Jumped the shark.

So it's been in the works for weeks. Today I finally went and picked him up. He's a four week old black banded bamboo. Currently in the process of acclimating him. He'll be spending the next few months in my 58 gallon Q tank, then onwards to the 220. He'll be the first and only fish in there for a while. Might add a small japanese ray eventually, but for now...he makes me happy.

Glad to hear about another successful shark keeper!

Here's my girl:

Congratulations!!
I love the idea of the simple open tank dedicated to a beautiful shark.
Is a black banded the same as a brown banded?

She's beautiful. We should start a club. The "We have sharks and you don't so Thppppptttt!!" Club. otherwise known as WhSaYDST.

Thanks!

I think that would be a great idea! Maybe a different name, though.

Ok, maybe a differant name for the club. I'm actually a bit surprised. He's been very active. Swimming in laps around the tank and "walking" along the bottom exploring. So far the only problem I've was with the urchins in the tank. The longspine got moved because the shark kept trying to swim through the spines and I though it might do some damage. The other was with the pencil urchin (Who I hate anyway.) that decided it wanted to perchatop the shark. The long spine has already been moved, and the pencil is leaving in a couple hours to the LFS.

They will be active until they are 100% comfortable w/ the tank, Once they are set, your guy will have a hiding spot during the day, and become very active nocturanally ^^.

I agree. Mine did the same thing.

Chiloscyllium punctatum or Chiloscyllium griseum? The first is the Brown Banded Bamboo, the other is commonly called a Gray Banded Bamboo. Haven't been able to find a picture of a juvenile C. Griseum to compare though. Are Brown Banded's black and gray when young or no?

Got pics last night....but left the camera at home. However the clams I ordered are supposed to be here today so while I'm dripping them in I'll do some uploading.

Stop. Take a deep breath. Now understand something about sharks. They are not like other fish. You have to be seriously dedicated to keeping one. I have been planning for months to get one and have everything setup especially for one. No powerheads in the tank, nothing electrical in the tank at all. also the minimum size tank you'll need for one is fairly outrageous. The 220 gallon tank I have is only for a year or so. As soon as I can scrape together the cash I'll be building a lagoon to house it.

Sharks are kinda the arowana of salt water. Everyone wants one, but don't realize just what they are getting into. If you can't house it for life....don't. I'm planning on having mine for 10+ years. So think long and hard and make sure you understand their special needs. If you've done that and think you can handle...no...KNOW you can handle it, then worry about price.
