Keeping Angles in a SPS reef

I am starting to build my SPS reef. Been at it for a little over a year now. I am a big fan of angle fish. I currently have a trio of jocs, and an emperor. I just saw a video of Copps reef on you tube. He has an incredible reef loaded with angle fish. I believe I saw a couple regal angles, a scribble, queen, and some joculators and a few others I could not identify. His reef looks amazing. Have others had similar success keeping many angles in a sps reef?

Angels, not angles :), are generally pretty well behaved in a SPS reef, though most require a good deal of space. I kept 6 medium to large angels in a 340 years ago and worked fine. Not a zoo to be found, but the SPS was fine.

Yes I blame it on being caught up in the spell check generation. Used to be able to spell, remember phone numbers and even do math.

Was just busting your chops. I am right there with you - a victim of both spell check and iPad auto correct :angryfire:

I'm also a huge fan of John's tanks and love all the fish he is able to keep. It takes alot of dedication and complete love for the hobby to be able to do what he has accomplished. I don't have anywhere near the angels he has, but mine are doing very well in my 335g reef and so are the coral, minus the zooanthids.

I have:

(2) Multi Bar
(2) Golden
(2) Flame Back
(3) Bellus
Venustus
Multi Color
Flame
Red Sea Regal
And until 10 days ago a mature Goldflake.

Lots of Sps and a pretty good collection of zoas although on occassion they get preened .

wow Bradley amazing. What is the fish in the last picture?

I currently have an emperor, and a trio of jocs. I would like to add a scribbled, a blue line and a regal. I have a 300 gallon reef and it is all SPS. My SPS are small i have a couple colonies everything else is in frag stage. Nothing like what you have. But I am working on getting there. What are your thoughts about the fish i am interested in?

Do you have a way to keep them seperated in the reef? I believe you will have trouble introducing them with your emperor already established. The jocs are no problem.
If you do decide to go with these fish, I would add the regal first as it will be the shyest of the bunch, then blueline and then scribbled. IMO.
The regal will be your biggest challenge.
But take this with a grain of salt. All of my angels pick and nip at everything every once in awhile. But my colonies are large enough to handle it. Small frags might not be able to.

Check out my sps 1250 tank on large aquarium thread. Loaded with angels. Feeding time one. Page 6 i think

I was watching some of your videos. The upload dates are all in 2013, how old are some of the videos? Because in some you don't have any fish, and it looks like some aquascaping was changed.

Hey Mike, just be careful... by far the least reefsafe angle is the obtuse!:spin3:

Bad jokes aside, the best advice I could give to those keeping angels in their sps reef is to keep their corals healthy... angels are much more apt to pick on stressed, dying, or otherwise unhealthy corals. Also, while I've kept all seven angelfish genera in my reef, it is not a 50/50 shot with all angelfish species, or the gamble that many of us often read about. The truth is that tendencies follow the genus and species much more than they follow the individual in my experience.

And Brad... your tank looks great! And if someone here believes zoanthids are better than angels get out of the reef fishes forum!:uzi:

O2manny. You asking me about my changes? I definitely added anglesvfrom when we started. And i lost fair amount of coral from hurricane sandy and had to replace I have had my share of losses in angels also. Lost a black banded angel and a clarion both from bacterial infections and or flukes. Cant get to them with trap cause they slow feeding. Q

I guess I should wait until my SPS frags mature and turn into colonies before I even consider adding more angels.

Hedgedrew, I am in awe of your tank. Looks incredible. How did you get away with a Gem and a black tang. I tried that. Had a 6 inch black tang in my tank I had to get rid of. He was way to aggressive towards the Gem. Granted your tank is 4 times larger than mine.

Very impressive assortment of fish and coral. Did you grow most of the SPS colonies?

My most recent angels are the multi-bar and they have been in the tank since Dec. They do mild picking but haven't hurt anything.

Recently I added about 20 small 1" frags to the tank and within a couple of days they decimated over 15 of them. I also added a couple of small maricultured colonies and they didn't touch them...

The frag add was about 2.5 weeks ago and after they ate the frags they went back to their normal demeanor and there has been no more damage.

So even well behaved can have their issues.
