Has anyone picked up water here before. I know they offer free NSW to local reefers. I spoke with Pat at the lab and he said we are all welcome to come down and pick up NSW. Pat said there has been times in the past where people have come down and picked up large amounts of water. It was obvious they were going to resale the water. Overall this is not the norm with people picking up water, but if abused they will shut off the valve. Pat also mentioned the water is "sand filtered". What is sand filtered..?

Scripps is only sand filtered, and I believe Santa Barbara is also. People have been using it for years without problems. Just don't collect water after a storm, or problems in the area (red tides).

i use it and have found nothing but excellent results with it.

in fact, my corals are coloring up much more nicely, perhaps also due to being on full zeovit, but i do a 70g weekly change and notice no ill effects.

when i was using catalina, i got this weird gooey slimey algae that would spring up every so often. no such thing with kerckhof.

plus, it's free...

70g water changes adds up fairly quickly in cost and time mixing up the water. i live pretty close to it...if you hafta drive a little, it would still be worth it imo and ime.

as steven pro from the last club meeting said...nothing was better than nsw...just be careful where you get it.

it is 'research' grade'...they use it for urchin research etc. i have met the main guy and he is very nice and a total scientist kind of dude!

I used it exclusively in my 580 FOWLR and 225 reef with no problems; still using it on my 240g mixed reef with the same results. I live about an hour away but to me it's worth it.

good lord man how many tanks do you have?

I have used it with out any problems. But twice I have gone down and their was no water for what ever reason.

i just talked to the guy there this morning...

they have been having problems with people taking huge amounts of water...300 to 500 gallons, i think he was saying.

this causes the holding tank to be empty and it burns out the pump.

so, he said that they can only do it now during regular working hours.

bergzy, how is the flow rate of the pump when you are collecting water ? Lets say I have (5) five gallon jugs to fill. How long would it take to fill them?

I have actually been there when an OC maintenance guy was loading his pick up with 100's of gallons. It is a Ford pick up and he is always at the LFS.

I use to go down there on Sunday mornings maybe they should have a limit so one or two do not ruin it for all.

It takes about 2 minutes to fill 5 gallons.

I guess that explains why the pump gets fried..It people like him that screw it up for everyone else. 5 gallons two mins not bad..

I just got off the phone with Pat and he informed me that effective Jan. 1, 2007, the water will no longer be available 24/7. He stated that the water would only be available Mon-Fri (no weekends) while the maintenance man was on-site.

The new rules are needed, he said, to prevent people from abusing the privilege that unfortunately for the rest of us others have started to take for granted. He went on to explain that he had to call the cops out on somebody last Saturday night because they apparently over-extended their visit and started pilfering items besides water.

Those items, believe it or not, were pieces of wood. Now I ask you, who in their freakin' right mind helps themselves to something as readily available as wood when all they're supposed to be helping themselves to is FREE saltwater? And it wasn't just wood taken; apparently there were some other items stolen from the carport area as well. The neighbors haven't complained yet but I'd be anything that the first time they do it will become an issue that the Lab will not take lightly. Talk about the 1 rotten apple spoiling it for the rest of the barrel.

As for taking an excessive amount of water he stated that wasn't even an issue. SurfOnH2O mentioned that when he started this thread but Pat said it's no biggie. Now if someone is taking hundreds of gallons for the sole purpose of profiteering then yes, that would be an issue. But as long as it's just the hobbyists and schools taking the water then no worries.

So there it is. My advice, based upon my conversation with Pat, would be for all us to avoid night and weekend trips and try to fit our trips into the weekdays. I do realize that for some of us that may be next to impossible but after Jan. 1, I don't think we're going to have much of a choice. Pat also said that no one at the lab is mad or upset just that some changes were going into effect to ensure that the service remains available to everyone.
