Kerchoff Marine Laboratory

Well I picked of my water yesterday and did a 20 gallon water change..Wow ! what a nice area. I stayed down there for an extra 30 mins to allow my three your old daughter to play in the sand. So far everything looks good this am. My clam seems to enjoy whatever is floating in the tank. Overall, it looks like I wont be purchasing anymore water..Thats an extra 45.00 a month I can put towards something else now...

yep!

i went on a saturday and the place was closed with no water flowing.

you gotta go on regular week days now during regular working hours.

there was a fiasco and they are not allowing somewhat unsupervised water loading now.

it would suck for those who work regular days and have regular work hours!

why does it take one or two knuckleheads to ruin it for so many!?!?!

"Ruining it for everybody"

Just providing an update - awesome place!

We went there today. Since I'm cooking rock, I wanted to pick up a bunch of CDM saltwater to try it out on some base rock mixed with some live rock.

The maintenance guy is a lad named Gary - couldn't meet a nicer guy. Gary is into fishing and a huge family - nice guy! Very helpful and pleasant. He mentioned to my SO while I was on the phone with work that they have a 1000 gallon holding tank.

Apparently they had been having problems with not only people burning out the pump but also stealing things from the institute...very sad.

As for people "profiteering" from the Kerckhoff water, one would have hoped that the lesson was learned and businesses would not force us to lose the privilege. Not so.

Gary had mentioned that obviously it puts them in a difficult spot to say no to a business or ruin it for everyone. While it's rude for a business to put Kerckoff people in the position of disinviting them, they ask for them to at least go to the back of the line when a hobbyist shows up and let them take priority.

While we were there today, a Blue Chevy Tahoe (License Plate 3XXV002) was there, leisurely filling 2 275 Gallon tanks on a custom made rig for the apparent regular occasion. (do the math - we were originally told the holding tank was 500 gallons, and the pump would burn...). The lad was also kind enough not to sign the sheet either as requested. No sign in, no offering to let us go through...

The Gentleman who was filling was "Len Liebrand". We're new to the neighborhood, so we don't know all of the local LFS's yet. My girl and I mentioned we were building a large tank at home, and were going to cycle some rock and it would take us a while. He proceeded to say to her while I was on the phone that he "cycles tanks in a day, and does it all the time, and chided her for "not cycling a tank immediately".

Apparently one of the LFS's that refills water locally there is "Window to the Sea".

We've been to a ton of stores in the local area, and love to support the local businessperson. That said, when profiteering has been expressly discouraged as the water is provided for the hobbyist, and even the slightest of rules can't be followed, we will not be sponsoring this LFS - be it in Tustin or Lake Forest, and hope those of you who depend on CDM water and now have to put up with far reduced hours do the same.

yeah the water is great. i get my water there too. I went there 3 weeks ago to get all the water for my new 225g and sump. made two trips 120 miles total. it was $15-20 in gas but for 200g you cant beat that at 10 cents a gallon :D

I do have a question about NSW. once you get them home, how long can you keep them before they go bad? For example if I get 50g on Jan 1,2009 I only used 25g how long can I keep it and used again?15days 30days?

do you have a power head and heater to keep water moving?

Nope... I store it in the 5gal jugs that I fill up and transport them in and keep it airtight until use.

BTW.... NSW from the California coast needs some Ca & Mg supplementation to reef levels. It also has a very slight "yellow tint" compared to synthetic salts however in general the corals really like it.

also remember the salinity is also low, I usually add salt mix to get it up to .025

i did not put them in a air tight container, is that mean they are no good?

Should be fine, no worries.

Sorry for digging up an old thread. Has anyone gone to Kerchoff for water recently? Are they still offering it? At the same weekday morning hours?
