Kole Tang...My first DD purchase.

I love DD, but it really isn't that uncommon to see ich on their fish after a week or two in QT. Whatever treatments they perform there, the fish are usually only held at the facility for 2 weeks, which isn't long enough for proper treatment. Plus constant new fish and possibilities of cross contamination. Trust your own quarantine process, and take their own recommendation to quarantine every new fish.

Koles are fine in qt, they graze constantly like every other tang, but that doesn't mean they will starve in a sterile environment. They can be shy at first, and take a little extra time to eat than other fish, but ime that's pretty normal for any bristletooth. Keep offering nori and softer prepared foods. I put a little nori on a clip stuck to the floor of the tank and after they are used to feeding that way, I move it to the wall. The trick is to always have food available and give them space when you feed.

That sucks, sorry for your loss :( You split the first dose in half, or did both doses to reach the final concentration overnight?

An update on mine:
Last night I started the Cupramine treatment. I took the dose they recommend and split in half doing one half last night and the other this morning.

Once I turned the lights on around 10am I noticed that he wasn't coming out of his cave at all.

1PM: floating on his side gasping.

I was in the process of making more water so I didn't have any ready. I took 2.5 gallons from my DT, put it in a 5g bucket with a heater, powerhead and his cave. 30 minutes later he was swimming normally.

2:30 PM: dead. This sucks. I hate having any fish die but especially after he was doing well (minus the ich). I did not mix Prime and Cupramine if anyone was wondering (Prime + Copper = poison).

I was reading about tank transfer this morning after he was acting odd and I was going to switch to it. My next Kole will be using the TT method. My LFS has 3 in stock and 25% off so I'm going to check them out.

RIP Stan. We have a rule in our house - fish don't get named until they reach the DT. Last week my kids named him Stan since he was close to being released. RIP little buddy.

That really sucks man. I am sorry to hear it. Isn't it a little strange for Ich to take him out that quick?

Kole tangs have vision like a hawk. My QT is in the unfinished side of my basement and the door is 25 feet from the tank. If he sees any movement in that doorway he darts into a cave. My display tank is in my office where I work so hopefully once I am able to move him he will come out more.

:)

I set up a video camera and left the room. Technology is your friend!

When my very shy Kole got to the DT he changed completely. Now it's hard to take a pic WITHOUT him in it!

mine has finally emerged from his cave and he's out quite a bit pecking at the rocks and the glass. haven't seen him nibbling on the nori yet but i'm leaving it in there. he also ate some mysis when i got home from work. still shy but we're making progress!

I have had better luck with not quarantining. The fish seem to get so stressed in quarantine that they become susceptible to everything. Lost my BJT in my QT.

Very nice Nina. Mine also has not eaten any nori yet. He did eat some Mysis earlier, but he his still doing the taste and spit some game. Is yours doing that at all?

Mine also seems a bit obsessed with his reflection...lol.

Here is a quick clip of him showing off to himself...

they must be brothers from another mother! yeah, mine spits some out but then he chases it and eats it and oh yeah, he's either insufferably vain or he wants to pick a fight with that "other fish" in the tank. LOL

i figure as long as he's eating, not losing weight, and becoming bolder, his stress level is minimal so he's staying in the qt for at least 4 weeks.

eta: haha, great video! maybe you should put some nori on a clip...he won't be able to do anything but run right into it!

Haha. They were probably tank mates! If we lived closer we could get them together for a play date! It is fun having someone else going through the same thing at the same time.

if i lived closer and we got our fish together for a play date, we would keep that a secret. people already think my elevator doesn't go all the way to the top! <a href="http://s6.photobucket.com/user/Ninapearl/media/smilies/roflmao.gif.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/Ninapearl/smilies/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt=" photo roflmao.gif"/></a>

when i ordered this tang, he was in the regular LA fish section, not DD so i doubt they were tank mates. he was on sale for $29.99. i watched for a day, waiting for the "but wait! there's MORE!!" but then i decided to go ahead and pull the trigger. :D

last night, he started coming out and swimming back and forth at the front of the tank every time i got near. HUGE difference from yesterday morning! he seems to be realizing that human = food.

QT is not stressful - quite the opposite for new acquisitions, in fact.

This 100%! As long as the QT is properly setup for the fish (i.e. live rock for grazers/hunters, sand for sand-sifters or sand-sleepers), this is definitely the way to go. It gives the new fish a chance to get acclimated without being harassed by existing fish. They can eat in peace, you can spend a lot more time observing them, and of course gives you time to observe for parasites or other illness.

he's out all the time now and he's giving the nori holy heck! he takes a big chunk of it then swims into the pvc to eat it. :)
