Kessil Club

Gotta a question I just recently purchased 3 360 I love the controllablility of them!

I Have a 265 that is kind of getting a redo from some down time. I will probably be buying more not sure if 3 will be enough for a sps tank.

My question is is there any difference with growth or light penetration from 10k to 20k in color. I know everyone used to say 10k would be better for growth and 20 k would make the colors pop. Not sure if this is the same with LEDS?

Everyone tanks look great! Were did you get those mounts and and how high do you have the lights over the tank? Looks like you mostly have softies?

My tank is primarily soft corals with some LPS. My spectrum is in the 15-17k range the way I have the color set. My corals photosynthesis occurs 420nm+ which is more to the blue spectrum than the lower kelvin range. As such, I think something between 10k and 20k will provide the best balance between growth and appearance. A little bit of white light is a nice thing from an aesthetics standpoint.

As for the light mount, you can get them from Premium Aquatics. Note that these were designed for the 350 & 360 series. They were not designed for the 160 but apparently can be modified for them with the addition of a 1/4-20 screw that is 2" in length. That screw will included in future kits and can be obtained by contacting Premium Aquatics or the mfg. The mounts are great because they give you full 360º articulation so you can aim them to direct the light where you need it most and maximize your coverage.

An alternate source (the mfg) is here although Premium is a great vendor and has them in stock too.

Thanks to Zacktosterone, for pointing out some errors I made. (I must have been dead tired when I was looking at pricing yesterday.)

I've decide to go with 2 A160 units over my new 40ish breeder. Tank dimensions will be 36 by 18 by 18. I'm currently using AI Hydra and not happy with the look and mounting options. The kessils are going to look awesome in my living room.

Now if I can only find them in stock at a trusted store.....

I have a a160 on a spec v. I also bought the controller for it.

Hey thanks for the call out and your welcome

Thanks! The tank has been running for a little over a year and the Kessils have been online for 10 months. I run 4 Kessil a360we over my 120 gal (4x2x2). The photoperiod is 10 hours. Color ramps from 10% to 15% over 2 hours and runs like that most of the day with a 2 hour ramp down. I have a 2 hour "viewing" period where the color ramps up to 30%. Intensity ramps up from 10-75% over 2.5 hours and ramps down at the end over 2.5 hours. I started with the intensity around 40% and slowly increased this over months. My LFS also uses the same (a350) lights.

Great looking Tanks!

I'm new to the forum and have been toying with the idea of upgrading from T5's to the Kessil LED's. I have a 125g mixed reef and can't seem to determine which lights (160we or 360we) and how many. I have two center braces and would like to retain my glass tops as I have some jumpers in the tank. I contacted Kessil and they were very quick in their response stating that I could use (4) of the a160we's. This would be great if I didn't have the center braces and no tops, otherwise two of the lights would be placed directly over the braces . That leads me to think that (3) of the a360we's would be the best option, but also a bit out of my budget. What would your recommendations be for this type of setup?

Thanks!

I agree with 3 a360we for sure. And welcome to reefcentral!!!!

I love Kessils. Started with the 350's a few years back and now have the 360N on the Spectral Controller. Don't think I'll ever try another light again. Only complaint is the shadowing and it's a bit dim compared to halides/t-5. I'm probably going to add a 350N in the near future to help with that.
