EEEK!! need support!!

sooo.. Everything was going fine until a ric i ordered disenagrated and i had a nitrate spike. Cleared that up and got frags i ordered from here..they were shipped no heat etc...and three of them arnt even there!! trying to baby the three that survived shipping..THEN my beautiful yellow watchman goby "Mooch"" died yesterday. It was soo sad.. Being a freshi to start with i have never heard of a fish who is anorexic and wont eat!! Stupid fish tried soo hard to lure him out to eat!! He finally came out to die as i watched helpless (stupid fish). I am soo sad and concerned about the tank. All the parameters (water) looks good. Actually great!!. I have had a lot of help from my afficiano friend and seem to be doing everything right. Any ideas why this is sooo hard? Just dumb bad luck? I have been so patient with this set up..and am not overcrowding or anything!! It is a 14 gallon oceanic..Feeling bummed..waaaaa poor Mooch!!

thought id show you the new frags..mmm

sorry to hear that your ywg died. good luck nursing your polyps back to health! be sure to dose some iodine so they can regenerate their tissues

thanks for advice..question

thanks for advice..question

I have heard iodine is controversial? ? i will try tho thank you!!

i remember reading alot about soft corals tissue deteriorating and many suggested using iodine to help it recover, which it did. in my tank, i have a piece of liverock that has two heads of polyps on it that looks dead (smooshed, turning white) ever since i set up the tank a month ago. just until last week when i started adding a couple of drops of iodine per week, it opened within 3 days of dosing. now the color is bluish grey.

I've been using Kent's iodine since I started doing reef and have always had good results with very, very few die-offs. I highly recommend it no matter what you hear. Use it per directions or just less than. I maintain a 240 for someone and have her dosing iodine daily along with moly/strot and liquid calcium and the growth of her corals is unbelievable and the pink coraline grows in rosettes. She has a 12+ head of bright red blasto that grew out of a frag of frogspawn, didn't even know it was there when we got it 8 months or so ago.
I dose this tank daily with 3 drops, except the day I do a water change, then none and maybe the day after.

So what do you all think of the 14gl Oceanic? Downside-upside? I am thinking of getting one here in the next day or 2. I saw one on sale for $140. Any input would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your imput..leaning on doing it..lol

As for the 14 gallon oceanic..I love it!! So simple, very few modifications...easy easy easy...upside!! easy lol down side small..i started small due to financial constraints and being a freshi girl wanted to make sure i could manage it...not good lighting for sp's is also a down side but zoos, rics rock!! I think it is beautiful have nothing bad to say really!! DO IT!! lol gl

FLricordia, I have been very happy with my cube! As cmb88 mentioned A couple of mods would help. I pulled the bioballs and filter cartridge and now just leave a small wad of filter floss on the drip tray that i change every few days. You might want to get a more powerful powerhead than the stock one they supply or drop an extra PH in the display. I keep LR rubble in the second chamber and small wad of chaeto in the display that I trim as it grows.

140 is a great price!
my biggest complaint would be it is a little too tight when it comes to cleaning the glass. I sort of wish I sprung for the larger one for that reason!

If the dates on your posts are actually indicative of the age of the tank (first 3/03/07 last 3/21/07) then your WAY overloaded WAY too soon. This is a VERY slow and PATIENT hobby. Getting overly anxious only leads to more money spent on replacing dead fish and inverts. Mr. Mooch probably died from being stressed by a spike in the ammonia from the sudden bio-overload.

Take your time. After all, I am sure you plan on having this tank for years to come. Why rush the beginning of a long term relationship. Think of it as a woman. Only bad ones let you have immediate reward and may cause disease/death. The good ones take a little more time for the reward and like to be treated with special care.

thanks for advice.

thanks for advice.

yes i know thank you..I started this post a couple weeks after i got my clean up crew Jan 3rd was my date!! .. lol took me awhile to figure out this stuff spent three months just reading threads..I did dark cycle for 5 weekes..clean up crew 3 weeks, 1 ric 1 zoa 2 weeks, and now 6 zooa for last weeks and half..SLOW SLOW i promise!!

As for women and being slow..lol i met hubby was not patient and have been with him 11 yrs lol no diseases hahah...

i do appretiate the comments tho thank you

i wrote this for someone else gives an idea of what i did in my timeline

thought id throw my imput here.. you asked the same questions i researched asked and got answered by a friend whose been doing this a long time. thought id share my experiance.. I have a 14 gallon oceanic..

I covered the tank ad kept it extra long on complete dark cycle to kill of anything that may have lived algae etc..I was warned to bee veeery patient. lol

made sure full cycle was complete not just mini cycle...then added lights slowly 6 hrs a day...added clean up crew. I had pink coraline starting to grow some brown (not as bad as yours)

then after two weeks i added 1 zoo and 1 star paly..increased lights 12 hrs a day.. 1 hour actinic, 10 hrs 10k, then 1 hr actinic, then 1 hr actinic then 3 hrs lunar.

The zoo was doing well and so was the star polyp..so my friend said i could add a pistol an yellow watchman goby!! YAY.. I tried soo hard to get him to come out of cave and eat..I used brine shrimp (they say flavorful no nutrients tho) to lure him out and mysin shrimp. Nothing..He starved to death!! waaa...then i added a ric i ordered from a store..it looked sick and disenagrated in my tank!! caused a nitrate spike. WHOA!! what a pain. I use RO water and mix with "instant oceanic" salt.. I also invested in refractometer..(life savior)..I do use the test strips for nitrate and love em.. Maybe not exactly accurate but peace of mind. Im a vet tech and use them all the time!! if there is trace i take water in to petstore...also my tank is 84 degrees, spec grav 1.025...I do a water change 1 gallon (10%) once a week.

So now i have 6 other zoos doing well.. but have been warned not to jump the gun and over crowd my tank with too much at once. frags or fish..can spike water high..especially with a problem... Oh as for acclimation..I float the frags for 30 min..cut hole in bag and drop some of my tank water in it through out..then dump almost all water out into tub..(you dont want their water) and gentley pull frag out..Fish are harder..same process just drop your water in the bag while they float a little longer hen let them gentley swim out on their own.. Hope that helps!! anyway just thought i would share!! gl PATIENCE PATIENCE PATIENCE!! lmao i know its hard!! GL
look me up i have pics too!! etc...poor "mooch" my fish that sucked stupid fish!! ohh also look into your lights.. i almost bough that tank but not a lot of light..some people say dont get sps in that thing!! do some research..mines gonna be a ric/zoo/shroomy tank!!

I am very excited tho because i just ordered a crazy pack from pazzaz!! and am stoked!!!! Get ready for some crazy purple death pics soon!!! YAAAAYY.. also Mooch the 2nd is succesfully in the tank and eating..couldnt be happier..there is the piggy yw goby we know!! Aight guys..Pics soon.. See ya!!

OH QUESTION:: soo being an old freshi girl i was wondering...any of you ever put bubbles in a salt water tank on back wall? is that weird? bad for the fish, frags etc? thought it might look cool!! lmk
