Kar's 55g Red Sea Reef Thread

oh yeah forgot that, yeh create that ultimate natural good looking reef shape and then have corals on the edge the advantage of the tock slanting down is that then the corals arent fighting for loght because uve got a larger surface area to work with

Im going with SPS dominated eventually so i dont think chemical warfare is a problem if thats what your talking about. I am hoping that the corals will be bursting out of the acrylic like ive seen on some of the Italian tanks which use Papone. I imagine for that im going to have to upgrade the lighting eventually to maybe 2x150w halides and 2 Actinics. Weathersons tank has somewhat inspired this one even though its not as big but you get the idea, Right? I keep thinking i am working with a 6000gallon or something here  but then i look at the tank and im all dissapointed that its a 55 and not a 5500.

a medical degree wont leave you with much time for fish, but then again you could pay someone to take care of it for you ;)

if you do have alot of holes and crevises in your rock work, you could always put non-photosynthetic corals in the holes....?

After giving it some thought, im going to try the air injection with an old maxi-jet i have, it seems to work good for Weatherson so its worth a shot, right? I know Weatherson and others feed it through closed loops and AC's and all this put im hoping a maxi-jet will suffice. 1 minute every 3 hours if im correct, i can just put the MJ on a timer. Ive been researching and i think SPS will be fine anywhere in the tank but wont grow rapidly, and after reading about the air injection system as i wont have strong lighting the injection should aid in growth. I will start with 1 or 2 plating montiporas and some softies and buy a calcium reactor and eventually get rid of the softies and buy some SPS. But i may be doing this completely wrong and setting myself up for a fall.
So what do y'all think?

couldnt hurt. i like the idea of the air injection! just make sure you replicate it like weatherson has done. the venturi is before the pump, and i think thats the crucial aspect of the system. the pump will chop the bubbles nicley, just like a skimmer.

Well instead of doing a big million dollar project, I thought i could just hook the MJ on a timer in the tank? But then im worried about micro bubbles.

i just read on weathersons thread about a guy who simply used an airline w/airpump. he put the airline at the intake of a powerhead, and had the airpump on a timer or something? the bubbles from the airlin would get sucked into the powerhead and get chopped up.

i wouldnt worry about micro bubbles. as long as there isnt a constant source of micro bubbles, they wont stick around for too long.

Thanks, Thats what kinda gave me the idea of using a MJ because i was playing with my skimmer once and it got disconnected and it gave the same effect as the air injection. The fish just hid in the rocks so i thought nothing of it and now reading this thread and seeing the growth rate of the corals has really made me think about doing this. Like i said, Its worth a shot.

I am going to get everything new now, I was planning on using my old modded Sea Clone which has served me good but i think its time to get a TMC, I was also going to use my koralia 2 but now im getting another Seio 620, And thats all i was going to use but with these being in a tank with copper i dont wanna risk it.

Does anybody know where MACNA will be held next year? I will most likely be going and hope to bring back a vortech for this tank or something worth while.

Argh!

Argh!

:( I've been looking over my folder and i still have so much to do and buy. I am looking for a new skimmer and have narrowed it down to 3 which are
The TMC V2:
v2-skimmers.jpg

OR
The Reef Octopus DNW-110-6520 recirc rated up to 350ltrs:

OR
NW-110-6250 Sump Protein Skimmer:

i was looking at the RS80-P but im not sure if the price is dollars or GBP. If its dollars thats fine but if its GBP its a little out of my skimmer budget. Also im not sure if have the space in my sump for a Euro Reef.
Here is the link:

I need some acrylic help here with drilling the tank (Melev, if you're hanging around :)) I have been told a diamond drill bit will crack the acrylic when drilling and should use a cone piece and i can only find a cone piece for the 16mm return and cant find anything to drill the 40mm drain with. So could i use the diamond bit for the 40mm drain? If no what am i supposed to use? Ive google and it comes up with a load of.....well, junk.

no, dont use a diamond core bit! use a regular hole saw. you know what that is right? googling will give you a bunch of technical data that is useless if you dont know what it means! just use a plain old hole saw that is the right diameter for the hole you need. but when your driling the acrylic, dont force the drill, because it will crack the acrylic if your pushing too hard. just let the drill do all the work. its easy! no different than drilling a hole in wood.

and you were wondering about smearing rt6's name on evans ultimate 29g build thread. its in reefcast #27. go have a listen. poor kid. in the same episode it talks about getting the right skimmer for your system. marc was saying that the company that makes octopus skimmers, used to make a brand of skimmers that he hates! i forget the brand tho?

Kar not that i have a euro-reef but i have heard that they are great skimmers and are doing a great job in taking out a lot of bad stuff. Thats what i heard abot them but i do not have any experience with them.
