Koralia failure rate?

I finally learned what wiped out my tank. two of my k4's were leaking electricity into my tank. Much to my surprise a K2 was also leaking in my frag tank which was more or less doing okay other then a few modest problems.

I've also had a K4 stop working which was sent back to hydor and replaced.

I have 2 nanos that have worked well but they are not as old. The first ones I bought were from august 2007 and both are now dead as is one of the replacements. In total I've had 4/7 fail 3 of which was serious with the leaking electricity and one just stop working all together.

Now I know I'm the exception and they are at more then a 50% failure rate, but they are by far the cheapest of the "good" powerheads and this could be part of the reason.

electricity leaking shouldent hurt your tank at all

every wholesaler iv been to you get a shock when you touch the tanks watersurface ( you learn to stick ur hand in fast or touch with your palm first.. the larger surface area makes it so you dotn feel it)

i just ordered 20 koralia fours.. lets see how long they last :)
oh and you better believe hydor will be replacing any broken ones

and i intend to use them on a wave maker

After about 8 now, I have learned my lesson...Never Again!!!

I have had 3 of the eight last more than a year (2 still going). I had two that just stopped working a few weeks after starting them up. One I stopped using the other day because I noticed the seal on the magnet was leaking and is not put on well. I took the powerhead out and sure enough, rusty magnet...great for the tank Im sure. I broke one when I tried to take it off the glass because they form such a suction to the glass even with the magnet unattached that the red part snapped.

Anyways, you get what you pay for and in my experience they have been crap. Great when they work but Im so far below 50% on them I would never try again and I know Im not the only one because I have so many reefing friends who hate them now too.

With all my other equipment I have spend the money and gone higher end, so I don't know why I have bothered to continue to buy these cheap things...

Sorry for the rant :)

Just my opinion though ;)

Oh and yes some of them have had electricity leakage. I don't see how that can be good for the tank. Its certainly not something I want.

But I have had more maxijets leak voltage over the years

Cheap powerheads....

my koralia 4 was leaking current into the tank too, took my about 30 times getting shocked to figure out what it was.....it was only a few months old

LOL...that sounds like me the last time I was trying to figure out what was leaking the current. Because I was sure it wasn't the brand NEW Koralia 4 that I had put in the tank the day before...so it was the last thing I tried.

good to know that these things are crap as I was thinking of ordering a couple of them as I can't afford more streams at the moment. I don't think I have ever had a problem with a maxi-jet. I a surprised to hear that others have.

I got so sick of touch shock that I moved most of my pump movement over to air lifts. The surges I use are strictly tunze or maxijets that dont knock the pee out of me when I touch the water. I'm a nail biter and those little hang nail zones make me EXTREMELY sensitive to annoying shocks....

Yeah, I have 2 #3's and have been getting shocked for some time now. Finally I took both of them out cleaning them and when I touched the water I didn't get shocked. Who would have guessed it was my 5 month old koralias and not my 3 year old mag 7. I certainly know which one is made better!

I have had a total of 4 Koralias for 5 month and all of them still work.

I'm confused.....doesn't my ground prob in my tanks absorb stray electricity & my GFCI's protect me from shocks?

I didn't see anyone mention them in this string so I wondered if I misunderstand the purpose of the above equipment I just added?

Not exactly. It may save your life, but Ohms' Law says you will still be a pathway to some extent. The probe serves as a ground, until YOU touch the water, GFI's are a must though. They WILL save your life. Hope this helps...

i've had 4 #4's and they all stopped working.i have a 3 right now that seems to be fine so far.as far as electricity not hurting the tank. . . . i know first hand it can.one morning i got up and all my fish were stressed out really really bad.to the point i thought they were on the way out.maybe with no hope.my clownfish was floating head straight down.it was all it to do to move off the bottom.i didnt notice it,but my wife stuck her arm in and it shocked her.we unplugged the heater and it stopped.within an hour all fish were back to normal.

I lost a #4 after about 6-7 months. I just wrote it up to not so great a powerhead. So, I forked out another $70... We'll see. Never been shocked by my tank though..

I have not had most of my Koralia's on my GFCI. I just keep my lights, skimmer, return pump, ect. on GFCI and my powerheads separate. I killed a whole tank a few years ago because of GFCI tripping and not having any flow in the tank.

Funny because after writing this last night, I woke up to another of my #4's not working. I unplugged it and moved the propeller around and then plugged it back in and it started again. Great quality...

I have Hydor #4 that has been in for about a year with no problem. I have had to plug it in and out to kick start it. But that was one time after unpluging it for a water change. Every other time it fires right up. I also have a MJ1200 mod for over a year with no problem.
