just thought I share an e-mail I just sent out

Just saw on channel 13 news PETA is trying to stop Raley's from doing this and Raley's has decided that they will not be selling lobsters anymore! Way to go Alex!

Um, am I the only one who does not think this is a good thing? I am not suggesting Raley's were not in the wrong, but it really irritates me when the first course of action is do away with it altogether. I mean when does it stop? When somebody gets offended, then people bow to the pressure and its ruined for everyone. I eat lobster - its good food, so now one less chain store to sell them is a good thing?

Not trying to get all soap boxy, but good intentioned (albeit gone awry) ideas of providing seafood for the holidays is not a bad thing. Its too bad PETA simply focus on shutting things down rather than educating and making real reasonable suggestions that could allow people to get their lobsters in some sort of humane way.

Oh, I will shut up now. :)

wow :) I got a letter from them yesterday and I was extremely excited, I do see the point of loosing a place to get them, but as it turns out that chain of stores only gets those occasionally which sure went in to their decision not to purchase lobster tanks to use in their stores...their choice to stop selling them is more than likely cheaper than outfitting every store with a tank, and considering the loss they take every time a large percentage of their shipment dies before the sale it only makes sense to stop selling them...
Most people do not rely on Raley’s random lobster shipments for their dinners so I don't see it as a big loss.
I would guess that neither Minh nor Mike sit around waiting for Raley's to see these before going out and purchasing live lobsters, I'm sure you have a preferred place that at the very least has a tank to keep them in until the sale.

Like I said before, I love eating lobster; I just don't like to torture the creatures for days before I eat them.

here is the letter I received last night.

Alex,

You’ll be pleased to know that using the photos and info you armed us with, we mobilized our activists and members to contact Raley’s over their abuse of lobsters. In just over 24 hours, nearly 3,000 people e-mailed all of the top executives at Raley’s, asking them to discontinue their sale of live lobsters entirely. Well, Raley’s agreed, and has pledged to not sell live lobstersâ€"at allâ€"any more.

Your actions have resulted in countless animals being spared miserable lives in Raley’s stores and you should be very proud. Again, thanks so much for bringing this to our attention.

Best,

Matt Prescott
p.s. to anyone who says one person can’t make a difference….. :-)

Hey -

Is it just me and Mike that sees the irony in this whole thing about working with PETA?

Let's invite PETA to talk at one of our meeting. They can try to close down the inhumane hobby of keeping fish in an aquarium.

Minh

Minh, no it’s not just you seeing PETA in that light. PETA has been know as an extremist group, yet we can’t discount everything they do because of their past. I see this particular issue to have been done in good faith and for the benefit of the lobsters, and I support that 100%.

Again, I do not agree with everything that PETA does, but this was good.

If this would have been any other not so extreme group, it would have been seen as beneficial, so let’s not look at this from the PETA stand point and more from a caring animal loving standpoint.
Minh, I have known you for a pretty long time and respect you and your opinion, I just disagree on this being a bad thing…

Nope not alone Minh. Is the packaging unethical, I believe it to be so.

-but-

From the PETA blog regarding this incident:

It goes without saying that this is a massive victory for lobsters everywhere, who suffer immeasurably in grocery-store lobster tanks before being boiled alive. Raley's compassionate decisionâ€"along with the example of Safeway and Whole Foodsâ€"sends a strong message to supermarkets everywhere that cruelty of this sort simply will not be tolerated. A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to write to Raley's about this issue! Thanks to your kindness, countless lobsters will be saved from a horrific fate.

PETA has a long history of taking a good thing and perverting it.

Went to Raley's last night. Not a single lobster in sight:)

I'm all for it. I'm sure Alicia Silverstone is free:lol:

A few things to consider.

1. Raleys didn't package them that way, that's how they were shipped in.

2. Albertson's had them, the same way, a couple of months ago.

3. While I personally don't care for lobster, my family tells me that they were delicious.

:D

I just couldn't resist not chiming in here FWIW.
Yes, I agree the lobsters would live longer if kept in cold saltwater in the stores, like where you can pick out which one you want for dinner. It is standard practice for lobsters to be packaged and shipped cross-country on ice and seaweed, usually Ascophyllum. When I lived on the east coast I had a good friend who was a lobsterman in Maine and I bought and shipped many lobsters from him in that manner and they always arrived alive.
Of course, you are free to do what you want, but me personally, I avoid PETA at all costs. With regards to wildlife, these people have created a lot more problems than they solve with their zero-tolerance anti-hunting and fishing stances. I agree with one of the previous posters that said if PETA had their way, our hobby would be eliminated too, or highly regulated by the gov't (which would have the same effect). In fact, commercial aquaculture is next on PETA's radar screen for being forced to adapt "humane slaughter" protocols that have been adopted by the beef, pork, and chicken growers. Not that this is bad, none of us want to see animals suffering needlessly, but it could definitely result in a lot of regulations for this hobby as a spin-off from aquaculture regulations.
Don't mean to offend anyone, just my two cents' worth...

First, I have to applaud Alex for doing something that "disturbed" him rather than just going on with his life like most people would have.

With that said, my initial reaction was how hypocritical this stance was. Our hobby supports an industry that inflicts far more damage to the marine environment worldwide than Raley's/BelAir was by letting some lobsters sit in packaging rather than a tank. We all know this.

Then I thought about it a little bit...this really isn't any different than how we selectively bypass certain fish stores due to their livestock health and handling practices. Alex wasn't being hypocritical in his stance, he was just making a difference where he could affect change. If more hobbyists' acted in this manner our hobby would have a cleaner industry.

Like others, my only problem was involving PETA. But most important, at least you took a moment out of your busy life to act. I again applaud you for doing "something".

Thanks Marc.
I feel good about what was done, it tore me up inside and felt the need to act so I did. I know that not everyone will agree but thats why our world works, we have different views, and have the ability to make change if passionate enough.
