spare coin to get the mp next time around.

Huh??? They out right copied a patented design (Tunze) and clearly released an inferior product at a much cheaper price with absolutely NO service and support. There is nothing improved upon compared to the Tunze pumps they copied and they will not be as reliable long term. Heck, we are already hearing about issues with them and those that are having problems are for the most part TSOL. If you believe otherwise, then you either have not owned a Tunze or both or you have not read every thread on the WP-40's. I've owned Tunze's for years now and I've read every thread on the WP-40's. While I am sure these WP40's make great waves, they are not Tunze's and they will never be of that quality. If you have ever had your hands on both, you would understand but it's very clear you have not.

I'm sure these pumps may work just fine but there are already a decent number of DOA's reported on this forum and others and the jury is still out on their longevity which I am sure will be suspect. Especially given Jaebo's complete lack of support and service. If they were such great and well made pumps, don't you think they would be back with decent service and support?

Let me look into that and I will get back to you after I see what the internet says about that.

Maybe I will go make a poll.

:lmao:

IMO, if Ecotech increases its warranty on their product from 1 year to 5 years, more people will be comfortable buying their quality product. Since they are priced at a premium, I would think most people would expect their product to last more than one year. I know some products might failed within the warranty period, but as long as its quality built, the number should be small and increasing the warranty should have little impact on operating cost since I assume they are in the industry for the long haul.

Do you think a lot of R&D went into the version difference between the Last MP40 and the New one ? and do you think a lot of R&D is going on now for the next generation of the MP40 ? I'm talking R&D only and not design and planning.

I do not know and I am asking opinions not making a statement.

Yeah, I was real impressed with the comment as well. I'd like to think the CEO of Eco Tech would either have a thicker skin and ignore ignorant comments like mine, or step up and say something educated that would just go over my head! :lolspin:

What is he supposed to do? Let you go on and on and on about how the company doesn't do anything but, charge a price that you don't understand. Its realy easy to keep talking smack about a company or a person until they come back at you with something.

Personally, I'd like to see him get more involved in postings where people like you sit and bash his company about not doing any R&D.

Every post I've read where you have posted something lately you say something about Jaebo. But, your not pushing the company into peoples faces.

Stirring the pot with irrelevancy is also ridiculous. The idea, as plainly stated, came from a book about building an underwater robot. :-)

Ya I know, bored at work. But note that article covers both propeller pumps and dc pumps over a decade ago and everything out there now really copied someone else and just refined it into a retail level product. If the design of the Tunze is 10 years old (at least) and is just built on someone else's work, how much longer does it need to remain sacrosanct?
