I have a gap in my canopy along the back, 9.5 inches. Do I need to put egg crate across the whole thing or is 6 inches enough. How high do Gobis and clowns and other possibles jump. We are not talking an arriwana..... (thats probably spelled wrong but I am too tired to look it up). What does everyone think?

It happens, 6 inches should be plenty....why not put egg crate over the entire top of the tank?

As an alternative to eggcrate, I've had good luck covering the back of my canopies with plastic rain gutter guard from Lowes -- it comes in a roll, and is a flexible 6" black plastic mesh. I attach it with a couple of zip-ties, and it's easy to cut holes in for whatever equipment. Also doesn't rattle if a pump or fan vibrates... You could run two strips of it across if you want to cover the whole 9.5 inches.
(If you have jumpers, this stuff is also handy for covering the top of overflows)
