Kids banging on glass? Cause problems?

I recently setup a dual overflow aqueon 125 for the church I belong too. The kids love it (Nemo)...

Sadly every single kid goes up to the glass and bangs on the glass (some rather violently)

Getting them to not touch the glass will be impossible unless I guard the tank for 6 hours every Sunday (something I'm not willing to do)

Also signs don't work. Kids can't read and parent's don't care.

So main question is. What type of damage can a 4-8 year old do by banging on the glass over time? Is it something I should be worried about (seam failure/glass cracking)?

Let me know ya'lls thoughts,

Charley

Yes. You're hurting the fish, actually causing pain, and if one of them brings a toy truck and breaks the glass, you get sued. I'd say taking the tank away is the only cure.

When the tank gets banged on, especially with something hard, it creates a shock wave in the water that is sensed by the fishes lateral line. They interpret that as pain. The harder/sharper the blow, the more the shock is transferred to the fish.

If tapping/banging on the glass were detrimental, it would seem to me that public aquariums could not exist.

We have a 1500 gallon topless tidal pool tank at work that stands 3 feet tall from the ground up. I have witnessed everything from glass tapping to reaching in to grab at the fish, and the fish are as healthy as can be.

Do you think that the tank inhabitants might grow used to the abuse over time?

Can you put up a queue line around the tank with something like red velvet rope to keep them back a couple feet?

can you not do a class/lesson on this issue, and possibly educate both kids and parents? i wanna say something about the parents in a church teaching their kids something something about baby youknowho preachingsomethingsomething.... ...... ....!
i mean, the parents don't care?
take the tank out and put it somewhere where someone actually cares about it.
seriously, i'm not gonna say anymore about it...remove the tank. you're wasting your time.

lol, you can grow used to domestic abuse over time.
But it's not recommended.

Distance from the impact helps.
As a scuba diver you can hear all the clicks and pops and boat engines in the distance.
A loud bang right next to your head would not be pleasant and if it's loud enough could easily damage your ears.

This is the reason the Navy is requested not to do active sonar Ops when whales are nearby.

It literally is BAD for the fish. Not just annoying. Plenty of reputable sources will say the same. If you can't control kids in your own house, *** do you have kids for?

Is so bad you had to make a whole thread about it?

Come on man...

So everyone's main concern is for the fish. Not the glass breaking?

I obviously want to solve both issues, but this is the specific one I ask...

"So main question is. What type of damage can a 4-8 year old do by banging on the glass over time? Is it something I should be worried about (seam failure/glass cracking)?"

Our local library has a saltwater curved tank, I'm guessing 200 gallons that has been there since 2008 in the children's section. I've visited it several times and have not seen anyone hitting on it. It even has 2 steps so a child can climb up to get a closer look. It does have a canopy over it. A child could not reach high enough to put anything into the tank.

broke my word,.. sorry...
the problem is not the glass/acrylic, it's the kids and the parents that let them bang on the aquarium. how much wood would a would chuck wood at an all glass aquarium? ...?... seriously... if you have to ask, i have to ask how you got to setting up an aquarium in the first place? sorry bud, but that had to be said. does the kid have a brick in its hand? a stick? a bible?

i realize you're aquarium is in a church, but the irony is astounding.... there's so much to the science that it begs to ask, that your aquarium has become an oxymormon... and unless you're trying to educate the 'flock' on biological and chemical processes, i feel a little nauseous knowing that 'nemo' is taking a beating every freeking son day for the sake of the kiddies enjoyment...

my suggestions are offensive to you... i'll stop now.

How about the next time there is a service at your Church, the Clergyman or whatever he/she happens to be called, says : "Any child that bangs on the aquarium, their parents WILL donate $50 (or insert suitable $ amount) to the Church". I bet that will soon nip the problem.
Would I be worried about your tank leaking, probably not, but have the parents get a grip of their kids, so you don't have to worry about it & the fish can live without the constant shock waves.
You could put a plexiglass screen around the tank to protect it, but that doesn't say too much about the people attending your Church IMO
A couple of Claymores on a trip wire will get them to stop, but probably a bit extreme :)

I can agree with this.

So first off... This thread went in the opposite direction than I was hoping.

Secondly. It may come as a news flash to many of you. But the common person knows nothing about fish. Also I presume many of you have never had children.

If you want this hobby to live on for centuries to come, have a little patience and understanding.

This thread needs no further input.
