Just ordered Canon 50D

After agonizing indecision I decided to make the plunge and just ordered a:
-Canon 50D
- 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens
- 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Autofocus Lens
- Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens

Just when I thought reefing couldn't get any more expensive!! :)

I'll post some pics when it gets here in a couple days once I figure it out.

Seeeeexy. Wow. That is some high quality gear. You will LOVE it! :)
I use a 40D, 100mm f/2.8 macro, 70-200mm f/2.8 IS, and 50mm f/1.4 so I can really say you are a man after my own heart! haha

That 70-200...man...it just doesn't get better than that! Well the 24-70 is just as good...but it doesn't get any better than either!

Yeah I took a while checking out the forums before I made my decision. I swear I've seen your avatar picture on several other photography forums. Actually I would have ordered the 50 f/1.4 if BH would have had it in stock.

Yeah I'm on POTN and a few others. I spent a full year on Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, and Pentax forums before I even chose a brand.

Titus, why would you use a 50mm lens? I know you also have a 24-70. Like if you shoot concerts you use it then or what? Not like it is L series or anything. Quality can't be as good?

I like the 50mm f/1.4 and while it is true I practically never take this lens out of the bag it because of the 24-70...it has its super wide aperture uses. I could sell it but...I like it too much and find times, such as shooting my brothers band in poorly lit bars and indoor skate parks, where the 1.4 holds its worth.

A 50mm lens is a great thing to have because it matches perception to the human eye. Things which are far away are the size they should be compared to things which are close. If I shoot someone in front of the statue of liberty @ 24mm, the person will appear larger than they really are. If I shoot someone in front of the statue of liberty @ 70mm, the statue will appear larger than it really is. @ 50mm everything looks the same size as it would in relation to everything else as if I was standing there looking at it with my own eyes. Even with my 24-70 I often shoot at 50mm specifically for this reason.

The 24-70 sees 10,000% more time mounted to my camera than my 50mm does. Really the 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8 IS make up about 95% of my photographs (if not more). The 10-22 f/3.5-4.5, 50mm f/1.4, and 100mm f/2.8 polish up the rest...but they all have their place and purpose. I don't regret any photography purchase I have ever made.

If I could only use 1 lens for the rest of my life it would be the 24-70...but I sure would miss the 70-200! They really are two peas in a pod.

congrats on the new purchase but did you see this?

Canon Rebel T1i ($799 body only at B&H)

You might want to cancel that order and hold of for another month or two. I had my heart set on a 5D Mark II but I will be holding those urges to see the reviews. Looks have the photo abilities of the 50D along with the HD capabilities of the 5D MarkII.

Looks like Canon raises the bar yet again!:bounce1: :celeb2: :bounce2: :celeb3: :bounce3:

Hmmm wow, that kind of sucks ;) I bought a 50D for almost $1100 like 3 months ago, and it looks to me like the T1i is the same features BUT can also do HD video, plus it takes SD cards which I like better.

Not to mention it costs $300 less...

Although if it's the physical size of the Xsi, I'm not sure if I'd like it, it didnt fit my hands well. Although for $300, I might be able to deal with it ;)

I totally agree with you, I just want to add that you cannot compare a wide zoom lens such as 24-70. The 50mm 1.4 normal prime lens is one of a kind. I can appreciate it's simplicity and also see much sharper images coming out of this lens. I also second that it isn't for everyday/every situation use. I'm using the Nikor 50mm 1.4, it was about $300, I like it a lot, it was money well spent.

Naw the 24-70 f/2.8 blows the 50mm f/1.4 out of the water, hence why the 50mm f/1.4 is very rarely used. The only reason I would use the 50mm is if I had the need super fast speed. The of course 24-70 is plenty fast on its own for almost every scenario anyway, and its much higher quality makes it a pleasure to use...which again is why it trumps the 50mm 95% of the time.

I wouldn't sweat it. If I could choose between a 50D and the new rebel I would take the 50D. For one I don't see the craze over DSLR's which can shoot video. Video and still photography are two very different mediums. Video cameras don't make good still cameras and still cameras don't make good video cameras.

The new 500D looks and sounds good but I would rather have a 50D, 40D, 30D, or 20D. If I owned a 10D I would consider the 500D an upgrade...but...otherwise no.

Well, can't really speak for a 24-70, I don't have one. But that's good to know!

The Rebel line is a great line of cameras and they do an amazing job of testing out thier new technologies on it. But if you don't care for all the bells and whistles, you can't beat the quality of the D series for the price.

So is the new T1i going to be the size of the Xsi or the size of the 50D? I'm assuming the size of the Xsi?
